To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES ALFRED VVALDEoK, a citizen of the United'States, residing in Catonsville, in Baltimore'county and the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improved Flash-Light Apparatus.
This invention relates to a flashlight apparatus, the primary object of the invention being to provide an apparatus of'this char acter which is simple, reliable and-eflicient in construction, and which embodies a re.- ceptacle to contain the flashlight charge and means for igniting the charge which'z m'ay be operated at a distance from the receptacle, thereby enabling the operation to be carried out without danger to the operator.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described and. claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of an igniting apparatus embodying my invention, showing the igniter as it appears before operation. Fig. 2 is a front perspective view of the same, showing the igniter projected into the casing to ignite the combustible material therein. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the igniter detached.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a box or casing 1 having a lid or cover 2 hinged or pivoted thereto, as at 3, said lid or cover being provided with a transverse slot or opening 1 extending through its free edge and of tapering form longitudinally, as shown. The casing and lid may be made of steel or other suitable strong and durable material, and, if desired, the interior of the casing may be provided with a bed or layer 5 of asbestos or other suitable non-combustible material to support the fuse, cartridge or powder which is to be fired. The lid is adapted to be turned to a vertical position for use of the apparatus, in which position it will be retained and held from outward movement by friction of the parts of the hinges or pivots 3.
Suitably secured upon the rear wall of the casing is a socket or retaining member 6 adapted to support a bracket 7, said bracket having at one end a downturned tapered finger 8 to fit within said socket. The outer or free end of the bracket is vertically slotted to receive an igniter 9, said igniter comprising a lever arm pivotally mounted.

The upper 'and longer end of the lever arm carries atubular holder 12 arranged atright anglesthereto and adapted for the receptionof a wax taper 13 or other suitable combustible material, the forward end of which projects beyond the front endof the tube for ignition. The tube carries a transverse pin 14 adapted to be adjusted to bind against the taper to prevent the same from sliding unduly in the holder 12 and to regulate the extent of projection of the taper beyond the forward end of the tube. When the igniter is detached by withdrawing the bracket from engagement with the socket 6, the lever arm may be swung to a position substantially parallel with the body of the bracket and stored therewith in the box or casing 1.
In the use of the device, the apparatus is arranged for operation as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the material to be ignited being placed upon the asbestos 5 and the igniting device set with the front end of the taper 13 lighted, as illustrated. The operator, at the proper time, pulls upon the cord 11, thus swinging the igniter on its pivot pin to project the lighted end of the torch through the opening 4;, l the flame of the torch thus being brought into juxtaposition with the combustible material in the casing, whereby said material will be ignited.
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. A flashlight apparatus comprising an oblong rectangular receptacle, a cover hinged to one of the side walls of the receptacle and having a slot therein, a lever pivotally mounted upon the outer face of said side wall of the receptacle, an igniter arranged upon and transversely to said lever and adapted to be projected thereby through said slot into said receptacle, and means for operating the lever.
2. A flashlight apparatus comprising an oblong rectangular receptacle, a cover hinged to one of the side walls of the receptacle and having a slot therein, a lever pivotally mounted upon the outer face of said side wall of the receptacle, a tube mounted transversely upon the free end of said lever and adapted to be projected by a movement thereof through said slot into said receptacle, a taper of combustible material extending through said tube, a clamp upon the tube for securing said taper in adjusted position, and means for operating the lever.
3. A flashlight apparatus comprising an oblong rectangular receptacle, a cover hinged to one of the side walls of said receptacle and having a slot therein, a socket mounted upon the outer .face of said side wall, a bracket comprising outwardly converging arms having down-turned tapered fingers to fit within said socket, a lever pivotally mounted between the converging ends of the arms, an igniter arranged at right angles upon the upper end of the lever and adapted to be projected by a movement thereof through said slot into said receptacle, and means for operating the lever.
4. In a flash light apparatus, the combination of an open-topped receptacle,'a lid wall of the receptacle, a bracket composed of spaced and outwardly converging members provided at their converging ends with a coupling pin and at their diverging ends with tapered fingers to fit within said socket,
' a lever pivotally mounted upon said coupling pin, a tube carried by the free end of the lever, a combustible taper fitted within the tube, and means connected with the lever for swinging the same to project the tube through said slot in the cover into the receptacle.
