L'IFT-ER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented Aug. 13, 1912,
Application filed January 21, 1911. Serial No. 603,964.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. PECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bel ade, in the county-of Nance and State of ebraska, have invented a new and useful Lifter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same- This invention relates to a new and useful grappling device, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a s1mple, durable and efiicient devlce'of this character, in which novel features are involved.
A further object of the invention is to provide a grappling device comprising a pair of extensible members, which maybe so adjusted, as to permit the grappling members to receive various boxes or other commoditiesv of difierent dimensions.
Another feature of theinvention is to arrange the a plingmem'bers in such wise as to firmly fibld an article while being lifted or elevated.
It is perfectly apparent that as the commodityincreases in weight, the gripping action is correspondingly increased, because of the arrangement of the grappling member. Furthermore, it is clearly evident that the grappling members may be adjusted, as to fit within a box or an opening of any lifted or elevate The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the grappling device as applied to the outside of a box, whereby the same may be lifted or elevated. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the grappling device arranged in order to engage the inner side walls of a box, so that the same may be elevated. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the grappling device removed from the box, and illustrating the extensible members differently adjusted. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section view on line H of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the extensible members or bars, which are arranged in. parallel relation, so as to slidewith regard to one another. One end of each extensible member or bar is provided with overhanging lugs or hooks 3 and 4, which engage over the adjacent extensible member or bar, thus acting as guiding means, when the extensible members are; '60
adjusted. To hold the extensible members in adjusted positions, one of them is vided with a plurality of apertures 6, w ich are designed to be engaged by the lug 7 of a spring member 8 carried by the opposite" extensible member or bar. This lug 7 also extends through an aperture 9 of the mem.
her or.bar which carries the spring. member,
soas to reach and engage any one ofthe plurality of apertures of the other member. The lug 7 protrudes through the spring member far enough to receive a ring 10, as shown in the drawing, whereby the spring member maybe actuated so as towithdraw the lug from any one ofthe plurality of apertures, whereby the bars or members may, be adjusted.
The outer ends of each extensible member or bar are formed with apertures 11,
in which the transverse portions 12 of' the grapplin members are swivelly mounted. To hold the transverse portions in proper relations with regard to the extensible members or bars, cotter pins 13 are provided, which are extended through the transverse portions of the grappling members 14.
The grappling members comprise single metal rods, which are bent to form atone of their ends rectangular loops 15, while the other ends are terminated into curved downwardly extending grappling points 16, which are designed to engage a box or other commodity as shown in Fig. 1. On examining Fig. 1 of the drawings it will be seen that as a pulling action is exerted upon the rectangular loops, the grappling points will be thrown inwardly toward the box, in order to securely grip the same, whereby it may be lifted or elevated. It will be seen that as the box or other conunodity increases in weight, the gripping action will be wrrcspondingly increased. Upon referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will'be observed that the grappling members are arranged so that. the grappling points may engage the inner walls of the box. thus making it possible to elevate an open box as well as a closed one. To reverse the grappling points from that shown in Fig. l to grapple a box by engaging the inside thereof, the grappling members are rotated partially upon their swivels, and the entire grappling I there has been provided a novel form of grap ling device comprising extensible mem ers, including reversible grappling devices. In practical fields this device has been found to be exceedingly useful for elevatingor liftin piano boxes. and the like. Furthermore iti'as been found to be practicable in every res ect.
The invention having been set forth, whatis claimed as new and useful is:-
In a (grap ling device, a pair of bars constructe a tudinally with relation to one another, a pair of reversible grappling members constructed of single pieces of rod material, each member having an elongated horizontal portion extending transversely through one end of each bar with devices penetrating the portion one upon each side of the bar to hold said portion swivelly mounted therein, one
and adapted n arranged to be adjusted longi-' end of said horizontal portion having a downwardly extending portion terminating in a right-angled grappling point adapted to engage a box, while the other end of said horizontal portion is provided with a right angle extension disposed in a plane at right angles to the downwardly extending portion, said extension terminating in a loop, said loop and the extension are arranged and movable in a plane ofi'set from the bars so that the rappling point may be reversed to engage either the outside or inside of the box, the downwardly extending port-ion and the grappling point being offset from the bars so as to be reversed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM O. PECK.
