ATTACHMENT FOR WIRE-MESH BED-SPRINGS OR THE LIKE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Apri1 15. 1911.
Patented Sept. 17, 1912.
Serial No. 621,251.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN NELSON EAST- WOOD, of Carleton Place, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for VVire-Mesh Bed-Springs or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in attachments for wire mesh bed springs or the like, as described in the present specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially of the novel arrangement and construction of parts, whereby a cross frame is yieldingly supported under the mesh fabric by a pair of side arms adjust-ably fulcrumed on the side bars of the spring frame, and having spring connections with one of the end bars.
The object of the invention is to devise a strong and simple attachment for wire mesh bed springs, which will prevent undue sagging of the mesh in the center portion, and which may readily be attached to the spring frame, and be quickly adjusted to any desired degree of resiliency.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a wire mesh bed spring, having the mesh partly broken away to show the attachment thereunder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the bed spring with the attachment thereon. Fig. 3 is an end view of the bed spring with the attachment thereon. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the cross frame of the attachment, showing a means of reinforcing the same.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is a bed spring frame, having the woven wire mesh 2 stretched thereover as customary.
3 are side arms extending alongside of the side bars of the frame 1, and supported in a tiltable manner by the hooks 4.
3* are headed stud pins projecting inwardly from one end of the side arms 3.
The hooks 4 are substantially S-shape, and have one side section thereof caught over the side bar of the spring frame and the other section caught under the side arm of the attachment, so that they may be moved back and forth in either direction along said side bar and said side arm.
5 is a flat bowed spring firmly secured in the center thereof to the under side of an end bar of the spring frame by the bolts 6.
7 are bolts having the hooked ends 8 caught over the side arm 3 adjacent to one end thereof, said bolts being secured in orifices in the ends of the bowed spring 5 by suitable nuts.
9 is a cross frame comprising the side bars 10 and the cross bars 11; the side bars 10 are notched at 10 midway of the length thereof to fit on the stud pins 3 of the side arms 3, whereby the cross frame 9 is tiltably supported under the wire mesh fabric 2. The cross bars 11 of the cross frame 9 are preferably made extensible to accommodate the device to varying widths of springs. This is accomplished by cutting the cross bars in the center, and joining the two parts thereof by the sleeves 11, in which the ends of the bars 11 are slidably arranged.
From the foregoing description of the parts, it will be readily understood that the attachment may be quickly secured to the frame of a wire mesh bed spring, and that the cross frame will effectually prevent any undue sagging of the mesh.
The springtension may be quickly adjusted by lengthening or shortening the bolts 7 or the hooks 4 may be moved toward either the cross frame or the spring to incease or diminish the flexibility of the same.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a wire mesh bed spring or the like, of a pair of side arms pivotally supported intermediate of their length from the side bars of said bed spring, a cross frame supported by said side arms at one end thereof and extending across the under side of the mesh fabric of said bed spring and spring means for adjustably supporting said side arms at the other end thereof.
2. The combination with a wire mesh bed spring or the like, of a pair of side arms, a pair of hook members caught onto the side bars of said bed spring frame and pivotally supporting said side arms intermediate of the length thereof, a cross frame pivotally supported between the said side arms at one end thereof and extending across the under side of the mesh fabric of said bed spring and a bow spring secured to the end bar of said bed spring frame and to the other end of said side arms.
3. The combination with a wire mesh bed spring or the like, of a pair of side arms, a
. pair of hook members caught onto the side Copies of this patent may be obtained for spring orthe like, of a pair of side arms 5 V yieldingly supported from the frame of said bed spring and having stud pins projecting from one end thereof and a cross frame comprlslng notched side bars'and cross bars extendingbetween said side bars and pivotally '20 sup-ported upon the stud pins of said side ars.
Signed at Ottawa, Canada, this 27th day of March, 1911.
