JOHN BUET'INER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HEATING APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1, 1912.
Application filed March 18, 1912. Serial No. 684,482.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BUETTNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to improvements in heating appliances and has for its object the provision of an appliance which will induce thorough and proper circulation in a heated room and thus materially increase the efficiency of the source of heat and facilitate the ventilation of the room.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of an appliance embodying my invention, and Fig. 2, a vertical medial section of the same shown in operative position.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing comprises a shield formed of sheet metal and bent to have three sides so as to constitute a substantially rectangular flue when stood upon the floor of a room against a wall thereof. This shield is designed to he stood upon the floor 2 of a room about a register 3 located in a wall of the room above the floor thereof. In its lower portion shield 1 is provided with a plurality of circulation inducing openings 4 and an upwardly and outwardly curved deflector 5 is arranged in said shield to extend upwardly and outwardly from below register 3 to the outer wall of shield 1, as shown. A flue 6 is arranged in shield 1 leading from openings 4 and opening through deflector 5. This flue is formed of channel members 7 and 8 arranged between the front wall of shield 1 and the lower outer side of deflector 5 and riveted thereto, as shown.
In use the shield is placed around a register 3 as indicated. I-Iot air issuing from register 3 will be deflected upwardly and pass out of the upper end of said shield. This will induce an upward current of air .through openings 4 and flue 6. The withdrawal of air caused by the upper current through openings 4 and flue 6 induces a circulation of air along the floor of the room toward the register- 3, while the current of air issuing from the open top of shield 1 induces a current of air along the ceiling of the room opposite to the current along the floor, thus producing a thorough circulation of the hot air in the room and consequently an efficient and uniform application of the hot air and also excellent ventilation.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device of the kind described comprising a shield having three closed sides and an open side; an arcuate reflector disposed substantially diagonally in said shield from said open side to the opposite closed side thereof; air passages through the side of said shield and opening through said arcuate reflector substantially radial therewith, sub stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN BUETTNER.
