UNITED STATES PATENT- Orricn.
GEORGE W. GOLAY, OF MIDDLE GROVE, MISSOURI.
DEVICE FOR INCREASING THE THROW OF CONNECTING-RODS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,528, dated December 6, 1881.
Application filed September 30, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GOLAY, of Middle Grove, in the county of Monroe and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Increasing the Throw of the Connecting-Rod of Reciprocating Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line 00 00, Fig. 1.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for increasing or lengthening the throw of the connecting-rod of reciprocating engines; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, a represents a plate provided with upturned ends I) and projecting pieces 0, having holes for the passage of bolts, by means of which the plate may be secured to a suitable frame in a vertical position.
d d represent two parallel horizontal bars, secured to the upturned ends of the plate a by screw-bolts and nuts, with a space or opening between-the bars and between the latter and the outer face of the plate a. The upper bar, (I, is provided with upwardly-projecting slotted ends, through which screw-bolts provided with nuts pass, whereby the nppcr bar, d, can be adjusted vertically.
h represents a bar lying against the bar d, and provided with a wrist-pin, t, at its forward end, to which the outer end of the piston-rod k of a reciprocating engine may be secured.
1 represents akeeper passing around the bars h d, and retaining them in contact with each other, and at the same time allowing the bar It to slide back and forth on the bar (1.
To the enlarged rear end of the bar It the arms at m, lying on opposite sides of the bar h, are pivotally secured, and the outer ends of the arms at m are pivoted in the enlarged outer ends, a, of arms 0, the inner ends of the arms 0 being pivoted in one of the projecting pieces a, forming partof the back plate, a.
To the enlarged outer ends, a, of the arms 0 are also pivotally secured the armsp, the inner ends of the latter being pivoted to the enlarged outer end of a bar, q, resting against the bar d and adapted to slide thereon, and held in contact therewith by the keepers r 1", passing around the bars q d.
The arms on m are of the same length and form and lie on opposite sides of the bar h. The arms 0 0 are also of the same length and shape, and lie on opposite sides of the bar h, and also the arms 1010.
To the bar q, near its inner end, is secured a wrist-pin, s, towhich the inner end of the connecting-rod t is secured, the outer end of the connecting-rod being secured to the outer end of a crank, u, on the shaft 12.
The sliding bars h 1, with their pivoted arms and the plate a, are arranged in avertical plane.-
In the ordinary construction in reciprocating engines the inner end of the connectingrod is pivotally secured to the cross-head at the outer end of the piston-rod, whereas in my construction the wrist-pin s of the bar (1 has a much longer stroke or reciprocation than the wrist-pin t of the bar h, whereby the throw of the connecting-rod is much lengthened or increased, enabling the employment of a longer crank-arm and a consequent increase of speed.
The length of throw of the connecting-rod can be varied as desiredby varying the lengths of the pivoted arms.
I claim as my invention In a reciprocating engine, the combination, with the plate to, bars (I d, sliding bar h, and pivoted arms m m 0 0, of the sliding bar q and pivoted arms 19 19, whereby the throw of the connecting-rod is increased or lengthen ed, substantially as described.
GEORGE W. GOLAY.
