UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. KNAPP, OF NEWBURG, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE OHIO VARNISH COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A. CORPORATION OF OHIO.
GBAINING-TOOL.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, lVILLIAM J. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburg city, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Graining= Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide a graining tool which while being cheap in construct-ion, shall be efiioientin service, shall possess the capacity of being both a rocking pad and a comb, and very convenient for both uses, and shall enable the user to get close to the corners of a room, or into other confined space.
The invention comprises the means I have employed in obtaining the above objects, including broadly a segmental head carrying a yielding surface and a suitable operating handle.
The particular embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing hereof is also comprised within my invention.
As shown in the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of my graining tool complete; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation thereof.
Referring to the drawing by reference letters, A represents a segmental head which is shown as a semicylinder of wood. Embracing the curved surface of this head is a soft sheet B, of felt for example, and outside of this is a rubber graining pad C. This pad has formed on it concentric ribs 0, leaving grooves between them. The graining pad and the interposed soft sheet may be secured to the head in any suitable manner, as for example, by nails D.driven through them into the head.
E represents a handle which is secured to the head in a suitable manner. The handle is preferably of wood and occupies an inclined socket a formed in the head, as shown in the drawing. The handle is removable and may occupy either of the holes a to present any portion of the pad C to the work, as desired.
Owing to the position of the handle the tool naturally occupies the most desirable position in graining a floor. In performing such work the operator is usually on his knees, and I have found that with the handle at about the angle shown in Fig. 2,

he may most conveniently hold and manipulate the tool, rocking it on the surface and sliding it-along to produce the graining effect. Moreover, this angular position of the handle allows the operator to work the tool close to the wall with the portion of the tool opposite the handle. .The elasticity of the rubber pad and the intermediate felt pad allows the tool to be forced down into the corner so that substantially the entire floor surface may be engaged. Or the handle may be removed entirely for close work in .corners. By having the two sockets a, the handle may extend in the direction to present to the floor or other surface being grained either those ribs 0 which are of comparatively short radius, or those of comparatively large radius, as desired, enabling variety to be produced in the graining effect. Moreover, by turning my tool over, the extreme ends of the ribs 0 opposite the handle, as shown in Fig. 1, constitute in effect teeth, so that a comb is thereby provided whereby the various graining effects may be obtained without the necessity of employing an additional comb.
I claim:
1. In a graining device, the combination, with a rigid body portion, comprising a section of a solid cylindrical body, an operat ing surface thereon formed by the curved surface of the cylinder section, flexible ma terial on said operating surface extending substantially to the edge where the curved surface is interrupted, and a handle projecting from the nonoperating surface of said section at an inclination with a plane through the four corners of. said curved operating surface, substantially as specified.
2. In a graining device, the combination of a rigid body portion, comprising substantially a section of a solid cylindrical body, with an operating curved surface formed by the surface of the cylinder section, flexible material on said operating surface extending substantially to the edge where the curved surface is interrupted; whereby edge portions are formed by the intersections of the non-operating portion with the curved operating surface of said section, and a handle projecting away from said edge portions at an inclination with a plane drawn through the four corners of the said curved operating surface substantially as specified.
clined to the curved operating surface, fiegiible material on said operating surface extending substantially to the edge where the curved surface is interrupted; whereby edge portions are formed by the intersections of the non-operating portion with the curved operating surface of said section, and a handle projecting away from said edge portions at an inclination with a plane drawn through the four corners of the said curved operating surface, substantially as specified.
4:. In a graining tool, the combination of a head comprising a solid segment of a cylinder, an elastic pad secured to said head and coming to an edge at the edge of the arcual surface of the head, and a single handle secured to the head and lying in a circunr ferential plane and having its axis out of the radial planes through the cylinder axis.
5. In a graining tool, the combination With a semi-cylindrical head, a handle socketed in the diametric face of said head. and making an angle other than right angle to the diametric face, and an elastic graining pad secured about the semi-cylindrical surface of the head and coming to an edge where the semicylindrical surface joins the diametric surface.
6. In a graining tool, the combination of a wooden head constituting a segment of a cylinder, a yielding graining pad secured to the curved surface of such head and coming to an abrupt edge at the edge of the arcual surface of the head, said pad having ribs concentric about a point adjacent to one edge of the pad, two sockets in the wooden head at an angle to each other, and a haildle adapted to seat in either of said sockets.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afliX my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
