Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. THoMr-` soN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved HotelfRegister, of which the following lis a full, clear, and eX- act description.
The invention relates to hotel registers in which a traveling web is used for receiving the names of the guests and other data.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved hotel register, to facilitate the registering of the arriving guests on a web, and for which use is made of a motor l for imparting a traveling motion to the web in either direction, to display a blank spaee for proper registering of new arrivals vvithout disclosing the names of the already registered guests, provision being also made for the calling of bell boys and for sounding alarms at any predetermined time, so that the hotel clerk can awaken early departing guests.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a casing having a display opening for the passage of the web passing over a bedplate and winding on rollers arranged within the casing, a motor located in the casing, and a specially constructed gearing driven by the said motor and adapted to be moved into driving engagement with either roller, to impart a traveling motion to the weby in either direction.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawT ings forming a part of this specification, in
which similar characters of reference indie cate corresponding parts in all the views,

The casing A. of the liotel register is preferably made .cylindrical and provided `with pvot A? engaging a base B adapted to rest on a double disk or other support, so that the casing A can be con: veniently turned around in either direction. The top of the ,casing A is provided with a display opening A3, under which extends a bedfplate or atable A, over which passes the web. C of paper or other material and properly ruled for receivingthe names of the guests, their respective time of arrival, the room number and similar data, the table opening A3 being properly rheaded at its upper end by such legends, as indicated in Fig, `The web C passes through slots in the bed-plate LA* and then winds on rollers D and D, journaled in suitable bearings ar..- ranged .on the casing A, and the said rollers are provided with friction wheels D2, D3, engaged by iixed brakes E, E attached to the casing A, to prevent the rollers D and D from unwinding too fast, so as to keep the web C at all times stretched in taut .condition over the bed-.plate At.
The friction wheels D2., D3 of the rollers D and D are adapted to be engaged by friction Wheels F, F secured on the ends of a shaft F 2, jonrnaled suitable bearings arranged on a swing frame G, mounted to swing loosely .on a worm shaft H, journaled in suitable bearings arranged on the easing A. The worm shaft H is provided with `a worm H in mesh with a worm wheel F-3 secured on the shaft F?, so that when the shaft H is turned a rotary motion isgiven to the .Shaft F2 and by vthe corresponding wheel F, F 1to `the wheel D? or D3., to rotate the roller D or D according to whichever wheel F or F contents at the time with the corresponding wheel D2 or D3. an angular arm G having a slot G2 engaged by the crank pin J of a crank disk J, mounted to rotate in suitable bearings A5 arranged on the casing A (see Figsv and 6), and the said crank disk J is provided with an upwardly-extending central pin J2 of polygonal shape, for engagement by a key inserted through an opening A6 in the top of the casing A. This key is under the control of the hotel clerk or other authorized person. When the key is used for turning the disk J `then the pin J thereof imparts a swinging motion to the frame G in either direction according to the direction in which the key is turned, and thence either wheel F or F ycan be moved in rictional contact with the wheel D2 or D3, to rotate The electric motor is also controlled bylthe movement given by the key to the crank disk J and swing frame G, to start and stop the motor and to run the same at a high or low vrate of speed, and for this purpose the following'arrangement is made:
In the upper face of the base B are arranged two yconcentric insulated contact rings K, K, provided with depending binding posts K2, K3 connected with the main line wires K2, K5 leading to a suitable source of electricity. The contact lrings K, K are engaged at the Lipper faces by spring-pressed contact pins L, L. (see Fig. 3), held insulated on the base plate A, and connected with circuit wires L2, L3 containing a resistance coil N and connected with the motor I (see Fig. 6).
The circuit wires L2, L3 are connected with fixed contacts O, O of an electric switch, having a third member O2 secured on the arm G of the swing frame G so as to move with the latter and engage either xed contact O, O according to the direction the frame G is swung at the time by the operator turning the crank disk J, as above explained. When the moving contact O2 engages either the fixed contact O or O the circuit is closed and the motor I is driven at a low rate of speed owing to the resistance coil N.
If desired, the resistance coil N can be cut out to run the motor under the full force of the electrical energy and hence at a higher rate of speed, and for this purpose the following arrangement is made: Wires l?, P for a second circuit connect with the first circuit wires L2, L3, but cut-ting out the resistance coil N, and the wires P, P connect with the fixed spring contacts Q, Q', mounted on the casing A at opposite sides of the crank disk J, and the said ixed contacts Q, Q are adapted to be engaged by contact closing levers Q2, Q3, for closing thel contacts Q, Q and hence the direct motor circuit, to run the motor at a high rate of speed. The cont-act-closing levers Q2, Q3
are fulcrumed on the casing A and are adapted to be engaged by the crank pin J of the ycrank disk J, when the latter is turned farther than required for running the motor under slow speed, as above described.
The swing frame G is heldin a central or dormant position by a spring-pressed stop pin R, held on the guide R for the free end of the arm G', the said pin R being adapted to engage the slot G2, but when the arm G is swung to either side the pin R is disengaged from the slot G2.
The casing A is provided at the upper end with a clock S, of any approved construction, and ianked by inkstands T, and the lower end of the casing is provided with a' clock U, normally covered up by a removable cover U, and arranged to sound an alarm at a predetermined time to remind the hotel clerk to wake up a guest at a desired time.
The clock U is provided with a dial U2 having apertures U3 arranged in a circle for the reception of a peg U4 adapted to be engaged by the hour hand U5, to close a circuit for an electric alarm UG mounted in the casing and connected with a battery V.
In the left-hand side of the casing A is mounted an electric call bell W, connected with the battery V and having a switch W in the form of two spaced insulated contact plates projecting below an aperture A7 formed in the top of the casing, so that a metallic instrument such as a key used on l the pin J2 may be insulated to engage the contact plates and thus close the circuit to ring the call bell WV.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A hotel register, comprising a casing having a display opening and a bed-plate, rollers journaled in the casing, a .web winding on the said rollers and extending over the said bed-plate and exposed in the said display opening, driving means arranged in the casing, a gearing driven by the said means, manually-controlled means for stopping and starting the said means and for throwing the said gearing into driving engagementwith either roller for imparting a traveling motion to the said web in either direction and means whereby to. control the speed of movement of said web by the movement of said manually controlled means.
2. A hotel register, comprising a casing having a display opening and a bed-plate, rollers journaled in the casing, a web winding on the said rollers and extending over the said bed-plate and exposed in the said display opening, driving means arranged in the casing, a gearing driven by the said means and mounted on a swing frame for throwing the gearing into driving engage- .ment with either roller, a switch for stopping and starting the said driving means i and having its controlling member moving with the said swing frame, manually-controlled means for imparting a swinging inotion to the said swing frame in order to actuate said controlling member, and means whereby to increase the speed of movement of said driving means, including controlling elements adapted for actuation, by the continued movement of said swing frame beyond that required to actuate said controliing member.
3. A hotel' register, comprising a station'- ary base, a casing mounted to turn on the said base and having a bed-plate and a display opening in its top, rollers journaled in the casing, a web winding on the said rollers and passing over the said bed-plate and through the said display opening, driving means mounted in the said casing, a gearing driven from the said means, a swing frame mounted in the casing and carrying the said gearing to throw the latter into driving engagement with either roller, manually-controlled means for imparting motion to the said swing frame, means actuated by the movement of said swing iframe, to automatically start and stop the said driving means, and means also actuated by t-he movement of the swing frame to vary the speed of said driving means.
4. A hotel register, comprising a stationary base, a casing lmounted to turn on the said base and having a bed-plate and a display opening in its top, rollers journaled in the casing, a web winding on the said rollers and passing over the said bed-plate and thro-ugh the said display opening, driving means mounted in the said casing, a gearing driven from the said means, a swing frame mounted in the casing and carrying the said gearing to throw the latter into driving engagement with either roller, manually-controlled means for imparting motion to the said swing frame, and means to start and stop the driving means by the movement of the swing frame, embodying members arranged upon opposite sides of a portion of the said frame, and a'member carried by the frame to engage with and disengage from either of said first named members.
5. A hotel register, comprising a stationary base, a casing mounted to turn on the said base and having a bed plate and a display opening in its top, rollers journaled in the casing, a web winding on the said rollers and passing over the said bed plate and through the said display opening, driving means mounted in the said casing, a gearing driven from the said means, a swing frame mounted in t-he casing and carrying the said gearing to throw the latter into driving engagement with either roller, the said swing frame having a slotted arm, a manually controlled crank disk mounted on the said casing and having its crank pin extending through the slot of said arm, means to start and stop the driving means by the movement of the swing frame, embodying members arranged upon opposite sides of a portion of the said frame, and a member carried by the frame to engage with and disengage from either of said first-named members, and means whereby to control the speed of movement of the driving means, including members pivoted upon opposite sides of the said swing frame, and having their inner contiguous ends in the path of movement of the said crank pin.
