T0 all 'wh-om it may ooncern Be it known that JAMEs SI-rnL'roN, a and a resident of the city of Knoxville, county of Knox, and State of Tennessee, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Boiler- Stud Connections, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvement-S in studs which project from the exterior surface of steam boilers, tanks and the like, by means of which braces, brackets and other parts are secured in position.
The object of my invention is to provide such a construction in a Stud connection with a boiler sheet or tank as to preclude the pos- Sibility of the escape of fluid should a stud be Suddenly yanked out of place, this being` a common occurrence i railway and other accidents.
A further object of niy invent-ion is to provide a stud connection with a boiler Sheet or tank which shall be simple of construction, strong and durable, and eflicient in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which 2- Figure 1 is a section of a boiler or tank sheet embodying my invention in its preferred form, Fig. 2 is a section of a boilei` Sheet showing a modification of my invention, Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing a portion of the interior of a boiler Sheet and a plate employed in the preferred form of my improved stud connection, Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing the plate employed in the modified form of Stud connection, Fig. 5 is a section of a boil`er Sheet showing another modification of my invention, Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation showin a member employed in said last-named modified form, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing the application of the Stud connections to a locomotive boiler.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises a boiler Sheet 1 having a threaded aperture 2 formed therein. The axis of Said `escape freely. In
aperture is disposed transversely of the Sheet so that when a threaded Stud 3' is screwed into said apert-ure that the same will be disposed perpendicularly thereto. The threads 4 of the stud 3 are formed on one end of the latter to a point Suflicient to permitthe threaded end of the stud to become flush with the inside of the Sheet 1 when the stud is inserted. The stud 3 serves as a means for attaching a brace or bracketto the exterior of Vthe Sheet 1 as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
no further means is provided, and should the stud 3 be accidentally wrenched from its normal position in the `sheet,then fluid such as steam contained within theboiler would order to preclude the possibility of the escape of Steam in the manner above suggested and thereby to prevent scalding and other injuries a plate 5 is seoured to the interior of the Sheet 1 So as to cover the threaded end of the stud 3 and the aperture into which the latter is screwed. Said plate is preferably riveted to the sheet 1 by means of a plurality of rivcts 6, there being a corresponding number of registering apert-ures formed in said plate and sheet to receive said rivets. This provision obviously is suiiicientto prevent the escape of steam should the stud 8 be removed by accident or otherwise.` i
In the modified form of stud connection shown in Figs. 2 and L1 a stud 3 is provided as in the preferred form, said stud being provided with threads 11 and screwed into a threaded aperture 2. A plate 7 Substantially co-extensive with the plate 5 of the preferred form is welded to the Sheet 1 So'as to cover the inner end of the aperture into which the latter is inserted. VVhile electric welding is preferred the auto'genous process may be used if desired. Dotted lines 8 in Fig. 2 indicate the line of the weld. A Shallow recess 9 circular in form is preferably formed in the plate 7 so as to provide clearance for the inner end of the stud 3 when screwed in position as illustra-ted in Fig. 2.
In the modified form of Stud connection illnstrated in Figs. 5 and 6 an exteriorly and interiorly threaded member 10 is provided from the center of which projects a square boss 11 designed for the reception of a wrench by means of which the member is readily screwed into the boiler Sheet 1. The

The Stud 12 is threaded at its inner end to fit the threads of the recess 13 and at its outer end to receive a nut 14 by means of which a Supporting member 15 is rigidly held in position. The port-ion of the Supporting member 15 shown in Fig'. 5 may be a part of a brace 16 aS shown in Fig. 7 or a part of abracket 17 also shown in said Fig. 7. In the case of the brace 16 three Studs 12 two Studs 12 the size of the locomotive to which the bracketS are applied determining this factor. A running' board 18 of conventional form is shown supported by the brackets 17 in F ig. 7
Boilers and tanks which are provided with Stud connections as hereinbefore de- Scribed are Safer, Stronger, and more effioient in operation than those in common use.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invent-ion into effect, this is capable of Variation and modification without departing` from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to theprecise details of construction as Set forth, but deSire to avail myself of Such variations and modifications as come within the Scope of the appended claims.
Having Vdescribed my invention what I claim aS new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a device of the Character described the combination with a Sheet, of a. threaded aperture formed in said Sheet, a Stud threaded at one end and screwed into Said Sheet, the end of said Stud opposite the threaded portion thereof projecting` from one Side ofV Said Sheet, and a plate Secured to the other Side of said Sheet with Steam and water tight connection and covering` the threaded end of said Stud, there being a Space formed between the end of Said Stud and the adjacent Surface of Said plate, Substantially as described.
4. In a. device of the character described, the combination with a Sheet, of a. thr'eaded aperture formed in Said Sheet, a Stud threaded at one .end and Screwed into Said Sheet, the end of Said Stud opposite the threaded portion thereof projecting` from one Side of Said Sheet, and a plate rig'idly and intimately Seoured to the other side of SaidV Sheet, adapted to prevent leakage of Steam and water under pressure between said plate and Sheet and covering the threaded end of Said Stud, there being' a Space formed between Said Stud and the adjacent Surface of Said plate, substantially as described.
