HAT-FASTENING DEVIGE.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPI-I Concos, a citizen of the-United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastening devices for ladies hats, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction, effective in operation and which avoids the use of pins passed through the crown of a hat and having projecting point portions.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of any improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and in which Figure l is a sectional side View of a ladys hat and showing my improved pin or fastening device, and indicating the method of its operation; Fig. 2 a central longitudinal section of the operative parts of the fastening device, detached, and; Fig. 3 a cross section on theline 33 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown at a a ladys hat, and in the practice of my invention I provide a fastening device Z) of the class specified which comprises a central tube 0 in which are placed two similar longitudinal movable tubes (Z of the same length, and their combined length being at least equal to the length of the tube a, and the inner ends of which abut in the center of the tube 0.
The inner ends of the inner tubes oZ are provided with radial pins or plugs f which are movable in a corresponding longitudinal roove f in the outer tube 0, said groove forming a corresponding rib i on the outer side of said tube 0, and mounted in the inner tubes (Z is a continuous spiral spring 9 which is shorter than the combined length of said tubes and the ends of which are secured in the outer end portions of said tubes at 9 I also provide two short pins it having heads 71. and the pointed end portions of which are threaded as shown at h and adapted to be secured into the screw-threaded outer end portions of the tubes (Z, and said outer end Specification of Letters Patent.

In practice, the central part of the fastening device is held in the central portion of the crown of the hat and the pins h are passed through the opposite side portions of said crown and screwed into the outer end portions of the tubes (Z and the device is ready for use.
The hat is placed on the head in the usual manner and at this time the pins in are drawn outwardly. This operation also draws outwardly the tubes (Z and when the pins /b are released the spring 9 draws the tubes (Z inwardly, and in this operation the pins h are also drawn inwardly and the heads 72 thereof pass into the hair and securely hold the hat 011 the head, and the object of providing the pins M with small heads instead of points is to prevent said pins from injuring the head if the ends thereof should come in contacttherewith. The pins h may be longer if desired and may be curved in the direction of the body of the device to a greater extent than shown if desired, and the object of the studs or pins f and the groove f is to prevent the tubular members (Z from turning in the tube 0.
My invention is not limited to the shape herein shown and described of the parts 0 and (Z in cross-section and other forms of said parts may be employed, and other changes in and modifications of the construction shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without depart-ing from the spirit of my invention, or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hat fastening device comprisin a main tubular member of less length t an the transverse dimensions of the hat crown, two inner tubular members movable longitudinally in the main tubular member and provided at their outer ends with down.- wardly and inwardly curved pins which are rigidly secured thereto a spiral sprin mounted in said inner tubular members and the ends of which are secured thereto, and pointed pins adapted to be passed through the sides of the crown of the hat and to be secured to the outer ends of said inner tubular members.
2. A hat fastening device comprising' a main outer tubular member the length of which is less than the transverse dimensions of the crown of the hat, two inner tubes movable longitudinally therein and the combined lengths of which are at least equal to the length of the main tubular member, said inner tubes internally screw-threaded at their outer ends and being provided at their outer ends with downwardly, and inwardly curved pins rigidly secured thereto, a spring spiral placed in said inner tubes and the ends of which are secured thereto, and pins adaptedto be passed, through the side portions of the crown of the hat and threaded and adapted to be screwed into the outer ends of said inner tubes, and means for preventing the inner tubes from rotating in the main tubular member.
