B. R. GAREAU. ILLUMINATED CLOCK DIAL FOR INDICATORS, &c. No. 60 5,312.

PATENT Fr es,
DETROIT, Midinehn.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo'. 605,312, dated June 7, 1898.
Application in May 26,1897.
To all whom it, may concern:
Be it known that I, ROCH R. GAREAU, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Detroit,- in the county of Wayne and State of Michi gan, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements'in Indicators, of which the fol, lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention refers, broadly, to means for indicating and specifically to the application of my invention to indicators of the charac-. ter used to indicate the presence, absence, or whereabouts of the occupant of the roomin a clock-dial with hour and minute hands is used to indicate the hour of return, together with other indicating devices for imparting further information as to the day of return, number of the occupants room, the floor of the room, the
To this end my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as more fully hereinafter described, and shown in the drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation of an indicatorembodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a .rear elevation of the operating parts inclosed within" the casing. Fig. 3-is a perspective view of the indicator, showing the curtain across the front face. Fig. 4Eis a cross-section on the axis of the hour and minute hands.
A is the outer casing of the boX inclosing and supporting the operating parts of my device.
B is the clock-dial.
C and D" are the hour and minute hands.-
E is an opening in the clock-dial, displayformer inscribed with the days of the week around its periphery and the latter being marked at its periphery with A.M., Pl/L, and the names of such places to which the occupant of the office usually resorts. Below the dial is a base-plate H, provided with openings I and J, behind which are mounted a series of numbered rollers, those in the openin g I by their combination indicating the numindicating the floor of the occupants room. The indicator-hands G and D are fastened upon hollow shafts K and L and are provided panel to hide the dial.
with a device for setting the same by hand serial no. 638. 186. (No model.)
which is operated by a turn-button B in the upper left-hand oorn'erin any suitablemanner.
1 The device shown in the drawings comprises the motor-wheels?) and c, the formergbeing onthe end of the shaft connectedto the turnbutton B and the latter on the hollow shaft cl, which imparts motion through a, small crown-wheel e to a gear-wheel f on a shaft of the minute-hand, which in turn permits the motion through suitable intermediate gearing to the shaft of thehourhand, all soarranged that in turning the button Bi both hands will be, moved in the proper ratio.
- The rollers FT and G- are sleeved upon a common shaft, and each is provided with means. for turning the same, which means are actuated by the push-buttons O and D in any suitable manner.
In the drawings the rollers F and G are shown provided with ratchet-wheels and actuating-pawls Z m, against which push-but tons O and D are adapted to operate in such manner that at each push of the button the actuating-pawl will return the roller the'necessary distance to move a new indication into the opening in the dial, and 'n n are pawls which retain the rollers in their adjusted position.
- The series of rollers in the openings I and J are adjusted by hand, and suitable retainin g-pawls 0, engaging the ratchet-wheels upon the rollers, maintain them in position.
The casing in front of the dial is provided with a hinged closing door F, on the inside of which is mounted in suitable vertical bearings the spring -roller curtain N, which is made of transparent material and upon which is marked Present, all so arranged that said curtain may be drawn across the glass The shaft of the minutehand is hollow, and through which projects a hollow post P, which forms the support for a miniature electric lamp A, the electric conductors'for which extend through the hollow .posti'f This lamp is controlled by a suitable snap-switch 4", which is preferably mounted in the remaining corner of the clockdial face.
In practice, the parts being constructed and arranged as shown, the indicator is intended to operate as follows: The name of theperson which the indicator is to represent "is indicated in the space S. If absent, his time of return is indicated by the adjustment of the hands, the day on which he returns on the roller F; if theforenoon or afternoon by the roller G. If engaged in any public building on business, he may adjust the roller G to denote where he is to be found. When the occupantis present in his office, he draws the curtain across the closed panel and thereby hides the indications, except those giving his name, number of room, and the floor of the building, which appear below the curtain. v
The electric lamp, being suitably supplied with current from a source of electricity, which may be furnished on account of the smallness of the lamp by an electric battery contained within the casing, will serve at night-time to illuminate the whole face of the dial and make all the indications on the face of the device easily readable. At the same time, when the curtain is across, the transparent nature of the curtain will make the inscription thereon readable from the outside, and thus my device is equally "serviceable at all times.
What I claim as my invention is-- 1. The combination with a dial and the hour and minute hands thereof, of hollow arbors carrying the hands, a hollow tube stationarily secured Within said arbors, an incandescent lamp supported by said tube and an electric conductor connecting said lamp with the sourceof electricity, and a switch for controlling the lamp.
2. In an indicator, the combination of the frame or casing, a clock-dial provided with indicator-hands and with openings in the dialindicator, rollers in said opening, and setting devices for said indicator-hands and rollers operated by buttons locatedon the face of the dial in proximity thereto, a miniature electric lamp mounted on the clock-face in the axial center of the indicator-hands and a transparent curtain supported in front of the clockdial.
3. In an indicator, the combination with a primary indicating means, and a light therefor, of a supplemental indicator movably held in relation to the primary indicator and arranged in front thereof and of the light and adapted to be moved toexpose the primary indicator, substantially as described.
4. In an indicator, the combination with a clock-dial, of indicating-hands, mechanism for imparting to said hands the proper relative movement provided with an operating device located in front of the clock-dial, an indicating-roll mounted in proximity to said dial and adapted to be seen through the latter, and means in front of the dial for setting said roller, substantially as described.
5. In an indicator, the combination with a clock-dial, and index-hands, of hollow arbors for the hands, means for rotating said arbors to impart the proper relative movements to the hands, an electric light located at the front or outer end of the arbors, and a support and conductors for the light passing through said arbors.
6. The combination with a clock-dial and the hour and minute hands thereof, of a hollow arbor carrying the minute-hand, electric conductors passing through said hollow arbor, and an incandescent lamp connected to and supported by said conductors in the center of the dial independent of the minute hand and its arbor, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROCH R. GAREAU.
