To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE \VILLL-nt Hti'rcmssox. a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand, and residing at Walton, \Vaikato, in the Provincial District of Auckland, Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Sparking-Regulators for Internal- Combustion Engines. of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to sparking apparatus by which the charge is fired in internal combustion engines.
My object is to automatically regulate the timing of the sparking, so that it occurs at the most advantageous moment, at all speeds of the motor, the sparking being advanced as the speed of the motor increases and retarded as the speed decreases.

A governor constructed according to my invention has a frame 1 and a base plate 2 whereby it is affixed to any convenient part of the engine. A cylinder or tube 3 is secured in the frame 1 and prevented from revolving by a set screw 4. A boss or sleeve 5 mounted revolubly on the tube 3 is re tained in position between the frame 1 and the sleeve 6 fixed on the end of the cylin der 3. Governor balls 7 are mounted upon steel straps 8 attached at one end to the boss or sleeve 5 and at the other end are attached to a boss 10 by screws 11. The boss 10 is mounted revolubly upon the sleeve 6 and has an internal circumferential groove 12 which engages a pin 13 projecting from a plunger 14 which is slidable in the interior of the sleeve 6, a slot 15 being provided in the sleeve 6 to allow movement of the pin 13. The sleeve 6 is secured to the frame 1 by means-of a set screw 16. A rod 17 provided witha collar 18 fits within the cylinder 3 and is regulatable by a thumb screw 19 screwed into the end of the cylinder and kept in position by a lock nut 21. A spiral spring 22 located Within the sleeve 6 bears ai one end against the collar 18 and at the other end against the plunger 14. The end of the rod 23 is provided with coupling 21 (see Fig. 2) having a hole which engages a pin 25 fixed to a rack 2t} which gears with a tooth wheel 27 fixed to the commutator 28 which is of ordinary description.
Fig. 1 shows an alternative connection of the rod 23 to the commutator. pin 29 integral with a bar 30 and a coupling 31 is adapted to engage the slot or hole usually provided in the lug of the commutator. In operation the governor and sparking mechanism are so set. that a spark occurs at the late fire position when the engine has been stopped.
After the engine has been started and the speed of the governor increases the balls fly out under centrifugal force and in so doing they cause the boss 10 to travel in the direction of the boss 5 and the groove 12 engaging the pin 13 causes the rack 26 to move and rotate the toothed wheel 27 and the commutator "28 thereby advancing the timing of the spark by altering the sparking mechanism and so cause the spark to occur at the most advantageous time during all speeds of the engine. As the speed of the engine decreases the straps 8 and the spiral spring 22 overcome this centrifugal Force and the balls gradually close toward the sleeve thus gradually leading the sparking gear to the late fire position.
An engine fitted with the sparking regulator is much safer tostart because the sparking cannot occur too early as with other mechanism and thus cause the explosion in the engine to occur too soon and so kick back. The prcssilre of the spring 29 upon the 1*luager 11 is regulated by opcrat ing the screw 19.
