Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led December V5, 1914. Serial No. 875,659.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY ROBINETT and CHARLES W. CooY, citizens of the United States, residing at Long Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Vent-Pipe Protector, of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a vent pipe litting or protector to be attached to the upper end of a vent pipe or to any other suitable and necessary part thereof, and so constructed as to exclude objects from said pipe but allow a free upward or downward passage of air and gas.
Another object is to check or eliminate back draft in vent pipes.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the protector; Fig.2 is a vertical, longitudinal, sectional view taken on a plane of line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the protector; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on a plane of line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view showing a modified form of guard meniber.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals: l designates as an entirety the casting forming the fitting or protector. The casting comprises a preferably cylindrical body or barrel 2 having a passage 3 extending entirely therethrough. The barrel may be of any suitable length and diameter and is integrally connected on one side adjacent its lower end to an offset portion or elbow 4 having its upper side extending aslant upward toward the barrel to form a deflecting surface, said elbow being of an enlarged diameter adjacent its lower end to form a socket or chamber. 5 which receives the vent pipe 6. It will be .understood that the elbow may also be made of any desired size and thatl the pocket or chamber 5 may be variedvin size to meet any requirement. Within the elbow, and extending entirely thereacross at the juncture of the elbow with the barrel is a guard or lug 7 which projects upwardly into the elbow and which has its outer face -S. inclined downwardly and outwardly. This guard Patented Dec.. 28, MM5.
which appears substantially triangular in cross section makes it impossible for an object to be thrust into the vent pipe through the top of the barrel and the inclined face 8 slopes upward toward the deflecting surface of the elbow 4 so that ai r blowing into the lower end of the barrel will be deflected up- I ward against the deiiecting surface of the elbow and will then be deflected upward and outward by said deilecting surface, thus insuring against pipe.
down draft in the vent The barrel is formed in one side adjacent its lower end with an opening 9 to establish communication with the passage 10 of the elbow. wardly from the barrel wardly below clearly shown.
This elbow extends outand then down the bottom of the barrel as As a further guard means for the fitting we provide the cross bars l1 and l2 which extend acr oss the interior of the barrel 2 near the upper and lower ends respectively.
These bars are suilicient to prevent any one reaching into the fitting and dropping objects into the vent pipe.
larger fittings such as ill In ustrated in Fig. 5,
we find it advantageous to employ in place of the single cross bars,
such as illustrated in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the cross construction 13 shown.
14 is a set screw to secure the fitting to the vent pipe 6. It will of stood that any other means tting 1n position may be While we have shown preferred embodiment of to be understood that we course be underfor securing the employed.
and described the our invention, it is do not wish to be limited to this exact construction, but may make such changes in design, proportion and arrangement of parts time to time,
as may occur from and as will come within the scope and spirit of the invention as claimed.
ter described comvertical barrel having an opening an elbow formed adjacent its lower with the interior thereof, said elbow extending outwardly and downwardly from its poi the barrel and having its nt of contact with upper side extending aslant upward toward the barrel to set our hands at Los Angeles, California, form a delecting surface, and a guard this 27th day of November, 1914. Y formed within the elbow7 said guard having HENRY ROBINETT. its outer face inclined downwardly toward CHARLES W. CODY. 5 the loa-Ireland sloping upwardly toward the .In p resenoeof y f Y deflectng surfaeeof the elbow. V[,ionA,M."B ovv'imsQ.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto ANNA F. SCHMIDTBAUER.
