Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
JOSEPH H. COYNE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND MICHAEL A. BURDETTE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN slNKs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,414, dated November 26, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. COYNE, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Sinks, of which the following is aspeciication:
The vapors and efduvia escaping into apartments from sinks are fruitful sources of sickness, and, in consequence of the siphon action f in the trap usually employed, there is great ing to the sewer-pipe, thereby preventing the escape ot' vaporsv or smell or retaining water in the sink, and my device can be applied to sinks already constructed and in use.
In the drawing, Figure l is a plan of my .valve applied to a sink, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section ofthe same.
The sink a is of any usual character, and provided with the strainer or grating b covering the end of the sewer-pipe c. The valve d is made with a flexible or elastic face, of rubber, leather, or similar material, and with a knob or handle, e, by means of which it is to be moved so as to cover or uncover the strainer b. I prefer to attach this valve by an arm and s'crew or rivet, e', so that it can be swung over the strainer or away from the same; hence, with sinks that are already in use this valve can be attached by boring a hole through the bottom and inserting a shouldered bolt with putty, and screwing upon thelower end the nut. In cases where the sink is to be constructed with reference to receiving this valve there may be ribs upon the surface, between which the valve may be slid.
The removable valve d applied toand combined with the strainer or grating of a sink, substantially as andfor the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 4th day of October, A.D.
JOSEPH HENERY COYNE. Witnesses:
CHARLES C. WAKELEY, E. G. MYERS.
