Description
f tnittdl tant @wat @Mitra Letters Patent Nol-103,814, dated allay 31, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOUNTAIN S.
The Schedule referred to in .these Letters Patent and making part of the seme.
To all whom it may concern Bc it known that I, ARTHUR AP. YATns, of the city of Syracusein the countyot' Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Portable Fountain 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing which forms a part ot' this specification.
The fountain is made of met-al, and principally 0f east-iron, with a flexible bag made of rubber or other suitable water and air-tight material suitable for the purpose. y
A represents the base of the fountain.
B represents the rst basin, and
C, the second basin.
Other basins may be added above the basin C, as may be desired.
The base A is made hollow, according to' any desirable pattern', and underneath the saine is fitted the false bottom D, which forms the support for the reserv'oir R, which false bottom is made with a recess, a, into whichthe lower end of the flexible bag c is nserted, and around which, in the recess a, asmall wire is driven down to form a water and air-tight. joint 01 said joint may be made in any other ordinary manner.
lhe reservoir R is also provided with a cover, F, to which is attached (and it may be a part thereof, or otherwise attached in any ordinary 1nanuer,) the hollow stem G which extends through the bottom of the rst basin B, and has a shoulder, o, for the basin B to rest upon, as shown in the drawing, and the stem G also passes through the upper portion of the base A, and is made to slide up and down through the top of said'base A.
At a convenient point on the top of the base A is placed a pinion, H, which is geared into the rack a'; which rack a forms a part of or is irmly attached to the stem G.
Through the cover l is the ralve V, supported by the rod lr and spring s, as shown in the drawing.
The cover Falso has an opening for the jet-pipe P.
At the upper end of the stem G, as far as it extends into the basin B, a thread is cut. to receive the bottom of the column M, which supports the second basin C, which is madehollow for the jet-pipcto pass through, and with small openings t t near the bottom, for the water to return to the reservoir R.
The upper end ofthe hago is made to forni a water and air-tight joint with the cover F, bymeans ofthe Arecessp around the outer edge thereof", into which the bag is pressed by means ot' a cord or wire, or in any other manner to make a water or air-tight joint.
lbe fountain is then made to operate as follows:
W'ater is poured int-o the basin B until it is nearly full; experience will'indicate about how unich to use.
By applying the key K to the pinion H the basins B and C will be raised and the valve V opened, so as to let the water pass down into the reservoir R.- I
The superincnnibent weight pressing upon the water in the reservoir -It closes 'the valve V and forces the water up through the jet-pipe P,.as fully shown in the drawing.
The reservoir lt may bc made entirely of rubber or other flexible material, and attached by a suitable air and water-tight joint tothe bottom of the stem' G, and provided with a valve, V, and opening for the jetpipe l), located substantially as shown in the drawing.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is-
1. The tiexible reservoir It, combined with afountain in such a manner that the weight of the fountain- 4basin or basins compresses the reservoir, and thereby produces the jet ot water, substantially as herein specilied. I I
2. The self-acting valveV, in combination with the flexible reservoir 1t and'movable compressing-basin or basins B O, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
3. The same parts in combination with the rack a' and pinion H, substantially as above set forth.
ARTHUR P. YATES. Witnesses:
C. W. SMITH, l N. B. SMITH.
