UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEroE.
MATTHEW W. FLOTO, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DESK-PAD.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW W. FLoTo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk-Pads, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in desk pads and more specifically to a pad of a transparent nature, which is adapted for employment as a holder for the accommodation of papers or sheets frequently or constantly referred to by the user of the pad in order to maintain or hold such sheets in display in convenient proximity to the user.
The object of my invention is the production of a pad of the character mentioned which will be of durable and economic construction and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in a desk pad characterized as above mentioned and `in certain details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim. j
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which` Figure l is a top plan view of a pad embodying the preferred form of my inis an enlarged transversed section taken on line `x of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of a corner portion of a slightly modified form of my invention.
The preferred form of my invention as illustrated in the drawing comprises a preferably rectangular flat body portion l, the same being formed of any durable rigid material, binders board being preferably used. Said body 1 is of any suitable dimensions, and the same although shown and described as rectangular may be of any other peripheral design desired. Secured, preferably by gluing, upon the upper side of the body l at the periphery thereof is a strip 2 also preferably formed of binders board, thereby forming a shallowr recess 3 in the upper side of said body. The strip 2 and the adjacent edge portion of the body l are preferably covered by a strip of suitable covering 4, said covering strip as Specication of yLetters Patent. Application led March 8, 1911.
Patented Sept. 3, 1912. serial No, 513,121.
clearly shown in Fig. 2 embracing the strip 3 and the adjacent portion of said pad and forms a very shallow recess inthe bottom of the pad. The upper and lower sides Lof the body member 1 are also preferably covered by suitable sheets of covering material 5 and 6, the coverings 4, 5` and 6 being of any desired color and formed of any suitable material to add to the ornate appearance of the device. j s
Removably arrangedin the recess 3 is a transparent plate 7 formed preferably of glass although any other suitable transparency such as Celluloid may be used if desired, the former, however, being found more efficient and better suited for the purpose. Said plate 7 isof such dimensions and form as fit snugly in the recess 3. The same being of such thickness that, when arranged in said recess, the upper side thereof will be substantially Hush with the upper side of the covering 4 of the strip 2. In order that the removal of said plate 7 may beefected with ease and expedition, openings or perforations 8 are formed in the body or bottom member'l adjacent the peripheral edge of said plate and, because of the symmetry, preferably medially along the two longitudinal edges of said body member. With this provision, when it is desired to remove the glass, it is only required to raise the edge of the pad or to slide the same so jects over the edge of the desk or surface upon which the pad is arranged, whereupon the finger may be inserted through one of said openings into engagement with the under side of the glass and thereby readily effect elevation of one edge thereof.
In use, the sheet, chart, map, or other paper desired to be in display for ready reference is arranged in the bottom of t-he recess 3 under the plate 7 as shown at 9. When so arranged such paper will obviously be held in a convenient position for inspection, since the same may be viewed through the transparent plate covering the same. By the provision of the bottom or body number l, if it is desired to move the sheets for display as to another section or part of the office, the former may be lifted about or carried as desired, the position of the papers or sheets in the pad remaining unaltered. Also, with a device of the construction as set forth if it is desired to change the sheets of papers arranged therethat the edge thereof prober l, breakage or chipping thereof is prevented, and dustand dirt is prevented from readily entering under the glass. A pad of the construction described in addition to being adapted to eiiiciently serve in the capacity set forth is of neat appearance and when employed adds to the appearance of the desk or other furniture in conjunction in which the same is used. By reason of the hard, fiat, smooth surfaces Which is presented by the plate 7, an excellent service is afforded for Writing and figuring. The shallow recess in the bottom of the pad lessens the extent of contact with the desk and facilitates movement of the pad there- A pad of less cost to manufacture may be made by providing strips 2 only at the corners of the member l, the portionsof the strips intermediate the corners being omiti Copies of this patent may be obtained for ted, as shown in Fig. 3. The strips so provided serve to maintain the plate 7 centrally upon the member 1.

iVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing. from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction as set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A desk pad comprising an unattached bot tom member having a comparatively deep recess in its upper surface and a shallow recess in its lower surface; and a glass plate loosely resting in said upper recess, there being two finger openings provided in said bottom member, one of said finger open ings being positioned adjacent the center of each of the longer sides of said bottom member, substantially as described.
In testimony hereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
