SHOE-BLOCK LEVELER.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. I-IAUPEN- TI-IAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe- Block Levelers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in shoe block levelers, and it has for its object to scrape off and level cutting blocks in shoe factories, working in comloination with an arm of a cutting or block machine.
With this object in View, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and. arrangement of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a perspective view of an arm of a block machine with my device attached. Fig. 2 is a perspective fragmentary view of a block machine with my device applied. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the underside of my device, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a block machine with my device applied to the same.
The same reference characters denote like parts in each of the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a blade A perforated in two or more places a and a, with counter sunk holes having on the underside of the said blade cutting lines or surfaces, diagonally facing each side or edge of said plate as shown in Fig. 3, so as to out both ways as the arm B is caused to move back and forth over the surface of the block. The blade A is secured by bolts Z) and b to the arm B which turns upon the standard C. The blade A bolted to arm B contacts with the surface of the block D as the arm B is lowered on the standard C, and as the arm B is turned on the standard C, the plate A thus cuts and smooths the surface of the block.
In operation I raise the arm B and bolt the plate A to the arm B with the cutting surface with its diagonal lines facing down ward toward the block. The blade A is fastened diagonally across the under face or side of the arm B with the diagonal faced edges on the under side of the blade A, next to the face of the block. The pressure of the blade on the block is regulated by the hand wheel E on the top of the standard C. Thus with the weight of the arm for pressure, I turn the arm back and forth, the blade cutting and smoothing the surface of the block.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and for which I desire Letters Patent, is as follows: I
1. In a shoe block leveler, the combination with a standard, an arm carried thereby, and a block beneath the arm, of a cutting blade secured to the underface of the arm at each end thereof and extending diagonally across the entire length of the arm.
2. In a shoe block leveler, the combination with a standard, a rectangular-shaped arm carried thereby, and a block beneath the arm, of a cutting blade secured at each end to the under-face of the arm, and extending diagonally across the entire length of the arm.
3. In a shoe block leveler, the combination with a reciprocating standard, of an adjustable and reciprocating arm connected directly thereto, and at right angles to the standard, and a blade removably secured. to the arm upon the undersurface thereof and extending diagonally thereacrcss for the entire length of the arm, said blade having its underside provided with a plurality of diagonally extending parallel cutting members formed integral therewith, said members converging inwardly from the sides of the blade and having their series of apiees disposed along a line passing centrally along the length of the blade.
