\ UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
GEORGE B; THURBER, OF LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.
HINGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. THURBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved adjustable door hinge and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved door hinge by means of which a door may be readily hung and adjusted so as to swing easily and without binding in the jambs.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one leaf of my improved hinge. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the other leaf. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the sleeve. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the barrel. Fig. 5 is a horizontal transverse sectional view of my improved hinge showing the same applied to a door and door jamb. Fig. 6 is partly an elevation and partly a sectional view of my improved hinge 'with the parts assembled, and on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a pair of hinge leaves 1, 2. The leaf 1 is provided at its inner edge with a web 3 which. is curved or offset as shown and terminates in a wedge-shaped portion 4 which is at right angles to the general plane of said leaf. rlhe leaf 2 is provided at its upper and lower ends at its inner edge with upper and lower knuckles 5, 6 which are spaced apart to receive the'web 3 between them, the said space between the said knuckles exceeding the width of the said web. The upper knuckle 5 has a screw threaded central opening for the reception of a pivot screw 7. The lower knuckle 6 has a vertical central opening for the reception of a pivot pin or other suitable pivot element 8.
Between the knuckles of the leaf 2 lis placed a cylindrical barrel 9 closed at its lower end, open at its upper end and having in one side a slot 10 for the receptionof the wedge-shaped portion 4 of the web 3. In the lower end of the said barrel is an opening 11 for the reception of the upper Specification of Letters Patent. f

end of the pivot pin S. In the said barrel is placed a movable sleeve 12 which has a wedge-shaped opening 13 for the reception of the wedge-shaped port-ion 4. The upper end of the sleeve is provided with a central aperture 14 for the reception of the reduced and headed lower end of the adjusting screw 7 and hence by turning the screw the sleeve may lbe forced into engagement with the wedge-shaped portion of the web of the leaf l so as to firmly secure said leaf 1 to the barrel and sleeve and hence thereby secure saidleaf 1 tothe leaf 2 for angular movement with respect thereto.
It will be understood that the wedgeshaped portion 4 is movable laterally in the barrel 9 and thesleeve 12 so that when hanging the door the latter may be readily adjusted between the jambs to hang in a ,perfectly vertical position or incline slightly with the ambs if the latter are not perfectly perpendicular and hence cause the door to always swing freely.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is f 1. A hinge comprising a pair of leaves, one having a pair of spaced lugs on one edge and the other having a web on the corresponding edge, said web having a wedgeshaped portion, abarrel disposed and movable between the lugs of the first-mentioned leaf and having a slot receiving the wedgeshaped portion of the web of the other leaf, a pivot for one end of the barrel, a sleeve in the barrel having a. wedge-shaped slot for the reception of the wedge-shaped portion of the said leaf and an adjustable pivot element in one of the lugs of the first-named leaf and engaging one end of the sleeve.
2. A hinge comprising a pair of leaves, one having a pair of spaced lugs on one edge and the other having a web on the corresponding edge, said web extending laterally from the leaf and terminating in a wedge-shaped portion` disposed at right angles to the general plane of the leaf, a barrel disposed and movable vertically between the lugs of the first-mentioned leaf and having a slot receiving the said wedgeshaped portion of the web of the other leaf, a pivotfor one end of the barrel, a sleeve in the barrel having a wedge-shaped slot for the reception of the Wedge-shaped pormeans to secure said Web in an adjusted potion of the said leaf and an adjustable pivot sition in said barrel. 10 element in one of the lugs of the first-named In testimony whereof I afliX my signature leaf and engaging one end of the sleeve. in presence of two Witnesses.
3. In a hinge7 the combination of a leaf, GEORGE Bi THURBER. a barrel pivotally connected to said leaf Witnesses: and a second leaf having a Web to engage LORAINE FOLLETT, and movable laterally in said barrel and' BLANCHE E. GARRETT.
