IMPROVED TUMBLER-WASHER.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same- To all rwhom it may concern:

Be it known that VI, JOHN MATTHEWS, J r of the city, county, a-nd State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tuinbler-Vashers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in )vhich- Figure 1 represents a plan of a tumbler-washing apparatus constructed in accordance with my improve-v ment, and

Figure 2, a vertical section ofthe same.

My invention consists in an apparatus, embracing several novel features, by which tumblers, cups, or glasses, may be washed with efficiency and despatch, both as regards tlieir inside and outside surfaces, and under pressure of water as forced or supplied in jets, although the source from which the cleansing water is drawn gives no head or pressure.

Such apparatus will be found of great use in country and other places, where water for cleansing and 4other purposes is only obtainable from springs and other like sources, and will prove a great convenience in hotels and on soda-water fountains or stands.

Referring to the accompanying drawing- A represents a basin-like base, which is designed to rest on a table, counter, or stand, and that communicates, by draining ape jtnres a a, with a central discharging-chamber, B, for foul and drainage water, said chamber serving, if desired, to support the basin, also being provided with a downwardly-projectiug pipe-like stem or outlet, O, preferably of cylindrical form, and that, passing through a hole in the counterfmay have any suitable pipe or hose connected with it, as at b, for running olf the escaping dirty or waste water into a bucket or other receiver, drain or channel.

A screw-thread, c, may be formed around this stem, at a suitable distance below the chamber B, for firmly securing the apparatus on its table 'or stand, by means of'a nut fitted on said screw-thread, and made to bear on or against the under surface of the stand.

The base or basin A may be formed at its centre with a cylindrical upward projection, d, which serves as a duct for the water fouled by washing, and which Vmay likewise serve as an exterior guide to a hollow ver-tical shaft or tubular column, D, that, in the operation of the apparatus, is worked up and down, Aand may serve the threefold purpose of forming a handle or means for working the apparatus, a supportfor the tumbler-guide and rest, and a duct forthe water fouled in washing to escape. Said column also indirectly serves to convey up through it the water. used for cleaning the tumblers. l

Arranged concentrically within, or so that it projects up through the tubular stem or outlet C, and in suitable fixed connection with it, in a ipanner so as not to obstruct free passage down said stem', is a cleanwater supply or feed-duct, E, which may be connected by a pipe or hose, at its lower end, with a bucket or other vessel containing water suitable for washing-purposes, and which carries, at its top, a valve, F, openinglupward; also has screwed on to ita hollow upright stationary ram or plug, G, arranged to occupy aconcentric position or thereabouts within the column D. Fitting freely but closely, (by the aid of a stuiingbox, s,) around and over this stationary ram, which is left open at its top, is a vertically-reciprocating pumping barrel, H, that carries, at its upper end, a valve, I, opening outward, and is connected in any suitable positive mannerwith the column D, so that as the latter is worked up and' down by the operator, it serves to similarly reciprocate theI barrel; thus the valve I may be carried by a box, e, screwed into the upper end of thebairel H, and the column D be made to rest and be' secured thereon by or through a tumbler-rest .and guide, attached to the upper portion ofthe column,

and clamped to or on the top of the barrel or its valvebox e, by a distributing cap, K, alranged to screw on to the valve-box.

Such tumbler-rest and guide, which also serves as an outside sprinkler or Washer to the tumbler, may be constructed in any suitable manner, but is here shown as made up of hollow bent arms J J, of a proper curvature to receive and hold in an easy but steady manner an inverted tumbler, and in communication at their upper ends with the interior of the distributingcap K, while `their outer ends are bent upward in conformity with a basin-like construction to the top of the column D, and perforated as at ff.

rlhe cap`K, which is preferably made of a conical form,iisalso perforated, as at g g, to adapt it as an inside washer to the tumbler; and the upper portion of the stem of the valve I may likewise be perforated, to act in concert with the cap as a distributer of the `water to the inside of the tumbler.

.A spring, M, which may, if desired, bevregulated by an adjustable tension-device, is introduced between the stationary ram G and upper portion of the barrel H, to support the latter with its pertaining parts and column D, and to throw them up after the same have been forced or presseddown by the hand, as applied to the column or tumbler resting on the arms J J. For this purpose, the spring M may rest upon a step formed within the stationary ram.

In using the apparatus, the tumbler is slipped upside down upon the arms J J, andthe column D, with its pertaining parts, including the barrel'H, rapidly i worked up and down by the hand, either as applied to said column lor by pressure on top of the tumbler being washed.- This gives a pumping action to the apparatus, and, by the aid of the valves F and I, causes the clean or washing water, in the upward stroke of the washed, they may be laid,.in inverted positions, on

What'is here claimed, and desired to be secured. by Letters Pat-ent, is

1. A tumbler-Washing apparatus, constructed'to.

operate -as a pump 4on elevating and depressing the support which carries the tumbler, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the stationary hollow ram G, the vertically-reciprocating barrel H, Wit-h their valves F I, the perforated distributing cap K, and th'e tumbler-guide and rest J J, essentially as described.

3. ',lhe tumbler-guide and rest J J, constructed to operate as an outside washer, in combination with the distributing cap YK, forming an inside washer to the tumbler, the pumping barrel H, and the stationary hollow ram G, with their valves I and F, essentially as specified. A

4. The combination, with the pumping barrel H, and hollow ram G, of the 'column D, constructed and arranged for operation in connection with the tumblerrest and inside and outside sprinklers or washers, essentially as described, and whereby the water to be used in washing and as fouled by'washing is passed within and through or undercover of said operating column, substantially as herein set forth.
