Letters Patent No. 103,781, dated May 31,1870.
IMPROVED LOCK lEOIR TRAVBLING-IBAG-S.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making vpart: of the sanne.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOSEPH B. SARGENT, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Locking Attachment for Traveling-Bags; and I do hereby'declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent in -Figure 1, a top view, and in Figure 2, a top View, illustrating a different arrangement of the same locking device.
'.lhis invention relates to an improvement in traveling-ba gs and similar articles, the object being to secure the bag temporarily in any desired position, as in railroadcars.' .lV'hen the occupant desires to leave his seat, the bag is placed upon the seat, but is liable to be removed or stolen by evil-disposed persons. By this attachment the bag may be easily secured to the seat so that no person but the owner can take it therefrom.
` 'lhe invention consists iu the arrangement of a chain, cord, strap, or equivalent therefor, one end of which is secured to the bag in any convenient place, the other endprovided with a cross-bar or similar device, which may be turned into line with the chain, but, when left free, turns itself` a't right angles, or'nearly so, or so as to enlarge the end ot' the chain, and the bag provided with an eyelet or other similar'opening to the interior of the bag, so that the said attachment, being passed around any part ofthe thing to which it is desired to secure the bag, and ihe bar or end dropped through the said opening into the bag, the bar turns, or the end enlarges, so that the attachment cannot be drawn from the bag without irst opening the bag.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. 1
`A is a bag of any known construction or size, here represented as a bag folding at the center B, and secured by a common bag-lock and key. v
C is a chain or equivalent therefor, one end permanently xed'to the ring a, the other end provided with a cross-bar, d, passed vthrough the ring f, the bar preventing its withdrawal. In this position the attach- I ment G serves the 'purpose of a handle for carrying the bag. j Y
When it is desired to leave the bag, or for any purpose to secure and prevent its removal 'withoutthe knowledge of the owner, the har end is detached from the ring f and the barpassed through an eyelet or suitable opening, e, into the bag.
So soon as the bar is in thebag, it turns and lies across the opening, so as to prevent its removal from the bag. The attachment, before the endl is inserted into the bag, is passed around the thing to which 1t 1s desired to secure the bag. Thus secured, itis safe from removal except by the owner, who, wheirhe de sires to loose the bag, .unlocks and opens the bag, so as to take the har in his hand and return it through the opening.
Anotherarrangement of this same attachment/ I show in figa", where another eyelet or opening, b, is formed, and the attachment O provided with a crossbar at both ends. One bar is inserted into one opening, and, when not 4required for use, the chain all passes into the bag, leaving only the bar outside, as represented in the drawings.
Then, when it is desired tosecure the bag, take hold of the har (Z, draw out the chain, as denoted at W, pass it around the thing to which it is to be secured, and insert the bar into the otherV opening b.
Another arrangementof the same attachment is by simply employing the chain as last described, and using only one opening or eyelet'e, the chain drawn from the bag in like manner, passed around the thing to which it is to be secured, and the end passed through the same opening e.
\Vhile I prefer a chain for the attachment, and bclievc it to be the best material for the purpose, I desire to be understood by the name chain as embracing any suitable material.
Having fully described iny invention,
What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The device for securing-traveling-bags to seats or other articles, consisting ot' a chain, G, with a crosshar, d, attached to the bag, and operating in the manner described,
