`Another object of my invention is to proi vide a device which will obviate the necessity of using the ordinary fish-plate and bolts in joining rails, and one which is strong, durable and efficient in practice.
`With the above and `other objects in view which will appear as `the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina-` tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be Vmade without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention the numeral 6, designates a cross tie, U-shaped in cross section, inthe present instance and similar to the cross tie disclosed in my Patent No. 905,285. Secured to the bottom ofthe tie, adjacent each end thereof, is a relatively wide supporting plate 7, having a pair of opposite ends extended a substantial distance beyond the longitudinal sides of the Specification of Letters Patent.

A rectangular support 8 `is secured within the U-shaped tie by means of transversebolts 9, above each plate 7, and one of these supports is also secured intermediate the ends of the tie. To form a brace for each support 8, a transversely extending web 10l is secured within the up per portion of each support andthe upper edge of each web is provided with a slot 11 for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.

pairs of upwardly extending oppositely disposed lugs 14 are provided by cutting transversely of the plate at spaced intervals and by bendingup the portions `defined by the cuts. These upstanding lugs 14 are adapted to` extend through the slots 15 provided in the edges of the side flange 16 of the rails 17 Due to thisconstruction, the transverse movement of the rails upon their respective base plate 12 isprevented. l
A. bar 18 extends longitudinally of the cross tie through the slots`11 of the webs 10, and is movable longitudinally therethrough for a purpose which will presently appear. The plate 19 is secured to the top of one end of the bar 18, as` clearly shown in Fig. 3, and extends longitudinally of thebuar and transversely beneath the top of one of the end supports 8. At the point where this plate reaches the end of the bar 18, it is eX- tended upwardly a substantial distance as at 20, then inclined inwardlyof the bar as at 21 whereby the terminal of portion 21 engages at the juncture of the rail web and the tread portion of the rail. Consequently, the upstanding portion 2O ofthis plate engages with a portion of the longitudinal edges of both the base plate 12 and the outside flange 15 of the rail. As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, theedges of the portion 21l diverge upwardly to the rail and provide a broad engaging edge therefor. To brace the inner longitudinal edges of the face plate 12 and the rail flange 15, a sleeve 22 is slidably mounted upon the har 18. This sleeve is equipped with a rail engaging member 23, and its construction and function is identical with the portions 21 and 20 of the plate 19.
The upstanding portion 2a of the rail engaging member' 23 engages with the relative inner longitudinal edges ot the base plate and the inner rail flange while the terminal of this member engages the rail at the juncture of'its tread portion and web'. rfhe sleeve 22 is retained in such position whereby its rail engaging member 23 is inthe proper position,

V.The other rails are retained upon the opposite end ot the tie the same as its co-acting rails, withthe exception that instead ot a plate 19,being secured to the opposite end ot the 'bar 18, a sleeve 27 is slidably mounted upon the bar whereby its portion 21 engages with therelativeoutsidel of the rails. - AConsequently,when it is desired to remove theV rails from the tie, the shackle ot the padlock is removed from its opening in the barr18 so Vthat'sleeve 27 may be moved upon the bar 18 outwardly ot therail. 2. ln a cross tie, supports carried thereby, a movable bar extending longitudinally ol.l the tie and transversely through said supports, a plate on eaeh support, rails mounted upon said plates means for preventing longitudinal movement ot said rails placed upon said support, and rail engaging members carried by said bar and engaging the longitudinal edges ot said rail flanges and plates tor preventing transverse movement ot the rails upon the support.
In a cross tie, supports arried thereby` a movable bar extending longitudinally ol: the tie and transversely through said supports, a plate on each support, rails mounted upon said plates, means tor preventing longitudinal movement of said rails and placed upon said supports movable sleeves on said bar, a rail engaging member secured to each sleeve and engaging the longitudinal edges ot said rails and plates, a plate secured to the top of said bar adjacent the end thereot beneath a co-acting sleeve, the end ot said plate being extended to engage a rail and the Y longitudinal edges ot said rails and plates to prevent transverse movement oi Said rails and said lirst named plates upon the support.
In a cross tie, a base plate on each end of said tie, rails mounted upon said plates, means for preventing longitudinal movement ot said rails placed upon said tie, a bar extending longitudinally ot the tie, means thereon vfor preventing transverse movement ot' said hase plates and rails upon said tie, and a rail engaging member rigidly secured to said bar to engage the rails and the longitudinal edges ot said rail llanges and plates to prevent transverse movement ot said rails and first named plates upon the tie.
