Be it known that I, EDWARD Z. LEWIS, a. citizen of he ,United' -States, and'a resident of Chicago, int-he county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Salesmen s Checks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters ofreference marked thereon, which form a part of. this specification.

This invention relates to a manifolding salesmans check and the object of the in-. ve'ntion'is to provide a check constructed in such a way that it is not only adapted for the production of the usual original and carbon copies of the same, but is also adapted to produce in inscribing the original bill an indestructible record of the bill which cannot be tampered with without detection and upon which will be reproduced whatever is written upon the original bill including. any changes or alterations made thereon. v I

The invention relates to the-same kind of salesnians check as that shown and described in Letters Patent No. 972,551, issued to me on October 11th, 1910, and, as shown and described herein, is applied to a check for meal service and more particularly .to thechecks used on dining cars. In said check form there is provided an original check uponwhich the order is written, two or more cooks checksunderlying said original check, upon which carbon impressions are made of what is written on the bill, and a hacker or card to which all of 'the parts are attached. Means are provided between the original check and the cooks checks to produce carbon impressions onthe latter, and after the order is written on the original the carbon copy of the same is torn out and sentto the cook. In case additional orders I are written there remains another cooks check or slip which will receive a carbon reproduction of what is added to the bill. After .this is j detached the,'total is written on the original which is reproduced on the card. V

The invention relates specifically to the construction of the original check. In the drawings :"Figure 1 shows my 'improved check with'parts torn away or turned up to disclose the underlying sheets.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view illu strating the manner in which the carbon B, C, the duplicate checks which are herein I referred to as cooks checks; and D, the cardboard hacker to which said several checks are attached. As illustrated in the drawings, each of the checks is printed as usual with any desired items and with such other printed matter as is called for by the particular use towhich thecheck is to be put.

The original check A is a composite check and comprises a sheet A containing an original and a record check and an interfolde'd carbon sheet A Thestrip or sheet of paper A (see Fig. 5), in one direction, is equal to the height of the check and in a direction at right angles thereto is equal to twice the Width of the check. As shown herein, the sections a and a of the folded sheet A are provided below the forms A, .A with parts a a which extend below the carbon sheet sections a a and upon which. are printed punch checks a a. printed with items of dollars and cents. The part a containing the punch check a is made detachable from the composite check A by means of a line of per forations a, and after the composite check has been. punched to indicate the total amount of the bill, this part a is detached and handed to the purchaser as a receipt.

An unalterable record of whatever is written on the original section is produced on the record check section. It is impossible to get at this record check section toalter or change any item without tearing the check along the stitching lines. I i

In the check above described the only way that the check might be tampered with would be by inserting a card between the original check section and the record check section. which would prevent the items written on the original. check section from being duplicated on the record check. section. This would be oi little moment, h -rcrer, for the reason that it would also prevent the order from being duplicated on the cooks check. By arranging the fold lines of the sheet E and of the carbon sheet E in the manner described, the vertical line of stitching is located on the left so as not to come within the column in which the items oi cost of the articles ordered are written.

I claim as my invention 1. A manifolding salesmans check C0111- prising, in combination with a suitable backer and one or more detachable duplicate check forms, a composite check consisting of a single piece of paper folded to form an outer original check section and record check section lying beneath said original check section, and a carbon sheet interfoldcd with said check forming sheet, having one section located between said original and record check sections, and a second section located beneath said record chechsection, the parts of said composite check including said original and record check sections and said inter-folded carbon sheet being permanently stitched together at the top and bottom thereof, and means for securing said checks to'said backer.

2. A manifolding salesmans check comprising, in combination with a suitable backer and one or more detachable duplicate check forms, a composite check consisting of a single piece of paper folded to form an outer original check section and a record check sect-ion lying beneath said original check section, and a carbon sheet interfolded with said check forming sheet, having one section located between said original and record check sections, and a second section located beneath said record check section, the parts of said composite check being permanently stitched together at the top and bottom thereof, and along the side margin formed by the free edges of said sheet.

A composite record check comprising a sheet of paper folded in two sections, an original check section and a record check section, and a carbon sheet folded in two sections, said sheet ct paper and carbon sheet being inte? olded with a carbon sec tion between saio original and record sections and a carbon section under said record check section, the parts of said composite check being permanently at the top and bottom thereof.
