Description
ltnttd gitanas stent l dimite,
WILLIAM BRAIDWOOD ANDHORATIO J ON'ES HEWITT, OF NEW YORK, N: Y.
Letters Faten.tNo.g103,972, dated June 7, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-WHEELS.'
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM BRAIDWooD and HonATIo JONES HEWITT, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved VVater-wheel and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enablethose skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Fignre l represents a vertical section of thi's invention.
Figure 2 is a plan or top View of the same. lSimilar letters indicate corresponding parts.
rlhis invention relates to a water-wheel, the pen-stock Y of which covers one-half or less o f the periphery and sides of the wheel, fitting closely to the same, in such a manner that the Water, after having acted on those buckets of the wheel which are in the interior of the pen-stock, is free to discharge, and all backlash and undne friction of the water in discharging is avoided.
In the interior of the pen-stock are arranged a series of bridges, the lower edges of which extenddown close to the periphery of the wheel, while their upper edges come close to the gate in such a manner that the stream passing through the pen-stock can be concentrated and made to act on a greater or smaller portion of the wheel.
In lthe drawinglhe letterA represents apen-stock, .which is provided with segmental flanges, a '1), dtting'the peripher)r of the wheel,'and, with two cheek-pieces c, fitting the sides of the wheel, and forming, in connection with the flanges a b, a case, inclosing one-half of the wheel, orv less, and leaving the back of said wheel entirely open, as shown in 'the drawing.
'.lhe cheek-pieces c form the bearings for the shaft The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
can be concentrated and brought to act in' a compact l mass upon the wheel.
To prevent the stream, when thus concentrated, from spreading over the entire width ofthe wheel, said wheel is provided with one or more permanent annular partitions, g, dividing olf the spaces between' the buckets in compartments corresponding' to the compartments between the bridges in the pen-stock. By these means a wheel is obtained on which the water acts with its full force, and whichY allows the water to discharge quite freely, and with the least possible obstruction or loss of power.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. 'Ihe pen-stock A, provided with segmental flanges a b, and cheek-pieces c, forming a case `which incloses one-halt' of the wheel, or less, leaving the other half entirely open, as set forth.
2. The hridgese in the pen-stock, in combination with the gate fand wheel B, as described.V
WILLIAM BRAIDWOOD, HORATIO J ONES HEWITI.
