SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,137, dated September 29, 1903. I
' Application filed March 30, 1900. Serial No. 10,864. (No model-l To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK ALONZO HUMPIDGE, a citizen of Canada, residing at Dutton, in the county of Elgin, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and usefulImprovementinlVIusic-Demonstrators, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to simplifyinginstruction in music. In said invention is a cylinder-case containing a spring-motor to operate different parts and atrain of gearing to slow the uncoil of the spring of said spring-motor.
Sheets of prepared music the length, neither more nor less, to circle said cylinder-case, said sheets having their measures of equal length, are placed arou nd the cylinder'case, a difierent sheet being required for each musical selection and upon said sheets are time characters, placed their respective time distance apart in said measures. Two sets of indicators,
one set set stationary, the other set movable,
are so placed that in one position the movable indicators pass music characters which are in a stationary position, and by simply turning the device upside, down the power is diverted from the moving indicators to the cylinder-case, thus causing the cylinder to revolve and the music characters thereon to pass the stationary indicators. A number of time-heaters are also operated.
The object of my invention is to convey to the sight the time length of a music-measure and the compared duration of music time characters in said measure and when they are to be performed and also to convey to the ear the time by a number of time-boaters operated by mechanism, thus saving a teacher much trouble. I attain these objects by the mechanism and the prepared music-sheets illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which a Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 are sections of the mechanism drawn double their size with cylinder-case removed. Fig. 4: represents device as reversed from the posi- 4 tion shown in Fig. 1.

The plates A G D H are secured in cylinder-case A at a proper distance apart to allow free action of mechanism. Said cylinder-case A is of sufficient length at opposite swing outer end of beater-arms in.

The out side end of coil-spring A is secured to one of the frame-plates, the inside end to shaft B, which is provided with crank Z and pinion C,- said pinion 0 having a ratchet and dog to allow for winding, as in the ordinary clock. Said pinion G engages pinion D, which revolves shaft E, on which is secured pinion F, which engages pinion H, which revolves shaft G, on which is mounted pulley L, which drives belt F around pulley L which carries indicators D, which are secured to said belt F, past the stationary music characters on musicsheet B On the said shaft G is mounted disk K, having pins to set vertically in a true circle from the center of the disk through it at equal distances apart to operate beater-arms h 0 J by contacting with lever-arms'l 2 3 4 5 6. The pins w thus force lever-arms out and Springs t 0 n swing the beater-arms outward to beat the inside of cylinder-case or anything placed for them to strike, all of which beater mechanism is hereinafter described. This is the action when demonstrator is resting on end of cylinder-case A and standard E. In this position the power is applied to shaft B.
When the action is reversed by turning the invention upside down for the purpose of revolving the cylinder-case A with the prepared sheet secnred thereon past the stationary indicators B, the cylinder-case A,

H. Cylinder-case A also carries lever-arms l 2 3 4 5 6 around disk K, contacting pins 00, causing the same action and result as hereinbefore mentioned. The construction and adjustment is hereinafter described. Shaft 8 and pinions M and N are also carried together around pinion I in a planetary movement. Pinion N engages pinion m, which revolves shaft 7, on which is'pinion P, which engages pinion 0 which revolves shaft S. A governor constructed of weights T T is sup ported by levers V V; but when the invention is reversed to the position of Fig. 1 the weights T T are supported by hangers W W. The hangers W W pass through the ends of the cross-bar of shaft S and support weights T T by being looped around gudgeons on both sides of each governor-weight. Levers V V pass through an opening in center of weights T T. When sufiicient speed is applied, the weights separate, forcing the ends of levers V V against friction-plate Y to govern the speed. The rod X is threaded through tinger-ratchet b for the purpose of moving the plate Y to adjust the speed. The farther away plate Y is set from ends'of lever V V the greater the speed. The construction, adjusting, and setting of the time-beating is as follows: each of the posts f, R, and g has one beater-arm and one spring. Post f has two lever-arms, post It has one lever-arm, and post 9 has three-lever-arms. All said leverarms and all said beater-arms and all said springs are secured at one end of each of them to their respective posts, which posts are free to turn and allow the arms to swing. The said arms are adjusted to beat the required number of beats to each measure at the proper time in unison with the music characters and indicators. Either or all of the beater-arms are thrown out of action by the small projections on posts a a Q, (which projections y y y are opposite each of the lever arms,) being turned against beater-arms, forcing the beater-arms inward and lever-arms back from the circle of pins to, preventing them from contacting with each other. The said posts 6, u, and Q are turned by finger-ratchets a, c, and (1. Post e is also used for stopping the mechanism by turning the projection 71; against the cogs of pinion F. The loose pulley L is revolved on reduced end of standard E. Said standard supports one end of that frame-bar of which the other end is supported by the cylinder A, said bar having support-hooks on both sides to hold music sheets B The other end of this frame-bar is supported by cylinder A, as aforesaid, and is held in position by pins secured in framebar and fitted to holes in plate A This attachment can be removed when cylinder-case A is being revolved, its use being to carry belt F and hold musicsheets. The exercises and music are accurately made, each measure being exactly the same length on each sheet and as many lineal measures as there are pinsx in disk K. A sufficient number of music time characters to complete a measure are placed in their respective time distance apart, the first being placed at the left-hand end of each measure close to the bar. Provision has also been made for longitudinal lines, as shown on music-sheets B and O, to be drawn below or above the time characters, said lines to be of the proper proportioned length to denote the time duration of said characters. The regular speed of the moving indicators past the measures and characters will convey to the sight the position and duration of each character. The same result is attained when the characters are revolved past stationary indicators. The ti me-beating is operated in either position of the device in unison with indicators and characters or can be operated without them. The operation of the device is as follows: Prepare a sheet of music that will exactly circle the cylinder-case A, make as many measures of equal lengths as there are pins 00 in disk 70, place characters in measures as before described,place said sheet around cylinder, adjust it so that beater i will strike when music-bar is opposite one of the indicators, wind the power-spring, and withfinger-ratchetaturn the projection kfrom pinion F and execute the music characters as they pass the indicators, holding one character until indicator reaches the next. I am aware that prior to my invention characters were made use of in a straight line on a continuous strip with measures of different lengths to denote the duration of each of said characters, said continuous strip being wound from one spool to another past an opening in a box, and in another case markers drawn over a number of books or sheets of ordinary music have been made use of for thepurpose of keeping bandsmen playing together. I do not claim any such device or music prepared in any such manner.
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by. Letters Patent, is-
1. In a music-indicator the combination of coil-spring A, shaft B, crankZ, pinion 0, its ratchet and dog, shaft E, its pinions D and F, pinion H, shaft G, disk K, its pins cofwith the time-beating contrivance consisting ofbeaterarms h t' J, lever-arms 1 2 3 4 5 6, springs t o n, posts f R g, posts 6 it Q, projections y y y, finger-ratchets a c d, as described and set forth.
2. In a music-indicator the combination of coil-spring A, shaft B, crank Z, pinion 0, its ratchet and dog, shaft E its pinions D and F, pinion H, shaft G, disk K, its pins w; and the time-beating contrivance, beater-arms h '5 J, lever-arms 1 2 3 4 5 6; springs 25 0 'n; posts f R 9, posts e a Q, projections y y y, fingerratchets a c d, with the governor contrivance IIO consisting of speed-gear pinion I, shaft 8, pinions M and N, shaft 7, pinions m and P, pinion C shaft S, Weights T T, hangers W W, levers V V, plate Y, rod X, finger-ratchet b, as described and set forth.
3. In a music-indicator the combination of coil-spring A, shaft B, crank Z, pinion 0, its ratchet and dog, shaft E, its pinions D and F, pinion H, shaft G, disk K, its pins or; and the time-beating contrivance, beater-arms h t'J, lever-arms 1 2 3 4 5 6; springs to n; posts fR g, posts e it Q, projections y y y, with the governor contrivance consisting of speed-gear pinion I, shaft 8, pinions M and N, shaft 7, pinions m and P, pinion G shaft S, Weights T T, hangers WV W, levers V V, plate Y, rod X, finger-ratchet b, with the movable indicator contrivance consisting of pulley-L belt F, indicators D constructed to operate in connection With the prepared music-sheets as described and set forth.
4. In a music-indicator the combination of spring A, cylinder-case A revolved by said spring to carry musicsheets, shaft 13, crank Z, pinion 0, its ratchet and dog, shaft E and its pinions D and F, having a planetary movement around pinion O, pinion H, shaft Q, to
' support the cylinder-case and its contents,
pulley L serving for a base of shaft G in connection With the different described music sheets and indicators; all as and for the purpose described and set forth;

In a music-indicator the combination of spring A, cylinder-case A revolved by said spring to carry music-sheets, shaft B, crank Z, pinion 0 its ratchet and dog, shaft E, and its pinions D and F, having a planetarymovement around pinion C, pinion H, shaft G to support cylinder-case and its contents, pul ley L serving for a base of shaft G, pinion I on shaft G, shaft 8, its pinions M and N, shaft 7 with its pinions m and P having a planetary movement around pinion I, pinion C shaft S, weights T T, hangers W W, levers V V, plate Y, finger-ratchet Z7; as and for the purpose described and set forth.
6. In a music-indicator the combination of spring A, cylinder-case A revolved by said spring to carry music-sheets, shaft 13, crank Z, pinion 0 its ratchet and dog, shaft E and its pinions D and F having a planetary move ment around pinion C, pinion H, shaft G to support the cylinder-case and its contents, disk K having pins :0, pulley L serving for a base of shaft G; pinion I, shaft 8 its pinions M and N, shaft 7 with its pinions m and P having a planetary movement around pinion I, pinion C shaft S, weights T T, hangers W W, levers V V, plate Y, finger-ratchet b with the time-beating contrivance consisting of posts f R g, springs 25 0 n, lever-arms 1 2 3 4 5 6, and beater-arms 7L 2' J, posts e it Q, projections y y y, finger-ratchets a 0 cl, said time beating contrivance being revolved around disk K and its pins w to actuate beaters as and for the purpose described and set forth.
7. In a music-indicator the combination of spring A, cylinder-case A revolved by said spring to carry music-sheets, shaft B, crank Z, pinion 0 its ratchet and dog, shaft E and its pinions D and F, having a planetary movement around pinion O, pinion H, shaft G to support cylinder-case and its contents, pulley L serving for a base of shaft G; pinion I, shaft 8 its pinions M and N, shaft 7 with its pinions m and? having a planetary movement around pinion I, pinion C shaft S, weights T T, hangers W W, levers V V, plate Y, finger-ratchet 1), posts f R g, springs '15 0 n, leverarms 1 2 3 4 5 6, beater-arms h 't' J, posts 6 Lb Q, projections g y y, disk K and its pins 0; to actuate heaters in connection With the difiercut-described music-sheets revolved upon, and by cylinder-case A, past stationary indicators, all as described and set forth.
8. In combination with music-sheets having bars or measures of equal length, and characters placed therein at their respective time distance apart as described, the cylinder to revolve the music-sheets, indicators, the speed-governor, the time-beating contrivance, and the operative train-gearing, substantially for the purpose as described and set forth. 4

In combination With music-sheets having a requisite number of lineal bars or measures of equal length having characters in their respective time-allotted space, longitudinal lines to denote their duration, operative indicators D, disk K and its requisite number of pins as, the described speed-governor, the time-beater contrivance, the operative gearing; substantially as and for the purpose set Witnesses:
