. attorney 5 Patented Dec. 10, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved construction of faucet or similar device of the reciprocable piston type in which the casing is provided with a chamber around the casing in the region where the piston is in fluidpassage closing position whereby the latter member can, if desired, be made as one head and the pressure thereon equalized. A further object of the invention is to provide an im- .proved construction of such piston valve that it can be compressed by turning the stem as the body thereof becomes worn or to stop leaks if they occur. Other objects will appear from the disclosure herein.
The invention is embodied in the preferred examples herein shown and described, the features of novelty being pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a central vertical section with parts in full of a faucet according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a. horizontal section on the line 11-11 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the piston stem employed in Fig 1.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section like Fig. 1 illustrating a modification of the means for carrying the pistonv and whereby the piston can be adjusted for compression or relaxation.
Referring first to the views Figs. 1-3, the character ill designates the casing which has an intake II and a discharge l2. In the cylindrical wall of the case above the discharge is formed an annular projection defining an annular passage l3, said passage having an inlet I to which leads a passage l5 so that water or other fluid flowing into the inlet must pass through the passage M to the exit at the discharge i2.
It will be observed that the lower end of the cylindrical casing is subtended by a'wall l5 and that the passage i5 is formed by an added shell 15 cooperating with said subtending portion and a side of the lower end of the casing.
The character i6 designates the piston which is of cylindrical form to fit in the cylindrical chamber or bore of the casing l0. Said piston is mounted on the lower end of a stem I! (Fig. 3) the latter consisting of two parts of different diameters with a shoulder l8 at the junction. The lower ends of the portions of the stem are each threaded to receive nuts l9 and 20. The packing-23 or body of the piston which, in the present instance, is of elastic material, such as rubber, is mounted on the stem portion between two washers 2| and 22 with the nuts I! and 20 pressing against them. If desired the body of the piston can be made in two parts with a metal washer 24 between them.
The upper end of the casing i0 is provided with a screw cap 25 that can be removed at will. Said cap is centrally perforated for the 5 extension therethrough of the upper end of the stem. H.
The stem i1 is shown as provided with means. for reciprocating the piston consisting of a hand lever 26, hollow at its lower side, pivotally and 10 removably connected at 21 with the stem and fulcrumed at 28 to one end of a link 29 that, in turn, is pivotally connected at 30 between ears fixedly projecting from the casing I0. By sufficiently elevating the handled end of the lever 26 from the position shown in said Fig. 1 the body of the piston can be moved upward to permit flow of fluid from the inlet II to the outlet l2, and in this flow it will be noted, that the fluid passes upward to the opening I4 and thence 20 downward to the outlet I2 which can continue in an ordinary basin spigot, as shown. When the piston is returned to the down position shown in Fig. l, the pressure of the fluid extends entirely around .the body of the piston 25 equalizing the pressure and therefore normally permitting easy movement of the piston.
By unscrewing the cap 25 and elevating the piston so that the nut I9 is exposed a little above the upper end of the casing a wrench can be applied to the nut I9 to expand the washer 22 on the packing and therefore stop a leak; or if the piston be so tight as to render the operation of the piston difficult the wrench can be applied to said nut iii to relax the expanded condition. In either of these adjustments the pivot member 21 and handle 26 prevent the stem 25 from turning when the wrench is applied.
\ The two adjustments described in the foregoing paragraph can also be efiected by turning the stem l1, while in lowered or closing position, in the proper direction the nut 20 being held from turning by a wall or walls 32 flxed at the bottom of the piston chamber, said wall contacting parallelly with a facet of the nut 20.
In Fig. 4 there is shown a piston of improved construction that can be adjusted for the purposes set forth in the two foregoing paragraphs. In this view the casing part is the same as in Fig. 1, and the piston consists of a body member 50 40 of cylindrical form and of such material as before described having an axial perforation, the ends of which are conical sockets. The said body member is supported by a screw bolt ll extended upward through perforated metallic expander 5 members 42 and 43 fitting in the aforesaid conical sockets and metallic washers 44 and 45 on opposite ends of the body member. The upper protruding threaded end of the bolt 4| is engaged by the internally threaded lower end or the stem 46 proper while the upper end of said stem is adapted to receive an operating handle 26 such as shown in Fig. 1.
The lower end of the bolt 4| is shown as provided with a Irusto-pyramidal head that engages a similar socket at the bottom of the piston chamber of easing Ill when thevalve is in closed position to prevent rotation of said bolt. By turning the stem 46 in the proper direction the piston body can be expanded or relaxed by varying the pressure exerted on the upper washer 44 by the lower end of the stem 46, such pressure being communicated to washer by bolt 4i and its head. With this construction a leak can be stopped or difllcult reciprocation of the piston remedied without cutting off the fluid pressure.
The forms of the parts can be changed without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. A faucet of the reciprocating piston-type including a casing having a cylindrical wall with a lateral outlet port at one end thereof, an annular fluid passage in said wall at one side of said outlet port communicating with the interior of the casing, a fluid intake to the casing at the opposite side of said outlet port, a passage communlcatingly connecting said intake with said annular passage, a wallof said connecting passage constituting the end of said cylindrical wall between said intake and the outlet port, and a piston-type valve in said cylindrical wall movable in one direction to close communication between said lateral outlet port and. said annular passage and movable in the opposite direction to 5 open communication between said outlet port and said annular passage and thereby establish fluid communication from the intake to said outlet port.
2. A faucet or the reciprocating piston-type 10 including a casing having a cylindrical wall with a lateral outlet port at one end thereof, an annular fluid passage in said wall at one side of said outlet port communicating with the interior of the casing, an intake to the casing at the oppo- 15 site side of said outlet port, a passage communicatingly connecting said intake with said annular passage, a wall of said connecting passage constituting the end of said cylindrical wall between said intake and the outlet port, and pis- 20 ton-type valve in said-cylindrical wall of resilient material movable in one direction to close communication between said lateral outlet port and said annular passage, and movable in the opposite direction to open communication between 5 said outlet port and said annular passage and thereby establish fluid communication from the intake to said outlet port, said piston-type valve having a two part adjustable stem and compression members thereon, and means whereby said 30 a stem may be engaged at one end 01' one of its parts with the aforesaid wall of said connecting passage and the compression members actuated by turning the other part or said stem.
