To all whom it may concern: M
Be it known that I, LEO F. Aer, of Al- 7 bany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeglasses; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
The present invent-ion relates to eyeglasses of the type embodying nose guards mounted to swing substantially in a horizontal plane and each having a forwardly extending operating portion and a rearher that the latter may be removed without sists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter morefully described, the novel featuresbeing pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification. In the drawingsz'Figure 1 is an enlarged top view of the mounting and portions of thelenses. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section. Fig. 4 is a-perspective view ofone of the guards. Fig. 5 is a detail view to illustrate the manner of removing the spring, and Fig. 6 is a detail view to illustrate the cooperation of the projection with the support to prevent a guard riding over the bridging portion.
In the present embodiment ofthe invention, the lenses A are carried by a support which preferably comprises a bridging portion 1 connected to the lens attaching devices 2 by horizontal seats 3. The nose guards in this instance are mounted to swing on the seats 3 substantially in a horizontal plane and for this purpose the seats may have pivots 4 projecting upwardly therefrom ,to cooperate with earings on "the guards, the upper end of the pivots being provided with heads to prevent vertical movement of "the guards. In the present embodiment each spring is in. the form of a coil 7 and. an arm 8. The coil is preferably of volute form with its axis vertically arranged, and its inner end connected to the rear-end of a lever 6 and its outer end connected to arm 8 that projects forwardly; and cooperates with the support to slide thereon and exerta pressure on a guard inorder to retain its hearing 5 in cooperative relation with a pivot 4c. The point 9 on which: the arm slides may be in the form of a bracket or hook depending from the support, and located between the pivots 4t and in advance of the latter. This location of the points 9 permits the arms 8 to be given maximum lengths and causes the latter to slide on the points in directions to increase their elfective lengths, thus tending to ease the actions of the springs toward the last part of the opening movements of the guards and while'they are under greatest tension. i V
The nose-engaging portions of the guards may be in the form of nose-engaging members eachhaving an upper pad l'() and a lower pad '11 with an arm 12- branched there; from and secured to a lever 6 which for this purpose may have a vertically offset portion 13 preferably in the form of an upwardly extending loop to one arm of which, one end of a coil 7 may be connected, the arm 12 of a nose-engaging member being secured between the arms of a loop.

In order to prevent the le'verriding on the bridging portion each lever maybe pro-" vided with a projection 14 on its side adjacent the bridging portion, and this projection will near the last part of the opening movement pass beneath and engage the under side of the upwardly curved bridge.

The guards-are operated by pressing the forwardly extending operating portions together, thus causing their nose-engaging portions to separate, the springs acting to move the latter together when the guards are released/ITO remove-the guards from the mounting 'fOI the purpose of fitting the eyeglasses the v arms 8, are disengaged from hooks9 and spring beneath the bridging portion to permit the guards to be turned without interference with the support. I claim as. my invention: I
1. The combination with "a support for the lenses, of a pair of nose guards mounted to swing thereon substantially in a. horizontal plane and each embodying a forwardly extending operating portion, a rearwardly extending portion carrying a nose engaging portion, and a spring armearried by the rearwardly extending portion and havingsliding engagement with the support at a point between the swinging axes of the two guards and in advance of said axes. v
2. The combination with a support for the lenses, of apair of nose guards mounted to swing-thereon substantially in a horizontal plane and each embodying a forwardly extending operating portion, a rearwardly extending portion carrying a nose-engaging taching devices, and portions connectingthe bridging portion and the lens attaching devices, of nose guards arranged above the support, cooperating and laterally separable bearings on the guards and the. supports opening in a direction to pern'nt-the guards to be removed by movement toward the brid in )ortion ortions on the nose i guards cobperating with the bridging portions to limit their opening movement, and a spring for positioning each guard removable with the latter and having a portion operating beneath the support.
4. .The combination witlra support for the lenses embodying a bridging portion, horizontal seats at the ends of the ridgmg portion, and lens attaching devices beyond the seats, of. pivots projecting upwardly from the seats, nose guards each embodying a lever turning on a horizontal seat above the support and formed with a bearing opening toward a lens attaching device, portions'on the guards codperating with the bridging portion to limit their opening movement, and a spring for positionin' each guard removable with the latter and aving a portion operating beneath the support.
5. tion coiiperating with the bridging portion to limit its opening movement, a-coil spring secured atone end to the lever, and an arm projecting from the other end of the coil and cotiperatingwith the support below the latter.
6. The combination with a support fdr' the lenses, .of nose guards, mounted to swing substantially in .a horizontal lane on the support and each embodying a ever projecting forwardly and rearwardly therefrom, a vertical offset portion on the rearwardly extending portion, a forwardly extending sprin arm carried by the lever in rear of the 0% support, and a nose bearing member secured .to the olfset portion of the lever.
7 The combination with a'support'forthe lenses, of noseguards mounted to swing substantially in a horizontal plane on the support and each embodying a lever projecting forwardly and rearwardly of the lenses and having an upwardly offset loop, a spring connected with one arm of the loop and cooperating with the support, and a nose bearing member having a'portion secured between the arms of the loop.
8. The combination with a support for the lenses, of nose guards mounted to swing subset portion and cooperating with'the stantially in a horizontal plane on the'support and each embodying a lever projecting forwardly and rearwardly of the lenses and having an upwardly offset; loop, a coil spring secured at one end to one arm of the loop, an arm projecting forwardly from the other end of the coil and cooperating with the support, and a nose bearing member having a. portion secured between the arms of theloop.
9. The combination with a support for the lenses embodying a bridging portion, horizontal seats at the ends of the bridging portion, and lens attaching devices beyond the seats, of pivots projecting upwardly from the seats, nose guards each embodying a lever rojecting forwardly and rearwardly from t e support and provided with a horizontally opening bearing, theforwardly extending portion carryin a pro ection to engage the under side of the bridging portion of the support and the rearwardly extending rally arranged and being carried by theportion carrying a portion to engage the nose of a wearer, and springs for moving the guards toward each other. 7
10. The combination with a support for the lenses, of nose guards mounted to swing thereon, each made from 'a single piece of flat stock and havin a portion extending forward fromits swinging axis and a portion extending rearwardly from said axis, a volute coil formed by bends transverse of the flat face of the stock having its axis vertirearwaidly extending portion in a horizontal plane with the support, and an arm connected to the coil by a bend transverse of the fiat faces of the stock and proceeding forwardly into engagement with the support.
11. A nose guard comprising a lever having a bearing intermediate of its ends and an operating portion on one side of the bearing, a spring arm carried by theilever on the opposite side of the bearing and proceeding toward the latter, a seat carried by the lever on that side of the bearing onwhich the spring arm is carried, and a nose bearing member secured to the seat.
12. in a nose guard, the combination of a portion formed from a single piece of flat stock and embodying a lever having an in.- termediate bearing, an arm proceeding toward the bearing, and a seat formed by transverse bends in the stock between the lever and the arm, with a nose bearing member secured to the seat.
13. In a nose guard, the combination of a portion made from flat stock and embodying a lever having a bearing intermediate of its ends, a seat at one end of the lever formed by bends in the stock, a coil spring formed by bends in the stock beyond the seat, and a spring armextending toward the bearing of t the lever from the coil spring, with a nose bearing member secured to the seat.

In an eyeglass mounting, the combination with a support, of a finger piece guard lever mounted to turn thereon and to extend forwardly'and rearwardly of the mounting, a coil spring carried by the guard in rear of the turning-axis of the latter and an arm proceeding forwardly from the spring coil and engaging the support at a point forwardly of the turning axis of the guard.
