To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT G. COLLINS, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Screws, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
This invention relates to an improvement in box screws, and has for its object the formation of a separate thumb piece which is adapted to be secured to the screw, and by which the screw may be turned. At the same time, the screw is so formed that it may be driven into a box or other article by a hammer or other means without injury to the thumb piece.
The invention consists in the production of such a screw and such other improvements and combinations of parts as are set forth and claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a box screw embodying the invention, Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section through the screw, the riveting pin being shown in full and with only one end of the rivet pin headed down, Fig. 3, an inside View of one of the thumb pieces, and Fig. 4, a view in detail of the shank of the screw.
In all figures, similar letters of reference represent like parts.
Referring to the drawings, the part des' ignated by the letter A represents the shank of a screw, one end of which is threaded for use in a box or similar article. Near the 0pposite end the shank is flattened, as shown more particularly in Figs. 2 and 4, at C, and is provided with a transverse perforation D through the flattened portion.
Two plates E similar in form are struck up out of sheet metal with their edges F turned inward, and are provided with corresponding perforations G. At the middle of the upper and lower inturned edges of the plates E are substantially semi-circular grooves H and I, so that when the plates are placed approximately parallel to each other on opposite sides of the shank A, extending laterally from said shank, the latter will fit within the grooves H and I, and the perforations G will be in line with the perforation D in the shank. A rivet X is inserted through the perforations Cr and D, and its outer end may be headed down so as to hold the parts together. hen thus assembled the shank may be turned by the hand of the operator by gripping the plates E, but if it is desired to drive the screw into place by the blows of a hammer the upper projecting end WV of the shank may be struck by the hammer without injury to the plates E.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A box screw, consisting of a shank, and approximately parallel laterally extending plates secured on opposite sides of said shank to form a thumb piece, substantially as described.
2. A box screw, consisting of a shank, and a plurality of plates secured thereto, the upper end of the shank projecting above said plates, substantially as described.
3. A box screw, consisting of a shank and a plurality of plates with inturned edges secured on opposite sides of said shank by a rivet through said shank, substantially as described.
4. A box screw, consisting of a shank, and a plurality of plates with inturned edges secured to said shank, and having semi-circular grooves in their upper and lower edges, said shank fitting in said grooves, substantially as described.
5. A box screw, comprising a shank, and separate laterally ext-ending thumb-piece plates secured on opposite sides of said shank, approximately parallel to each other and below the head of the shank; substantially as described.
