To all whom 'it may concern.'
Beit known that I, .ROBERT P. LYLn, citiren of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Mul tnomahand State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Dental Hammers, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in dental hammers and has for its-object to provide an automatic hammer which may be used to hammer the lilling on the inner side of the tooth.
Another object is to provide such a hammer which may be cheaply manufactured and which is simple in construction.
These objects are attained by means of the improvements illustrated in the accompanying drawing's in which,
Figure 1 is a cross section through the center of the tool. Fig. 2 is an end view of the inside of part 2. Fig. 3 is another sectional elevation showing the plunger pulled out in the direction of arrow -A- and also shows f how part 11 is forced in the saine direction by parts 13. Fig'. 4 shows detail view of part 18. Fig. 5 is an end view of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an end view of Fig. 7. Fig. 7 shows detail view of part 13. Fig. 8 shows detail of part 23. Fig. 9 shows a different method of forcing the parts 13 apart.
Like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a hollow handle 1 which is threaded at one end as shown for the reception of cap 2 and has a portion of it bored out slightly more than the rest so as to form a shoulder at 3. An inner tube 26 is arranged to screw into cap 2 and is slotted as shown at 8, a slightly rounded shoulder being formed at 9 for a pur ose hereinafter mentioned. Part 11 is ield against shoulder 3 by spring' 10 and may be forced along the length of the enlarged hollow portion of the handle 1 in the direction of arrow *A-. The plunger consists of a spindle portion 6 enlarged at 18 and provided with a head portion or shoulder 4. The small end of the plunger is arranged to hold various hook-like tamping pieces 7 which in the present instance are shown screwed in. A hole 1.4 is drilled in the plunger for the re ception of pin 23 which is shown in detail in Fig'. S. A spring is placed in the bottom of 18 is pro* vided with a slot 1Q for the reception of dogs 13 which are pivotally held in place by pin 12 and forced apart by pin 23. Dogs 13 are shown. in detail in Figs. G and 7. ln order that the two dogs may partially interlock so that they may both be held on the same pin .12, a portion of the dogs is out away as shown at 22 in Figs. G and 7.
In. Fig. 9 is shown another method of forcing the dogs 13 apart. ln this case a V shaped spring is used instead of spring and pin 23. The plunger is forced toward the closed end of handle 1 by spring 17 and is held at rest there until the handle 1 is pulled .in direction of arrow -B, 7 being held stationary. ils the handle is drawn away from 7, the plunger assumes the position shown in F 3, the dogs 13 being forced against 1.1 at 15. Shoulders 9 at the bottom of slots S force dogs 13 inward when the surface 16 of said dogs comes in contact with said shoulders 9, thus causing shoulders to release hammer ring 11 which is then forced against shoulder 4- of the plunger by spring 10 thereby causing the desired shock in the direction of arrow hB on tamping piece 7. As the handle 1 is brought forward again it allows the plunger to assume its former position, when the operation may be repeated. lf desired, a plu. ger .rod 27 may be screwed in end of enlarged portion 4 of plunger, or otherwise attached to same, and may extend through orifice 25 in handle 1. Tamping pieces may then be attached to the outer end of said plunger rod 27 for the purpose of lilling the outer side of the teeth.
It is understood that slight changes may be made in the specific structure shown without departingfrom the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is 1. An automatic dental hammer comprising a stem adapted to carry a tool at either end, an inner casing, an outer casing, said casings surrounding the stem and adapted for movement independent thereof, and means adapted for travel on the inner casing to impart a blow to the stem by a movement of the outer casing in one direction.
2. An automatic dental hammer including an outer casing', an inner casing, a tool-carrying stem within the inner casing, means for imparting impact to the stem, means for normally locking the impact means against stem influencing operation, and means formed integral with the inner casing for releasing said impact means.
3. An automatic dental hammer including an outer casing, an inner casing, a tool-carrying stem within the inner casing, means Vlor imparting impact to the stem, means l'or normally locking the impact means against stem-inl'luencing operation, means carried by the inner casing vor releasing said impact means, and means disposed within the stem to normally maintain said locking means in locking position.
4. An automatic dental hammer including` a tool-carrying stem, an inner casing disposed about the stem, an outer casing disposed about the inner casing and adapted vl'or movement independent ol' the stem, normally-inoperative means Vl'or imparting a blow to the stem adapted l'or travel on said inner casing, and means disposed about said inner casing Al'or automatically inducing stem-influencing operation ol said normally-moperative means by movement ol' the outer casing in one direction.
5. An automatic dental hammer comprising a stem, a slotted. inner casing surrounding the stein, an outer casing surrounding` the inner casing, said stem and outer casing` being adapted 'lor independent movement, spring-'nliuenced means lor imparting a blow to the stem, stem-carried means adapted l'or travel in said slotted casing and operable .in the movement ol' the outer casing for operatively positioning said blow-imparting means under tension ol' said spring, and means carried by the inner Casing` to release said spring Vl'rom tension. An automatic dental hammer comprising a stem, an outer casing, an inner casing, said outer casing and stem being adapted 'l'or independent relative movement, a springiniluenced annular member adapted in movement to impart a blow to the stem, and means carried by the stem to move said member to blow-imparting positionagainst tension ol' said spring in the movement oi' the outer casing, and means carried by the inner casing to release said member Yl'rom tension of said spring.
7. An automatic hammer comprising a stem, an outer casing, an inner casing, said casings being adapted l'or movement independent oll the stem, a spring-influenced annular member adapted in movement to impart a blow to the stem, and a plurality ol' dogs carried by the stem to move said member to blow-imparting position against tension oll said spring in the movement oll the outer casing in one direction, and means carried by the inner casing to release said member l'rom tension ol' said spring.
S. An automatic dental hammer comprising a stem, an outer casing, an inner casing, a spring-influenced annular member adapted in movement to impart a blow to the stem, a plurality olI dogs carried by the stem to move said member to blow-imparting position against tension ol' said spring in the movement ol the outer casing in one direction, and shoulders carried by the inner casing to release said member l'romtension oll said spring.
