` Specification of Letters Patent. i
Patented Sept. 17, 1912..
Application iled liovember 2, 1911. Serial No. 658,215.
To all whom t may' concern.' i
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN 4l1". Y A1\I'rIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hollis, in the county of Harmon and State of Oklahoma, have inventedl certain new and useful Improvements in Plumb-Levels, of which the following is a specification.
p This invention relates to improvements inl plumb levels, and has for its object to produce a device of this character in which the indicator is so 'suspended that the same is free to rotate to indicate levels at a time when the stock is in any position.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the speciic structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
ln the drawings, Figure 1 is a. fragmentary side elevation. F ig. 2 isa vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3v is a perspective view of the indicators.
,Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the stock, the same being formed from wood, and provided upon each side with circular recesses 2, said recesses being arranged at the central portion of the stock l and being separated by a partition 3, said partition being provided .with a central perforation 4, and through which a shaft 5 is passed, the opposite ends of said shaft being projected into-each of the recesses 2. Each end of the shaft 5 is provided with a ball race 6, and Ain which are placed ball bearings 7.
uAdapted to be placed upon the opposite' ends of the shaft 5 are indicators 8, each of which consists of a semicircularweight portion 9 and having extended from their upper edges pointers 10. The indicators 9 are each provided with perforations 11, and through which the outer' ends of the shaft 5 are passed to rotatably support the indica tors in their proper position within the recesses 2. The inner walls of the perfora tions 11 are provided with race ways l2, which coincide with the race ways 6 of the shaft 5 to hold the ball bearings 7 from be coming displaced. The shaft 5 is further rovided at each of its ends with threaded ores 13, and in which are threaded the threaded Shanks 14 of securing devices 15,
'and when said securing devices are in their proper (position, the indicators 8 are prevented from becoming accidentally displaced, but at the same time are permitted to rotate freely.
Suitably secured in the recesses 2 and l flush against the faces thereof are disks 16, each of which being provided with a central aperture 17 and through which the shaft 5 is passed. The disks 16 are each provided with peripheral graduations 18, as is usual in. instruments of this character. 16 may be secured within the recesses 2 in any suitable manner.
The stock l is provided adjacent the recesses 2 with annular shoulders 19,.and in which are seated transparent dials 20, the same being held in place by rings 21, said rings being secured to the stock by passing screws 22 therethrough, the inner ends' of l which being embedded in the rock.
From this construction it will be seen that the indicators may rotate freely on the shaft 5 no matter in what position the stock is held.
WV hat is claimed is:`
A plumb level comprising a stock, recesses formed in each side thereof, said recesses being separated by a partition, a perforation formed in the central portions of thel partition, a shaftmounted in said perforations and having its ends projected into the recesses and formed with race ways, disks se-icured in the recesses and provided with peripheral graduations, indicators rotatably mounted upon each end of said shaft, said indicators consisting of a weighted portionv and pointers, race ways formed at the pointof conjunction of the weighted portion and' pointers, said pointers being adapted to coact with the graduations to indicate the different positions of the stock when the race Ways are confronting and balls placed therebetween, and nie-an's for removably securing the indicators to the shaft.
In testimony whereof l afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.:
BENJAMIN F. YANT'IS. Witnesses:
