LUBRIGATING- DEVICE FOR STEAMHAMMERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1912.
Application filed November 18, 1911. Serial No. 661,033.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX Sormnsorni, a citizen of the United States, residing at Summit, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lubricating Deyices for Steam-Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to means for supplying oil to the steam entering the valve chamber of a steam hammer. Oil cups located in the steam supply pipe near the valve inlet channel are usually employed but are objectionable for the reason that they deliver the lubricant to the steam ata distance from such channel and for the more important reason that the oil cup projects considerably beyond the face of the hammer and is very liable to damage or breakage by impact against adjacent objects when the hammer is lifted, lowered and swung as required in the extremely rough usage to which the hammer is subjected in practice.
The object of my invention is to provide a strong casting firmly attached. to the face of the hammer and capable of withstanding the shocks and blows to which. it is exposed, serving to receive the steam supply pipe and protect the latter and its valve, and containing a chamber arranged to deliver lubricant to the steam immediately before its entrance to the valve chamber, thus avoiding the above objections.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement by which the above objects are attained to be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show the invention as it has been carried out in practice.
Figure 1 is a face view or front eleva tion of a pile hammer equipped with the improved oilcr. Fig. 2 is a corresponding side view. The succeeding figures are on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a face view of the lubricating device alone. Fig. 4 is a corresponding top view. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on the line 55 in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sect-ion taken on the broken line 6-6 in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a corresponding horizontal sectionon the line 7-4 in Fig. 3, showing a portion of the hammer body.
of the ram draws Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
A is the body of the hammer having a suspending loop A 'by which it is suspended and placed in position, and a cylinder and ram, not shown, which with other portions of the mechanism. may be understood to be of any ordinary or approved type. On the face of the hammer is a raised portion or boss of large area on which is mounted a flanged casting B connected to the steam inletchannel a, and a flanged collar C servmg as an exhaust connection leading from an exhaust channel not shown, to the exhaust pipe C The casting B comprises a plate extended as a flange B carrying a cored casing or boss B in the lower portion of which is apassage 6 leading from the downwardly presented inlet opening Z1 to the channel a. In the upper portion of the casing, above the passage 6, is a chamber 5 having an orifice b at the top, closed by a screw-plug D. A small hole or passage affords communication from the interior of the chamber to the steam passage-b at a point near the junction of the latter with the channel a.-
The casting is strongly bolted to the body of the hammer with the passage 6 presented to the channel a as shown in Fig. 7. Pieces of felt E or the like are introduced into the chamber through the chamber partially and the latter is then supplied with oil and the screw-plug D replaced. The volume of steam rushing through the passage 6 at each reciprocation a small quantity of oil through the oil passage 6 which is carried along by the steam and serves to lubricate the valve and other portions of the mechanism. The oil passage 6' is produced by inserting a smalldrill through'the opening I) and inclining it to the angle permitted by such opening, thus prodncing'an orifice of small diameter having an angular inclination in the direction of the steam current flowing through the passage b so that the current tends by suction to draw the oil from the chamber 12 The felt -E or other absorbent filling serves to restrain the flow of lubricant and permits a small quantity only to escape at each impulse or rush of the steam current.
ed to the hammer body and is there The casting B is strong and securely fasten v ore we1l 110 I the opening 5 to fill air or adapted to? withstand rough usage; and by locating the'steam inlet opening 6 in the lower portion thereof with the opening directed downwardly, it permits the steam connection to be made close to and parallel with the face of the hammer, and as a consequence of such location and positionj also serves as a its controlling valve.
Although inthis description steam is set fortlh, a casting comprising in a single intera b element an oil reservoir, a steam passage, an inclined passage from the bottom of said reservoir to the steam passage, and a lateral extension of said steam passage for communication with the steam inlet channel of the body of a hammer to which said casting is attached;
2. In a steam hammer of the character set forth, a casting comprising in a single inte-.-
gral element an oil reservgir, a steam passage, an inclined passage at its bottom afprotection for the steam pipe and sage in its lower channel from an in fording communication between said oil reservoir and thejsteam passage, and a lateral extension of the said steam passage for communication with the steam inlet channel of the body of a hammer, said reservoir having a filling opening permitting the insertion of means for forming said inclined passage.
3. In a steam hammer of the character set :forth, a body portion having a steam channeltherein, a castmg secured to said body on the face thereof and having a steam pasortion leading to said et on the under face of said casting, and an oil chamber in the upper portion of said casting, and an oil passage leading from said chamber to said steam passage and communicating with the ,latter at a polnt intermediate its ends at an inclination in' the direction of the current of :steam flowing through said steam passage whereby the volume of steam passing through said steam passage serves by suction to withdraw the oil from the oil chamber through said, inclinedoil passage.
In testimony that I claim the invention above set forth I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
