To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Momus J. SILVERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State 01: Missouri, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Stud-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stud protectors, and my object is to provide a simple device of this character whereby articles of jewelry, especially shirt-bosom studs, may be reliably secured from loss by accident, or otherwise.
The device is so arranged that it can be readily placed in position over the shank of a stud on the rear side of a shirt bosom, or the like, and automatically clasp around said shank and firmly hold the same in position.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a :tront elevation of the pre ferred form of device in the closed position which it occupies when holding a stud shank. Fig. 2 shows the device in open position, so that it may be applied to, or removed from the shank. Fig. 3 shows the component parts of the device in detail. Fig. 4; is a central vertical section on line IV-IV of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a circular clutch-member 1, having a large circular recess 2, a large outwardly-flaring slot 3, and a small slot 4, arranged substantially at right angles to slot 3. Slot 3 terminates at its inner end in a circular portion 5, concentric with the recess 2 and the clutchmember 1.
6 designates a clutch-member of substantially elliptical form, so that when in its upward position (shown in Fig. 1), it will not extend above the top of said member 1, and when in its lowered position (shown in Fig. 2,) will not extend below member 1. Clutch-member 6 is adapted to slide upon the inner face of clutch-member 1, next to recess 2, and has an integral peripheral finger-piece 7, whereby it may be readily depressed to the position shown in Fig, 2. Clutch-member 6 has a large outwardly-flaring slot 8 of about the same size as slot 3, and terminates at its inner end in a downturncd portion 9, extending substantially at right angles to slot 8. The lower portion of the clutch-member (i has a slot 10, diametrically-opposite the fingcrpicce 7.
ll designates a bow-spring arranged in the recess 2, and secured at its upper end to a pin 12, and at its lower end to a pin 13, extending transversely through the clutchmembers to secure the same together. Pin 12 extends through slot t in the clutchmember 1, and pin 13 extends through the slot 10 in the clutch-member 6, to allow vertical movement of the same.
From the above description, taken in connection with the drawing, it can be readily seen that in the practical operation of my device, the same can be readily sli ped off the shank of a stud after slots 3 and 8 have been brought into coincidence, by pressing downward upon the finger-piece 7 until the same is flush with the periphery of the clutch-member 1. After the device has been placed in position the finger-piece is released, when the device is automatically madeto grasp the shank, by the spring 11, which expands and forces the clutch-members 1 and (5 in opposite directions, so that each will close the slot in the other, as shown in Fig. 1, and thus prevent the device from becoming accidentally displaced.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In combination with a circular clutch member having a circular recess in its inner face and also having a radial slot and a short slot at right angles to said radial slot,
an elliptical clutch member superimposed and adapted to slide on said circular clutch member and having a radial slot and also having a short slot at right angles to the radial slot and located diametrically opposite to the short slot of the circular clutch member, a pin carried by the circular clutch member and passed through said short slot of the elliptical clutch member, a second pin carried by the elliptical clutch member and extending through the short slot of the circular clutch member, and an arc-shaped spring in said recess having its ends connected to said pins.
