Application filed August 18,1911. Serial No. 644,793.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAM S. HAMILTON, citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Nanaimo, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Detonator-Magazine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a box for carrying detonator caps, such as are used in con junction with a fuse in blast firing, and the device is designed to meet the requirements of the various governments in providing a locked box or magazine in which these caps may be safely carried by the firing boss or other authorized person and from which they may be delivered, one at a time, as required.
In a recent application, at present pending before the Oflice, application was made on a rotatable magazine wherein the detonator compartments were introduced radi ally from the circumferential surface of the container. In this application the compartments are introduced from an end face of the magazine and their axes are parallel to the axis of rotation, by which means a larger number of compartments may be provided within the same dimension of magazine and a simpler mechanism can be applied for delivering the detonators and for locking the closure thereafter.
The invention is particularly described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is acco1npanied, in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the device, Fig. 2 is a face view detached, of the magazine body, Fig. 8, a similar view of its cover inverted, Figs. 4 and 5, similar views showing the successive movements of the shutter in opening the two delivery apertures, and Fig. 6, a view of the lever key by which the closing shutter is opened.
In these drawings 2 represents an annular magazine body one face of which is previded with a closed end 3 and in the other face is introduced a series of detonator conipartments 4. These are preferably arranged in concentric rings. The open ends of these compartments 4 are closed with a cover 6 rotatably mounted on a pin 10 which pin is also the screw which secures the cover on the magazine body. The head of the screw by which the pivot pin is withdrawn and the cover released, is sunk in a recess 9 so that it requires a special key to remove the cover, which key will only be in the possession of authorized persons. The cover 6- is provided with an aperture 7 and 8 for each ring of detonator compartments 4 in the. :body 2 and'these apertures 7 and '8 of the.
this the shutter on one side is provided with.
an aperture 14 which is brought into register with the aperture 8of the cover by an angular movement of the shutter less than Specification of Letters Patent. P tented Sept. 10,1912.
required to uncover the aperture 7 of the l 1 quired to be under the control of authorized parties only, the shutter 11 is opened with a lever key 15, see Fig. 6, the operating end 16 of which is inserted in a key hole 17 provided in the cover 6 and will engage and rotate the shutter when turned as indicated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. The lever handle of the key, when the key is inserted, lies parallel to the face of 6 and projects slightly beyond its rim so that it may be manipulated to open the desired aperture 7 or 8 and at the same time the cover 6 may be rotated to bring that aperture 7 or 8 in register with a detonator compartment.
A simple, convenient and effective magazine is thus provided within which the detonators are safely retained each in a separate compartment and normally inaccessible to any except the authorized person carrying the key, by whom the detonators may be removed as required, one at a time.
- Having now particularly described my invention and the manner of its use, I hereby declare that what I claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is:
1. A detonator magazine comprising a body havin a set of detonator compartments paral el to its axis, a cover swivelly mounted on said body to close said compartments, said cover having apertures which may be brought in register with the several detonator compartments, a shutter normally closing the cover apertures, means continuously tending to move said shutter to its aperture closing position, said shutter having a key receiving portion and said cover having a key hole slot, and a key mounted on said cover and having a portion to enter said key hole slot and engage said shutter to move the same to open said cover apertures.
2. A detonator magazine comprising a body having a set of detonator compartments parallel to its axis and having a central chamber, a lug projecting upwardly into said central chamber, a cover mounted over said body to form a closure for said chamber, said cover having a depending hollow lug alining with said body lug, and a screw passing swivelly through said hollow lug into said body lug to swivelly connect said cover to said body, said cover having apertures which may be brought into register with the several detonator compartments, said cover having an inner recess, a shutter mounted swivelly on said hollow lug to normally close the cover apertures, a spring mounted beneath said cover and held in said central chamber for continuously tending to move said shutter to its aperture closing position, and means for moving said shutter to its aperture opening position.
3. A detonator magazine comprising a body having a set of detonator c0mpartments parallel to its axis and having a central chamber, a lug projecting upwardly into said central chamber, a cover mounted over said body to form a closure for said chamber, said cover having a dependin hollow lug alining with said body lug, and a screw passing swivelly through said hollow lug into said body lug to swivelly connect said cover to said body, said cover having apertures which may be brought into register with the several detonator compartments, said cover having an inner recess, a shutter mounted swivelly on said hollow lug to normally close the cover apertures, a spring mounted beneath said cover and held in said central chamber for continuously tending to move said shutter to its aperture closing position, and means for moving said shutter to its aperture opening position, said last named means comprising a key, said cover having a key hole slot through which said key may be inserted, said shutter having a key receiving recess and a shoulder to cooperate with said key in virtue of which said shutter may be moved by said key.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
