SAMUEL M. GARD, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS.
PUMP-OPERATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 30, 1911.
Patented Oct 8, 1912.
Serial No. 646,880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. GARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to devices for operating the rods of pumps, the same being particularly adapted for use upon power driven pumps.
The object of the invention is to produce a device of this character, which is simple in construction durable, and efficient in operation, and one which when operated will convert rotary movement into reciprocating movement for imparting the desired stroke to the pump plunger.
A further object of the invention is to construct a device of this character which will operate without excessive friction and will further eliminate the jar and noise characteristic in such devices.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the device; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 isa vertical sectional View; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view.
.Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a supporting frame, the same being formed from cast metal and provided with upper and lower guide openings 2 and 3, and an intermediate guide opening 4, said guide openings being arranged in vertical alinement. The supporting frame 1 is provided further with legs 5, having formed integral therewith a foot 6, and by which the frame 1 may be supported upon the platforms of a wind mill tower or upon the platform of a surface pump. Secured to the frame 1 by bolts 7 is a bearing 8, the same being provided with a central horizontal bore 9 and through which is passed a rotary shaft 10. The outer end of said shaft may be connected in any suitable way with the source of power. Keyed upon the inner end of the shaft is a toothed wheel 11, said wheel being arranged to occupy a space in the center of the guide opening 4. The upper and lower guide openings 2 and 3 are so formed as to produce upper and lower curved surfaces, 12 and 13 respectively. The intermediate guide opening is formed in a similar manner and is provided at its upper and lower ends with curved surfaces, 14 and 15 respectively.
Adapted to be reciprocated by the toothed wheel 11 is a bar 16 upon the engagement with a row of intermediately arranged pins 17 which are preferably provided with antifriction rollers 18, the pins 17 being riveted at their inner ends to the intermediate portion of the bar 16 and being adapted to travel within the guide opening 4. Near the upper end of the bar 16 is a pin 19, the same being provided with an anti-friction roller 20, said pin being adapted to project into the guide opening 2 formed at the upper end of the frame 1. Asimilar pin 21 is riveted near the lower end of the bar 16 and is adapted for movement within the guide opening 3, said pin being also provided with an antifriction roller 22. The device further consists of a slide 23, said slide being formed near its upper end with a transverse slot 24, and at its lower end with a similar slot 25. Riveted near the upper end of the bar 16 and at a point slightly above the pin 19 is a pin 26, having mounted thereon an antifriction roller 27, said pin being projected into the slot 24 of the slide 23. A similar pin 26 is riveted to the bar 16 and at a point slightly below the pin 21, said pin being adapted for movement in the slot 25 of the slide 23. It will be, of course, understood that the pins 26 are mounted in a direction opposite to the pins 17, 19 and 21.
Formed integral with the frame 1 are a pair of oppositely disposed bosses 28, each pair of bosses being arranged adjacent the upper and lower ends of the guide openings 4. The bosses 28 are each provided with apertures 29 and through which the bolts 7 which support the bearing 8 pass. Secured by the bolts 7 and adapted to rest upon the bosses 28 are a pair of vertically spaced guide strips 30, the inner edges of which form guide surfaces for the slide 23, thus holding said slide against lateral movement. To prevent the outward movement of the slide 23, I provide upper and lower cross bars 31, the bolts 7 passing through said cross bars and being held in place by nuts 32, as best illustrated in Fig. 4.
A pump connecting bar 33 formed from wood is provided and has apertures 34 formed near its upper and lower ends, said apertures being adapted to register with openings 35"lormed in the slide 23, and when is registered relation, bolts 36 are pa sed there-through, said bolts carrying spacing sleeves 37, between said bar and slide. The nuts 36 are provided to secure the bolts in place. Secured to the intermediate portion of the bar 38 is a stub shaft 38,
and to which the upper end of a pump.
' said guide strips, the said slide being proplunger 39 may be secured.
Upon rotary motion being imparted to the shaft 10, the spur wheel mounted thereon will be rotated, causing the bar 16, due to the pins 17 carried thereby, to reciprocate and during which travel, said bar will travel across the longitudinal axis of the shaft 10, the lowermost pin coacting with the curved guide surface 15 in the guide opening 4, when the bar 16 is in its lowermost position, and the uppermost pin 17 upon the upward movement of the bar 16 will travel upon the upper curved guide surface 14, the pins 19 and 21 having a simi-,
'lar movement in the upper and lower guide openings 2 and 3, respectively. Th1s operation causes the slide 23 to reciprocate in Vertical direction only due to the fact that the pins 24 and 27 are permitted to slide transversely in the openings in the slots 24 and 25, thus imparting a reciprocating nove' ment to the pump connecting bar 33 and tol which the pump plunger 39 is connected. I
Preferably the pins 17 are connected to-i gether at their outer ends by a bar 40, as best-i illustrated in Fig. 4. f
Having thus described my invention, what;
.I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- 40 ters-Patent is:
1. In combination with a supporting; frame having an oblong central opening and oblong end openings provided with semi;
circular ends, a bearing secured to one side of the frame and arranged opposite the cen;
tral opening, a shaft mounted in said bearing, a gear on said shaft and in the center,
of the central opening, a reciprocating and laterally movable bar on the side of said frame opposite that to which the bearing is secured, rack pins projectingfrom' one side of said bar into the central opening of the frame and for engagement by the gear, guide pins secured to the said bar and projecting into and operating in the end openings of the frame, connecting pins secured to the said bar near the upper and lower ends thereof and projecting from the opposite side of said bar, parallel guide strips secured to the said frame, and a slide mounted for reciprocating movement between the of the frame and arranged opposite the central opening, a shaft mounted in said bearing, a gear on said shaft and in the center of the central opening, a reciprocating and laterally movable bar on the side of said frame opposite that to which the bearing is i secured, rack pins projecting from one side of said bar into the central opening of the frame and for engagement by the gear, guide pins secured to the said bar and projecting into and operating in the end open:
ings of the frame, connecting pins secured to the said bar near the upper and lower ends thereof and projecting from the opposite sides'of said bar, parallel guide strips secured to the said frame, a. slide 'mounted for reciprocating movement between the said guide strips, the said slide being provided with transverse slots in which the connecting pins operate, a connectin bar arranged on the outerside of the sli e and secured thereto, a stub shaft projecting outwardly from the center of said connecting bar and a plunger element pivotally connected to the said stub shaft.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my" JOHN C. ENGLAND, HUGH S. CAs'rLEs.
