Description

EPHRAIM S. MoRToN, or PLYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 103,914, datecl June 7, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN N AIL-HAMMERSS The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent-and making part of the same www To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM S. MoRToN, of Plymouth, iu the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nail-Hammers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification. Y
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in nail-hammers, and consists in a slot formed at the base of the claws, and at about .right angles therewith, by means of which a nail may be held iu M the hammer and startedy inthe wood with one hand,
thus rendering the hammer very convenient in driving nailsin places where but one hand can be used.
In the accompanying drawing`- v Figure l represents a'side View of the hammer, with one claw broken away, to show the slotfor the head of the nail and the position of the nail, the latter being seen in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a view of the inner side of the hammer, showing the outer end of the slot at the base of the claws.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A B represent the claws of the hammer.
C is the slot, which is somewhat tapering in form,
extending inward at the base or butt of the claws, in
a direction about at right angles therewith, and about parallel with the handle D. The slot C extends inward fai' enough to receive the headof the nail, and, being tapering in one or both directions, the head is supported by the slot, and the nail is supported'by the angle or slit between the claws, as seen in iig. 1. By this improvement, a nail may be started in the woodaud driven in situations where both ofthe hands of the operator cannot` be used.
I do not, broadly, claim au improvement ou allant mer for this purpose, as I am aware that itis not new; but I am not aware that the improvement has ever. been made in this cheap and e'ective manner. Theslot C adds but a trifle to the cost of the harnlmer, and allows the nail to be started in any place I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pateut- Y,
A nal-hammer, provided with a slot, O, formed at the base of the claw, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
