upper linlv's through li -B are shown as positioned \Yllll parallel links as m B-B of Fig.
The operation of the bucket will, it is thought. be obvious from the foregoing description. Assumin that the bucket is closed when the closlng cable is shickcned, the relatively heavy sheave 9 and its con nected )arts drop downwardly and thrust the hue cost-oops apart through the agency or" the arms In descending. the sheave is rotated by the 1(' l 't111l('( afforded by the unwinding ot the chains 10 and simmltnneousl Winds up in nu opposite direction the cable 1? within the peripheral groove of the sheave. In closing the bucket, power is applied through said cable which is of rela tivcly large diameter and exerts sufficient leverage to rotate the sleeve 8 and wind the chains 16 thereon to draw the arms 2 upwardly and thereby close the bucket-scoops together.
It. will be evident that through the employment of chains formed in the manner described that the same will with certainty at all times \vind upon the sleeve in a spiral condition and thus not interfere or unduly thrust more strain upon one chain than others. That through the agency of the equalizers 13 two chains upon each side of.
the sheave 9 are employed and the load upon ouch distributed safely. Similarly, the provision of the yoke 11 further distributes the load :is l'wtwccn the chains upon the opposite sides of the sheave and further increases the factor of safety and strength, by d uc equalization of all strains cncountcre lit; will be noted that when the bucket is in open condition as shown in Fig. 1, that the chains draw directly from the respective axes of the rod 5 and the bar 3, while when the bucket is closed and chains are wound about the sleeve 8 and hence are oil'- set from the bar axis. To compensate for such variation in the direction of strain the strap 12 is mounted for limited swinging movements upon said rod 5 and allows of sutlicicnt motion to accommodate the lateral inclination of the chains and effects the directpull of the chains, e ualizers, yoke and connected parts from sui( bar.
'hat I claim as my invention, is-
1. In a clam-shell bucket, closing devices for the bucket scoops consisting of a crosshead, a yoke pivotally secured centrally of its length to the cross-hcad, equalizers piv otally secured to each of the extremities of said yoke. and a pair of chains secured at one end to each of said equalizers and at their other ends to the bar connecting the forward ends of the bucket scoops and formed to wind spirally about said bar.
52. A. clam-shell bucket having bucketscoops with pivotal connections with :1 bar at their forward ends. a c1'oss-lic:ul.'nn l braces pivotally connccting said cross-howl and the rear end of said scoops, closing dcviccs for said scoops consisting in a sle ve rotatably mounted on said bar, a ll(:t\'( li.\'- cdlv secured to said sleeve. :1 pair of chains upon each side of said sheave formed to wind in opposite spiral directions upon said sleeve and each fixedly secured at one end to said sleeve and at the other end to said. cross-head, devices to equalize the strains between each pair of chains and between the pairs of chains.
