To allwkom it may. concern:
wBeitknown that I, DONALD G. KRUDor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manhattan, in 'thecounty of Riley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ban-Bells, of which the following, is a specification.
This invention relates to: bar bells,v and more particularly to a bar bell especially adapted; for. usein performing exercises in connection with physical. culture.
Qneof, the main objects of the invention is to provide a bar bell of simpleconstruction, the weight of which may be readily varied to suit circumstances. A; further ob ject is to provide a bar bell which may be produced at very small cost in which the weight members may be formed by one or more elements which may be secured on, or removed from, the bar. A further object is to provide a bar bell which employs reinforced concrete elements to form the weight members, these elements being so constructed as to prevent wear or breakage of the same. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.

This bar is further provided with a plurality of longi tudinally extending grooves 3. These grooves extend substantially the full length of the threaded portions of the bar and are spaced equally about the bar.
Adjacent each end of the bar 1 is mounted a weight member 4. This member is in the form of a disk and is formed from reinforced concrete which may be east in suitable molds and is provided with reinforcing elements 5. At the center of weight member 4 is secured a thimble 6 which is pro vided at each end with an outer annular flange 7. This thimble extends t rough the central portion of member 4, the flanges 7 serving as retaining membersfor the concrete forming the body of the disk so as to prevent breakage thereofi and: also providing wear members or plates for: engagement by thesocuring collars 8 which are threaded onto the bar and? engage the opposite ends of thimble .7, so as to secure the weight member 4 against movement longitudinally of thebar. The thimble 6 is of such interior diameter as to snugly receive the bar so as to slidably mount the weight member there on. After-this member has been thus placed on the bar, it may be readily secured in longitudinal adjustment thereon by means of the locking collars 8. Each collar 8 is provided with. a set screw 9 threaded there through which is adapted to engage into any one of the grooves 3 of the bar, selectively. This set screw serves in this manner to prevent rotation of the collar 8, thus positively locking the weight disk or member in adjustment. While I have shown but one disk adjacent each end of the bar, it will be understood, of course, that as many disks as desired may be employed thus permitting the weight of the bar to be readily varied or adjusted to suit circumstances. Also, the distance of the weights which are formed by the members 4. from the longitudinal center of the bar may be readily adjusted thus giving either a long or short bar. Of course, if desired, a short bar can be used so as to produce the ordinary dumbbell in place of the bar bell which employs the longer bar. By forming the weight members from concrete, these members may be readily produced at small cost, and the thimbles 6 having the outer annular flanges 7 serve to effectually prevent breakage or wearing away of the weight members at the centers thereof. Also, as above noted, these flanges provide wear plates for engagement with the locking collars 8 thus effectually preventing breakage or wear of the central portion of the disk by these collars when threaded into tight engagement therewith.
It will be evident that there may be slight changes made in the construction and arrangement of the details of my invention without departing from the field and scope of the same, and I intend to include all such variations, as fall within the scope of a bar, said bar having each end po'rtionexteriorly threaded, weight members slidably mounted on the bar adjacent each end thereof, and locking collars threaded on the bar and engaging said weight members'so as to prevent movement thereof longitudinally of the bar. 1
2. In a device of the character described, a bar having its end portions threaded,
' weight members mounted on said bar adj acent each end thereof, each of said members being provided with a thimble extending through the center thereof and slidably receiving the bar, and locking collars thread ed on the end portion of the bar and engag ing each end of said thimble so as to prevent movement of said weight member longitudinally of the bar.
3. In a device of the character described, a bar having its end portions threaded, weight members slidably mounted on said bar adjacent each end thereof, locking collars threaded on the bar' and engaging the n op.posite faces of said weight member so as to prevent movement of the same longitudinally of the bar, and means for preventing rotation of said locking collars.

A weight member for use in connection with bar bells comprising a concrete body provided at its central portion with a thimble extending through said body and adapted to receive a bar inserted therethrough, said thimble being provided at each end with an outerannular flange projecting over the lateral face of said member and s'erving as reinforcing and retaining members for the body of theweight member, said flanges also providing we-aringplates for engagement by locking collars threaded on a bar upon which the weight member is mounted.
