WILLIAM DICKEY 300?, OF MARION, INDIANA.
RECEPTACLE FOR CHEWING-GUM.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM D. Roor, a citizen of the United States, and resident of 7-2-6, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, county of Grant, and State of Indiana, (post-office address Lock-box 106, Marion, Grant county, Indiana,) have invented new and useful Improvements in Receptacles for Chewing-Gum, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chewing gum receptacles.
The object of the invention is to provide an article of this character that shall be simple in construction, efficient and thoroughly sanitary in use, and capable of being readily attached to the clothing of the user in such manner as to be completely shielded from view, while being easily accessible when it is desired to conceal a wad of chewing gum, or to remove it for further use.
With the above and other objects in View, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts of the chewing gum receptacle, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts; Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the receptacle, the attaching means being omitted. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the complete article.
Referring to the drawing, B designates the box or receptacle, C the cover or lid and P the pin or attaching prong, which is designed to be engaged with the lining of a coat or vest, thus to conceal the receptacle from view.
One feature of the invention that adds to its novelty, simplifies its construction and measurably reduces the coat of its produc- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion, is the elimination of a butt hinge for connecting the box and cover, and in lieu thereof to construct the member P in such manner as to constitute it a combined pin and hinge. This result is secured by forming one end of the pin with an eye or loop E that is designed to engage openings 0 and 5 formed, respectively,in the cover and box at what will in use he the rear side thereof, and adjacent to the edges of the parts. The cover is formed with a flange F, as usual, and in order to permit of the former being opened and swung upon the eye E, without interference from the flange, the latter is gradually narrowed from the front to the rear as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the openings 0 and 3) being of sufficient size to allow free swinging of the cover. The flange, how ever, at its narrowest part is of sufficient width to co-act with the broader part to retain the cover on the box by frictional contact therewith.
The box and cover will preferably be of circular contour although the invention is not to be limited to this particular shape.
I claim:
1. A box and a cover each having an opening and a pin having an eye looped through the openings to constitute a hinge member.
2. A box having an opening adjacent to its rim, a cover having a flange that gradually narrows in width toward one side and provided with an opening at the narrowest portion of the flange, and a pin having an eye looped through the openings.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WVILLIAM DICKEY ROOP.
