GATE-VALVE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY EpVVEITZEL, citizen of the United States, residing at Empalme, Sonora, Mexico, have invented cer: tain new and useful Improvements in Gate- Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves and consists in certain novel features which will be hereinafter first fully described and then more particularly pointed out in the claim.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result. reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a gate valve constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same with the check casing removed; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4.- is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 showing the gate valve in open position; Fig. is a top plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of the check valve detached.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters. a
The device comprises a main casing 5 having one side thereof provided with a laterally extending exteriorly threaded nipple 6 for connection to a pipe or conductor leading to a boiler and its opposite side provided with a circumferential attaching flange 7. The casing 5 is provided with an interior chamber or seat 8 for the reception of a vertically movable gate valve 9 the latter being provided with an operating stem 10 and a supporting ring or frame 11 which carries the head of the valve, as shown. The upper end of the main casing rovided with a cap or closure 12 having its central portion bowed u wardly at 13 to receive the valve 9 when t e latter is in elevated or open position, said cap being detachably secured to the body of the casing 5 by bolts or similar fastening devices 14 extending through perforated flanges 15 formed on the cap and adjacent body portion of the valve easing 5. Arranged above the cap 12 is a cylinder 16 having a remov able closure 17 provided with an opening to Specificationof Letters Patent.

permit the passage of the valve stem 10, there being a handle or finger .piece 18 carried by the valve stem 10 by means of which the valve may be moved to open position manually, when desired. The intermediate curved portion 13 of the cap 12 is provided with a threaded nipple 19 which receives a correspondingly threaded gland 20, there being a similar threaded nipple 21 formed on the lower end of the cylinder 16 for engagement with a correspondingly threaded gland 22. The glands 20 and 22 form a guide for the valve stem 10 and serve to effectually prevent leakage when operating the gate valve. The cylinder 16 is provided with oppositely disposed depending ears 23. preferably spaced from the adjacent walls of said cylinder to permit the attachment of connecting rods or links 241. the lower ends of said links being bolted or otherwise rigidly secured to spaced lugs 25 projecting vertically from the removable cap 12 of the main casing, as shown.
Threaded on the stem 10 is a piston head or plunger 26 which operates within the cylinder 16, said cylinder being provided with a laterally extending nipple 27 for attachment to a source of fluid supply so that by admitting fluid through the nipple 27 to the interior .of the cylinder, the gate valve 9 be moved to open position automatica y.
A coil spring 28 surrounds the stem 10 with one end thereof bearing against the cap 17 and its other end engaging the plunger 26, the function of which is to automatically return the valve to closed position when the fluid is cut-off from the interior of the cylinder 16.
In order to hold the valve in open position, the stem 10 thereof is formed with one or more transverse openings 29 adapted to receive a locking member or pin 30, said pin being inserted in one of the perforations 29 when the latter is exposed above the cap 17 as best shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
Disposed at substantially right an les to the gate valve 9, is a check valve 31, t e latter being mounted for reciprocation in a casing 32. The casing 32 is provided with a circumferential flange 33 having transverse perforations 34 formed therein and adapted to register with similar erforations in the flange 7 of the main casmg 5 to permit the insertion of bolts or similar fastoning devices 35 so that the casing 32 may be readily detached from the main casing 5, when desired. One end of the check valve casing 32 is provided with a removable plug 36 having a socket formed therein for the reception of the stem of the check valve 31, while the other end of the casing 32 is provided with an exteriorly threaded nip le 37 for engagement with the correspondingly threaded end of a water supply pipe. A bushing 38 is disposed withln the main valve casing 5 between the valve 9 and check valve 31 in order to present a smooth, unobstructed passage for the water, and also to form one wall of the seat for the valve 9.
Thus-it will be seen that by exerting an upward pull. on the finger piece 18 and inserting the pin in one of the openings 29, or by introducing fluid through the nozzle 27 to the interior of the cylinder 16, the gate valve 9 may be moved to open position so as to permit the proper operation of the check valve 31 when feeding Water to the boiler. Should the check valve bind to its seat or for any other reason fail to properly operate, the locking pin 30 is removed or the fluid supply to the cylinder 16 cut 011', which causes the spring 28 to auto-' matically close the valve and thus cut-off communication between the water supply and the boiler. With the gate valve 9 in closed position, the plug 36 may be readily removed or the valve casing 32 detached from the main casing 5 in order to efiect any necessary repairs to the. check valve without the necessity of shutting down the boiler.
An arm or support 39 is preferably ex tended laterally from the cylinder 16 and on which is pivotally mounted at 40 a bell crank lever 41. The short arm of the bell crank lever extends through the handle or finger piece 18, while the long arm thereof is pivotally connected at 42 with an operating rod so that the operator or other at tendant may elevate the gate valve by exerting a longitudinal pull on the operating rod, if desired. The gate valve may also be closed either automatically or manually when the ejector, pump, inspirat-or, or other means for forcing the water into the boiler is shut ofi".
The device is extremely simple in construction and is so arranged that t-he several parts thereof may be readily disconnected in order to effect any repairs thereto, when necessary.
- It will be observed on reference to Figs. 3 and 4 that the sup ort-ing ring 11 has an axial extent or widtii greater than the diameter of the valve stem andthat the valve consists of a single disk having an annular peripheral flange equal to the width of the supporting ring. The valve seat orrhamher 8 intersects the bore 8 of the casing and has a. portion 8 extending laterally from the bore and of such proportions that it forms a close guide for the supporting ring and the disk or head; The valve will thus be effectually guided so that it will not wear unevenly and will always work smoothly and easily. Furthermore, a valve strong enough to resist heavy pressure from the water is provided without great weight, so that the resistance to the opening force will be slight. Moreover, when the valve is closed it will be firmly seated and no openings will be left around the valve to permit leakage, although no packing is used or is necessary. The bushing 38 forms one wall of the valve seat and is of such dimensions that its inner end will aline with the corresponding wall of the upper portion of the chamber, thereby forming part of the valve guide and abutting the head so as to effectually maintain it against the pressure of the water when closed. Should the head be broken or worn, the bushing may be withdrawn, a new head inserted, and the bushing replaced in a few minutes. The
construction is such that the contacting areas are very slight and frictional resistance is reduced to a minimum.
Having thus described theinvention, what is claimed as new is:
A gate valve comprising a casing having a bore and. a chamber intersecting the bore and extending laterally therefrom, the bore being enlarged at one side of the chamber, the bottom and one wall of the chamber constituting a valve seat and guide across said bore, and the several walls of the lateral portion of the chamber constitutin a valve guide, a slidable stem in the charm er extending through one wall of the casing, a supporting ring at the inner end of the stem having a width equal to the width of the lateral portion of the said chamber, a valve head consisting of a disk having an annular peripheral flange fitting removably in the supporting ring and equal in extent to the width of the ring, and a. bushing removably fitted in the enlarged portion of the bore of the casing and having its inner end in alinement with the corresponding wall of the lateral portion of the cham her and abutting the said head when the valve is inits closed position.
