, To all who-mit may concern.'
-Be it known that I, JOSHUA H. Lamar, M. D., a -citizen of the -United States of America, and a resident of New York,
county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Salt and Pepper Contain'ers, of which the following is a specification.
:This lnvention has-referenceto a novel household utensilA and pertains particularly to a saltcellar and pepper box combined. Forthis. purpose the holder or receptacle l ment .to permit of the passage of the salt' Aproper 'is divided into two compartments completely Yseparated from each other. Scparate means are provided on each compartandfpepper simultaneously and means are also provided for the use of the salt or pepper alone; said means prevent at the same time the ingress of moisture and dust where Furthermore them'eans for excluding mois` low and the liability to derangement greatlyby the salt and pepper are kept in a perfectly .dry condition. ,This 'further renders the compound receptacle adapted for use with spices which usually are more sensitive to moistureV that is more or less hydroscopic.
ture 'anddust make this novel compound rel .ceptacle asanitary appliance which is ever ready for 'use By simplicity in construction thetcostof production has been'kept Y' reduced and care has been taken to produce a neat and desirable article, all as will be fully described hereinafter with reference to the .faccoml'ianyingr drawing 1n which:
Figure l represents -intop plan view -a compound salt and pepper container ernb0dying\in desirable form the present 1m- -two independent parts with openings there- .proveniente Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section 'on line 2-'2- of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 illustrates on an enlarged scale the top central portion` of-the device'.-
Similar characters of reference denote like parts in all the figures.
The combined salt and pepper. contalner artition, a hinged cover composed of .in and atop cover thereon also composed of two halves without openings.
-In thevdrawing a represents the container which is divided into two-separate compart comprising a container proper, a partitionments ai, a? dividdwliy'a partition b preferably located in the center of same, as shown l in Fig. E2. The container may be made of any suitable material either transparent or opaque, for instance of glass, wood, porcelain or hard artificial compositions.A For the purpose of giving the device a pleasing ap-y pearance the container is preferably made of artistic shape.
As shown in Fig. l the container is of elongated'shape so as to have sufiicient room' for both t-he salt and pepper. VOn top of the container there is provided a double cover consisting of two halves c, c1. The two halves' ofthe cover are mounted on one pin o1' pintle d forming thus a`hinge whose one leaf or strap c isprovided with smallopenings and forms the means for issuing the pepper while thesecondleaf or strap c1 has Vlarger openings and forms the means for is# suing the salt. Two small catches 02,05 are provided one on each leaf so as to'keep the leaves securely on the container. It is evi-v dent from the above that each leaf may be lifted or turned when it is reluired'to clean a compartmentorxlll same. On the pin or pintle cl there is further mounted a device for embracing the top portion ofthe partition. This device consists -ofa metal stri bent into' two flaps -f,..f1-wirich are 'pressed firmly onto the toplportion of the partition so as to completely separate the two com partments and alsosupport the two leaves of the-cover. The pintle' d is bent upward at a right' angle on one end for the purpose of having a supaort P on which the top cover is mounte This cover consists of two halves orleaves e, e1 ,which turn on the thus forms apivot. These halves or leaves normally cover the perforated-leaves below so that neither' dust nor moisture can enter the container. Only when the salt or pepper or lboth are to be used one or the other -half e, 'e5 or bot-h are turned away from the yperforated cover. whereupon the container maybe used. After use the top cover is againplacedon the perforated cover so as `toprevent atmospheric-- influences on the.
contents of the'container.`. --Each leaf e, e1 has a littleflmob e2, es to facilitate the .turn- -upright portion of the pintlewhich portion i ing of same." In' the described mannen a'4 .really sanitary applianceis produced.
