CANDLE HOLDER.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO KAMPFE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CANDLE-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O'r'ro KAMrrn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Candle-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to candle holders, and the object thereof is the provision of an article of this or like character, which is of simple construction and is positive in action,
In carrying out my invention, I preferably employ a plurality of swinging jaws adapted to engage and hold the candle or other article to be supported and secured in position, a member in which the said jaws are pivotally mounted so as to swing, a member co-acting with the aforesaid member and with the said swinging jaws so that by a relative movement between the said members the swinging jaws are moved to position to clamp and secure a candle or other article in place.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevation and partial section of a candle holder illustrating the features of my present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the candle removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan on line :0 m Fig. 1, and Fig. at is an elevation illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, my improved candle holder preferably comprises a base 10 which may be made as illustrated in Fig. 1, or otherwise, and to which base a standard 11 is secured. As illustrated, this standard 11 is preferably tubular and at its upper end is interiorly screw-threaded, as shown at 12. At its upper extremity the standard 11 is also provided with a flange 13, preferably extending outwardly therefrom and at right-angles thereto.
Together with the base and standard I employ a head member which preferably comprises a shank 14 which is cylindrical and exteriorly screw-threaded to enter the upper portion of the standard 11 and to en gage the screw-threaded interior thereof so that by turning the shank 141 there is a relative longitudinal movement between the shank and the standard 11. The upper or outer end of the shank .14.- is reduced in cross-section, as indicated at 15, and fitting over this reduced end 15 of the shank 1 1 I prefer to employ a pair of plates 16 and 17 which are preferably circular in outline and Specification of Letters Patent.

each provided centrally with an opening 18 to receive the reduced end 15 of the shank 14:. The plate 16 in its upper surface and adjacent to its periphery, is provided with a circular recess 19, and the plate 17 in its inner surface is similarly provided with a recess 20, so that when these plates 16 and 17 are placed together enjoining the parts, the recesses 19 and 20 are in juxtaposition. The edges of the plates 16 and 17 in equally spaced positions are both provided with notches 21. I also employ a plurality of swinging jaw members, each one of which is indicated by 22. Each swinging jaw memher is provided approximately centrally with trunnions 2-1, which when the swing ing jaw is passed within one of the notches 21 in the edges of the plates 16 and 17, lies within the space provided for by the recesses 19 and 20, it being understood that as many of these swinging jaw members may be desired may be employed, and in any case there are provided a corresponding number of the notches 21, each to receive one of the swinging jaw members, and while I have illustrated three of these swinging jaw members, I do not limit myself to the use of this number. 0n the outer or upper surface of the plate 17 I provide a disk 26, and passing through the same and into the reduced end of the shank 1 1 is a screw 27, by means of which the disk, the plates and the shank are secured together.
In order to assist in assembling the parts, particularly in bringing the notches 21 in one plate into alinement with the notches in the other plate, I may employ a pin 28, secured in the shank 14, projecting longitudinally therefrom and passing into and through the plates 16 and 17 in the recess therein, forming part of the opening 18, into which the reduced end of the shank 14 is received.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the upper end of each of the swinging jaw members may be rounded and so shaped as to terminate in a point adapted to engage the candle 29 to secure the same in position, and the lower end of each of the swinging jaw members, or that portion of each of these members below the pivotal point are engaged at the inner edge by the outer surface of the flange 13.
It will now be apparent that by turning the head member in the upper end of the standard, the distance between the engaging parts of the upper ends of the swinging jaws may be varied to receive same and hold in position a candle or similar article of any diameter within the limits to which the swinging jaws may open and close. It will also be understood that while I have illustrated my invention as applicable to a candle stick, that the same may be used for various purposes, as for example, in Christmas-tree ornaments, mops and other like articles.
In some instances it may not be desirable to have the candle engaging ends of the swingiog jaws pointed at their eXeremities, and in such instances it will be apparent, as illustrated in Fig. 4, that the swinging jaws may be reversed in position, so that, as shown in this figure, the rounded portions of the engaging ends of the aws will come into contact with the candle, or other device, to grip and hold the same in position.
I claim as my invention:
1. A candle holder comprising a base and tubular standard at its upper end interiorly threaded and having an outwardly eX- tending flange, a shank eXteriorly threaded and screwing into said standard, a pair of plates removably held to the shank and said plates notched at spaced intervals, a plurality of swinging jaw members, each havmg a cam surface on the inner edge below, but adjacent to the pivot and bearing upon the said outwardly extending flange, and means for pivotally connecting the same in said notches to said plates, whereby the jaw members are actuated by the aforesaid flange.
2. A candle holder comprising a base and tubular standard at its upper end interiorly threaded and having an outwardly extending flange, a shank eXteriorly threaded and screwing into the said standard, a pair of plates, a disk and a central screw for removably holding said plates to the shank, and said plates notched at spaced intervals, means for bringing said plates into coincidence, a plurality of swinging jaw members and means for pivotally connecting the same in said notches to said plates, whereby the jaw members are actuated by the afore said flange.
Signed by me this 26th day of Sept. 1911.
