a citizen of the United States, residing at.
Canton, in the county of- Stark and State-f Ohio, have invented a newand useful Railway li'e of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in railway ties and has specific reference to the devices employed in securely holding the railway rails upon the ties. v
The objects of my invention, are, first, to provide a railway tie constructed ofany suitable material for the purpose designed, and second, to provide means for securely locking and holding the railway rails in proper;rel.ative positions with reference to the tie.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accom anying drawings,
although the inventive i ea involved is; capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which I have chosen to illustrate the invention. In the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification: Figure l is a perspective view showing one set of the rail locking devices removed. Fig; 2 is a longitudinal section of the tie showing one of the railway rails locked and the locking device of the opposite rail removed, said figure being on line 22, 3, except the locking devices are not shown in section. In the accompanyin drawing, 1 repre sents the railway tie w ich may be formed of any suitable material for railway purposes. The railway-tie 1.is provided with recesses or chambers 2, the outer ends of said recesses being provided With the 'en-' larged portions 3, which enlarged portions the same relative posi- I are for the purposes hereinafter described.
Between the recesses or chambers '2 are located the integral rail supports 4-, which supports are formed of a width to correspond substantially with the width of the bottoms or-bases of the railway rails llVithin the chambers or recesses 2 are normally located the rail looking or clamping dogs 6, which clamping dogs are provided with the lateral lugs .7, which lugs are for the purpose of preventing any bodily up- 'ward movement of the locking (logs. lugs 7 are seated or located in the grooves S, which areformed in the side walls of the chambers or recesses 2 as best illustrated in Fig. 4.
It will. be understood that in order to provide room for enteringthe dogs 6 in the recesses 2, said recesses must necessarily be provided with the enlarged portions 3,
.which permit the entrance of the lugs 7, the locking dogs 6 are provided with suit-- able apertures 9, through which apertures are located the dogdocking levers 10. 'lVhen it is desired to secure the railway rails in g proper position upon the ties the looking I levers 10 are lifted or brought into the posit-ion illustrated in the dotted lines Fig. 5 and when in that position the dogs are moved bodily toward the railway rails until the clamping ends of the dogs 6 are brought over and upon'the upper faces of the base flanges of the railway rails, after which, the
locking levers 10 are brought into "the position shown in full lines Fig. 5, and when A said levers are brought into the' position shown in full lines, ,the locking levers will lift the ends of the locking dogs .upward and away from the bottoms of the recesses 2, thereby forcing the overlapped or opposite ends of the-dogs downand upon the upper faces of the flanges of the railway rails.
The dog 6 rocks upon'the downward extended portions 11 rest-ingupon the bottoms 1 of the recesses 2. For the purpose of liftingthe ends of thedogs' 6 to which the locking levels 10 are connected, said locking levers are provided with the shoulders 12, which shoulders come against-the bottoms of the locking dogs or more specifically said shoulders are seated in the shallow grooves 13. For the purpose 'of-preventing any accidental displacement of the locking dogs 6 after they have been brought into position to securely hold the railway rails the blocks l l are'provided which blocks are placed in the enlarged ortions 3 of therecesses or chambers 2. t will be understood that the blocks 14 should be placed in proper position with reference to the railway ties prior to the time the locking levers 10 are brought I into position to bind and hold the railway rails. This is necessary owing to the fact that after the locking levers 10. have been brought into the position shown in full lines Fig. 5 their upper ends or portions will interfere with the placing of the blocks 14.
' For the purpose of providing means for removing the blocks 14, said blocks are provided with the lifting knobs 15', which knobs may be of any desired construction, but should be so formed that they will not interfere with the movements of the locking levers 10. v
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In con1binat1on,a tie provided with re cesses spaced from each other, the side walls of the recesses provided with grooves, rail clamping dogs provided with: lateral lugs, said lateral lugs adapted to be seated in the grooves of the recesses, locking levers pivotally connected to the rail clamping dogs,
said locking levers provided with shoulders adapted for contact with the rail locking dog.
- 2. In combination, a tie provided w1th re-' cesses, rail supports located intermediate the recesses, said recessesprovided with enlarged portions at their outer ends, rail clamping dogs provided with downward extended portions adapted for contact with the bottoms of the recesses, locking levers pivotally connected to said rail clamping dogs, said locking levers adapted to rock the clamping do s.
3 In combination, a tie provided with recesses, rail supports located intermediate the recesses, said recesses. provided with enlarged portions at their outer endsyi-ail clamping dogs provided with downward extended portions, adapted for contact with the bottom of the recesses, locking levers pivotall connected to said rail clamping dogs, said locking levers adapted to rock the clamping dogs, and the locking dogs provided with lateral lugs and grooves formed.
