Be it known that I, RowLANi) W. JOLLY, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of the city of New York borough of Manhattan, in the county and tate of New York, haveinventeda new and Improved Cutting Device, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and'exact description. Thls invention relates to a new and 1mproved device of general utility, which may be used as a pocket ink-eraser, paper cutter,

.. pencil-sharpener, or the like.

- An object of this invention .is to utilize a blade similar to the common safety-razor blade, with means for normall protecting v the sharpened edgethereof, a apted to be slipped to one side to exposea portion of the blade, whereby this portion may be used as a sharpener, eraser, or the like.

' A further object of this invention is to provide a device which may be'simply and inexpensively constructed of sheet-metal,

' and which will be strong, durable, and as tractive in its appearance.

These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.-

Reference is, to be had to the accompanying drawingsforming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which-.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the guard in its protecting position. ,Referring moreparticularly to the separate parts of this invention as embodied in the form shown in the drawings l indicates a blade of any-suitable structure, such as that commonly used in safety razors and having a sharp edge 2. For the purpose pf securing this bla e, there is provided a casing 3, formed of a single sheet of metal, such as that indicated in Fig. 6, bent inter-- mediate its edges to form an arch loop 4, which acts as a spring, tending to hold the sides 5 and 6 of the casing together, whereby they will grip the blade whenit is placed between them.

It will be noted that the o posite corners at 7 and 8 of the blank of wii' is made, are cut away in the form of an arc, so as to permit a portion of the blade'to project beyond the casing, whereby it may be readily used. The edges. of the casing are curled up on each side, as at 9 and 10, to form guides, on'which a guard 11 may slide. This guide is in the form of a tube having a slot therein, and is of springy material so that it may be slipped over the guides and adjustably secure itself to the casing. 1ch the casing is of shorter length than the casing, so T that when it is slid back into the positionshown in Fig. 2,-it 'wil not project beyond the edge of the casing, but will expose that portion of the blade uncovered by the easing 3.

. For the purpose of limiting the motion of the guard, it is rovided with ton 12 and 13, on opposite sides thereof, which 'project into slots 14 and 15 provided inthe casing 3, adjacent the lower edge thereof.

In order, that the device may be readily attached to any suitable support, such as a watch chain, the' casing is provided adjacent one end with alined openings 16.

The utility of the device will be readily understood when taken in connection with the above description. Normally, when the device is carried in the pocket, the 11 is in the position occupied in Fig. 1, where it will protect the edge of the blade. When it is desired to use the same, the guard guard is slid up .into the position indicated in Fig.

2, so that the portion of the blade extending 'beyond'the casing 3 will be uncovered, per.- mitting it'to be used as a pencil-sharpener, paper-cutter, ink-eraser, andthe like. I

- While I have shown one embodiment of my invention,I- do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to beprotected in various. changes, alterations and modifications which may come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. The combination with a cutting blade,

of a casing for said blade, having a corner,

thereof cut ofl so as-to expose a portion of said blade, and a guard at the edge of said blade, connected to said'casinghtlo e said slots sons to cover and uncover the exposed portion 0 blade.

2. The combination with a blade, of a casing for said blade, having a corner thereof cut ofii was to expose a portion of said blade, a ardat the edge of said blade, slidingly, connected to said casing, and means for limiting the motion of said guard.

3. Thc'ycombination with a blade, of a casing for said blade, having a corner there of out OK so as to expose a portion of said guides, sai casing having one corner there of cut away to expose a portion of said blade, and a guard adapted to cover said exposed portion;

5. The combination with a blade, of a casing for said blade, comprising a single .st-rip of metal bent intermediate its ends to form an arch spring tending to force the sides of said casingtogether to grip said blade, and having its ends curled up to form guides, said casing having one corner there of cut away to expose a portion of said blade, and a guard engaging said guides, adapted to cover said exposed portion, said guard being shorter than said casing by an amount equal to the length of the cutaway portion of said casing, so as to fully expose the edgeof said bladeiup to the limitv of said cut-away portion, while said guard still remains within the terminal limits of said casing.

6. The combination with a blade, of a casing for said blade, comprisinga single strip of metal bent intermediate its ends to form engaging said guides,

an arch springtending to force the sides of said casing together to grip said blade, and having its ends curled up to form -guides, said casing having'one corner thereof cut away to-expose a portion of said blade, and a guard engaging said guid adapted to cover said exposed portion, sai guard being shorter than said casing by an amount equal to thelength of the cut-away portion of said casing, so as to fully expose the edge of said blade up to the limit of said cut-away portion, while said ard still remains within the terminal limits of said casing, said guard being in the form of a spring tube having a slot lengthwise thereof, and having means for limiting its motion relative to said casing.

7. The combination with a blade, of :1 casing for said blade, comprising a single strip of metal bent intermediate its ends to form an arch spring tending to force the sides of said casing together to-grip said blade, and. having its ends curled up to form guides, said casing having one corner thereof cut away to expose a portion of said blade, and a guard engaging said guides,

adapted to cover said exposed portion, said guard being shorterthan said casing by an amount equal to the length of the cut-away portion of said casing, so as to full expose the edge of said blade up to the li said cut-away portion, while said guard still remains within the terminal limits of said casing, said guard being in the form of a spring tube having a slot lengthwise thereof, said casing having an opening therein, whereby it may be attached to a support, and also having slots therein, said guar having lugs thereon adapted to engage said slots to limit the motion of said guard relative to said casing.
