This invention relates to well construction, and aims to provide a well casing of a construction which will absolutely exclude surn face water or water' passing through earth .5 formation that renders the water impure or objectionable for drinking purposes.
An important object of the invention 1s to provide sealing means at both the upper and lower ends of the well casing sealing the space between the Well casing and wall of the well.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a casing section having an outv wardly flared flange to engage the wall of the well and seal the well vragainst water entering the well from upper levels.
With the foregoing and other objects'in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts; and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing in detaihthe well casing embodies Va plurality of pipe sections 5, which are connected by the collars 6, the number of pipe sections being governed by the depth of the well.
Disposed near the upper end of the well casing are spaced packing rings 8, whilepacking rings 9 are arranged near the lower end thereof, guarding the ends of the space bej tween the well and well casing, against for- .g5 eign matter entering the space. The lower end of the pipe section at the base of the casing, supports the shoe 11 which has a flared lower end 12 that fits against the vr55 wall of the well in which the casing is positioned. p Y
I An annular groove is formed eXteriorly of the shoe 11, and issodisposed that it supports the copper sealing ring 13 in an in- 60 n Y clined position, the rfree edge of the sealing ring contacting with the wall of the well, at a point inline with the lower edge of the shoe 11.
In the form of the invention as shown by Figure 3 ofthe drawing, the lower pipe section of the well casing, indicated at 14, is supplied Vwith a flared metallic fiange 15, the same being secured to the w-ell casing in any suitable and well known manner.
This iange 15 is so located on the well casking, that it will lie in a position adjacent to the clay or hard pan level, sealing the lower end of the well casing against water passing to the bottom of the well, through this earth formation. This flange 15 provides a seat for the sealing material 16, which is poured into the space between the well and well casing, after the well casing and sealing ring have been positioned, and an enlargement in `80 the wall of the well has been made for the reception of the sealing material.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, all, surfacewater as well as the water passing through mineral earth formations, will be excluded from thefresh water at'the bottom of the well. Y
Having thus described the invention, If claim: v
1. A sealing device for sealing the space between a well casing and the wall of the well in which the casing is positioned, comprising a shoe secured to the lower end of,Ayr
' the casing, the lower end of the shoe being'95 iared outwardly contacting with the wall of the Well, saidA shoe having an annular groove formed therein, a sealing ring fitted in the groove and flared outwardly from the shoe, to contact with the wall of thewell, sealing the casing against water passing between the easing and wall of the well.
2. A sealing,- device for sealing the space between a well casing and the wall of the well in which the easing is positioned comprising a slnoe secured to the lower end of the Casing7 the lower end of the shoe being flared outwardly Contacting with the wall of the well7 an outwardly and upwardly rflared member mounted on the shoe at a point above the lower end 0f the shoe, contacting with the wall of the well, and Said outwardly flared end of the shoe, sealing the easing against water passing downwardly or upwardly between the shoe and wall of the well.
