UNITED STATES PATENT ormcn HUGO GOLDAU, 0F Zfi'LLICI-IAU, GERMANY.
APPARATUS FOR FLUSHING WATER-CLOSETS AND THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUeo GoLnAU, a sub ject of the King of Prussia, residing at Ziillichau, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Flushing Water-Closets and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to an apparatus for flushing water closets, and the like, and is designed to enable two different quantitles of water to be caused to flow into the closet pan, so that either the usual, or a smaller, flushing action is obtained. For this purpose a siphon of usual construction with a valve at the bottom end of the siphon proper, hereinafter called the hood, is provided with a device which will enable said hood, not only to be raised to the extent necessary for obtaining the usual siphon flushing action, but also through a shorter stroke, which is so regulated by stops or the like that the flow of the water in the pipe connecting the reservoir of the siphon with the closet pan is insufficient to cause the necessary suction for producing a siphon action. In comparison with the devices heretofore employed for obtaining the same effect the present invention has the advantage that it can be applied to every existing siphon having an outlet valve integral with the hood and adapted, according as the hood is raised or not, to open and close the top end of the pipe leading to the pan.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention by way of example: The figure is a side elevation and part section of a siphon provided with two levers adapted to cause the hood to be raised to different extents.
The lever arm a connected with the siphon hood 6 is longer than the lever arm 0, by which the common flushing action is obtained. Said lever arm a carries a handle d through the agency of the rod 6, in which a tightening device f is preferably provided. To the rod 6 or handle 03 a hook or other suitable device may be attached, in order to keep the lever arm and handle in the depressed position and a stop it may be provicled to limit the movement of the rod 6 whereby to prevent lifting the hood to the Specification of Letters Patent.

extent necessary for the production of a siphon action.
The lever arm 0 carries a handle d by means of the rod 6 and said rod 6 is preferably caused to actuate a counting device 9, so that every movement of the lever c is recorded. The movement of the rod e can By pulling the handle d shorter lever 0 will raise the hood 6 through its entire stroke, while, on depressing the handle d through the same distance, the longer lever 0 will. raise the hood 6 through a much shorter distance. In the first case the siphon will come into action, so that the reservoir 2' will be entirely emptied through the pipe is, while in the second case the valve Z at the bottom end of the hood 6 will only be partially opened, so that the water issuing from the reservoir 2' into the pipe in will not entirely fill out the section of this pipe. As a consequence the siphon action will not take place, and thewater will only continue to flow'as long as the handle cl is held in the lower position. On releasingsaid handle d the hood 6 and valve Z will be lowered, so that the flow of Water into the pipe 7:: will cease.
What -I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
In a device of the character described, the.
combination of a reservoir having an outlet, a hood movable in said reservoir above the outlet, a valve at the bottom of the hood and movable therewith, a pair of pull members, and a pair of levers connecting said pull members with the hood, one of said levers being pivotally supported at a point adjacent its point of connection with the hood, and the other lever being pivotally support-- ed at a point remote from the said hood connection, for the purpose described, and a stop to control the movement of the pull member attached to the first mentioned lever.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification'in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HUGO GOLDAU.
