To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD LAFRENIERE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting- Covers for Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in covers for protecting the hands ofoperators from coming in contact with white shoes while being manufactured and consists in a simple and efficient device of this nature adapted to be applied after the shoe is lasted and to remain upon the same until it is finished.

The invention consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view through the shoe and cover applied. Fig. 3 is a view of the cover removed from the shoe, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section longitudinally through the tip of the shoe and band retaining device.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a shoe which has been lasted, and B designates a band, preferably of resilient metal, such as steel, and made to conform to the contour of the last just above the sole and said band is provided with lugs D projecting substantially at right angles from the inner edge thereof and which are adapted to engage underneath the inwardly turned portion of the upper adjacent to the location where it is stitched to the sole. Said band has cut away portions F upon its lower edge adjacent to its ends and provided so as to allow the operator an opportunity to shave the heel without interference with said band. Any suitable fastening means is provided for holding the ends of. the band about the rear portion of the heel, such as a strap H which is secured to one end and adapted to engage a buckle K fastened to the other end, although various forms of fastening means may be used other than the one illustrated, if desired.

A cover, designated by letter N, is fastened in any suitable way, preferably to the inner face of the metallic band and thus forming a means for covering all of the shoe abovethe sole, thus forming a protection to prevent the hands of the operator coming in contact with and soiling white or delicately colored shoes.

In practice, it is my purpose to apply the cover as soon as the shoe is lasted and allow the same to remain in place after the shoe is completed, after which the cover may be readily detached and used repeatedly on other shoes.

What I claim to be new is 1. A device for protecting light colored uppers of shoes while being manufactured, comprising a metallic band having projections for engagement with a lasted shoe, a cover secured to said band, and means for fastening the latter to the shoe, as set forth.

2. A device for protecting light colored uppers of shoes while being manufactured, comprising a metallic band having projections for engagement witha lasted shoe, a cover secured to said band, a strap fastened to one end of the band, and a buckle upon the other end adapted to be engaged by said strap, as set forth.

3. A device for protecting light colored uppers of shoes while being manufactured, comprising a metallic band having inwardly extending projections at right angles to the band adapted to engage under the shoe above the sole, a cover fastened to the band, and means for fastening the band about the heel of the shoe, as set forth.
