DICK- l-IXSUN a citizen of the United States residing at Sioux Falls, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safet-ydtazors. of which the fol lowing is a specification. reference being bad to the accomtnurving drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in safety razors and more particularly to a blade therefor, and my object is to provide. a blade and a guard therefor which shall have close. contact with the cutting edge of said blade.
further object of the invention resides in providing a guard or protection for any aml all lt'inds of razor blades, including such blades as are commonly used in safety razors in general use. said guard being formed of tough. tlexible material, such as wire, tilameut. thread or tiber.

In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a handle member such as is used in the usual form of razor, to the one end of which is pivotally engaged an arm or the like 2, said arm being pivoted adjacent one end thereof to permit both ends to project; beyond the pivot. point as is true in the pivoting of the blade in the usual form of razor, and the portion of the arm 2 which extends a greater degree beyond the. pivot point. has a portion thereof increased in width. as shown at it, to form a seat or resting plate. Also pivoted to the handle t on the same pivot point upon which the arm 2 is secured. is an additional arm t which is spaced a slight distance from the arm 2 so that a blade may readily fit between the two arms, and the outer portion of said arm t is increased in width, as shown at 5, to correspond with the portion 3 of the other arm, while said portion 5 is also provided with a tongue or lip (5' which depends therefrom and is adapted to engage the one edge of the portion 3 of the opposing arm to limit the movement of the arm t in the one direction.
As stated, the two arms 3 and -t are spaced a slight distance from one another to permit of a blade being disposed between the same, and to provide for such a bladta the inner face of the. portion It of the arm 2 is provided at its ends with a pair of posts or studs ti and T which are adapted t enter the notches 8 formed in the ends of a blade 0. This blade is of such length as to fit snugly between the. two studs t3 and T when the latter are. properly positioned in the notches S, and said blade is of a greater width than the width of the portion 23 of the arm 2, but in order to (lisposc one. of the cutting edges of said blade some dis tance beyond the one edge of the portion said pins or studs (3 and T are disposed ltltl nearer the one side edge than the other on the portion 3. This blade may be of any preferred type used in safety razors, but is preferably of the double-cutting edge type, having the ends thereof provided with the notches which are disposed in the plane of the longitudinal center of the blade, so that when desired, the cutting edges may be reversed.
From the ctmstruction. shown. it will be appreciated that after the blade is properly positioned on the portion 3 of the arm '3. the arm 4 may be brought into position in alinement with said arm 2 so that the widened portion 5 thereof will cover a gr'ater portionof the blade and retain said blade in position by friction-ally engaging the same. and I have provided a guard for the cutting edge of the blade which projects beyond these widened portions of the arms. which guard forms the most essential part of my invention, as will be hereinafter described. To this end, I desire to provide 2 very fine but tough. flexible material 10. such as wire. filament, thread or fiber, the one end of which secured to one face of the blade by soldering. electric welding or riveting. as shown at 10, and wrapping said flexible connectit'in the full length of the blade so that the segments of wire. thread 01' the like, will be disposed et' uidistant from one another and in close contact with the cutting edges. if there be a double edge. of said blade. As stated, this flexible connection extends the full length of the blade. and the opposite end thereof is secured to one face of the blade, as shown at ll. in a similar manner to that referred to at 10. and as this flexible connection. no matter what may be its character. is of a very ininute diameter and is w apped or wound quite tightly about the blade. it will be appreciated that the same will form but very slight projections on the cutting edges of said blade.

l i l l l l l l l l l l l 'hile l have particularly described a h lder for my improved blade. it will be understood that 1 do not wish to limit myself to this construction described, and may use any form of holder desired which will re- \illll the blade in position to he used upon the blades. as the essential feature of this invention is the blade with the guard therefor.
It will be noted that in the scription, l have described a blade with a flexible guard therefor which is perinancntly carried thereon, but in this connection. it must be stated that I also do not wish to be limited to a guard which is permanently carried on the blade and may provide a guard formed of similar material to that described above which is brought -in close contact with the edge of the blade and removaljily mounted with respect thereto. To this extent, 1 provide the various modifications, as disclosed in Figs. T to T. inclusive. the construction of which will be hereinafter and more particularly described.
In Figs. andfi, covering the first of the modified forms, I provide a handle member 13 of the usual or any preferred type, such as is used in the usual form of razor and as shown in Fig. 1, to which is pivoted adjacent one end thereof, an arm 14;, said arm being increased somewhat in thickness toward its free end and provided on the inner face of this thickened portion with an oblong rel?) to receive therein a blade 16. This blade may be of the usual or any preferred form used in safety razors. The one shown in the drawings having a double edge, and this blade is provided on the ends thereof on the longitudinal center of the same, with notches (not shown) such as are provided in the blade t) in the other form, which notches are adapted to receive studs or the like (not shown) on the rear wall of the recess 15. The retention of the blade in the recess by this means is identi"al with that shown in the other form, the one. cutting edge of the blade being disposed a short distance below the lower edge of the arm H. and in order to retain this blade against the arm fl and in the recess 1.). an additional arm 17 is pro vided and pivoted at its one end to the arm 14. The segments otthis flexible guard 23 are received in the notches 19 in the rear edges of the arms ll and IT and guided on the side faces of said arms by means of the guide channels or grooves 20, so that said segments will be disposed equidistant from one another throughout. the length of the blade, and as said segments are drawn tightly in close contact with the cutting edge of the btade. the same will form but slight projections thereon. The ends of the flexible guard 23 are, as stated, engaged, respectively, with the binding posts 21 and 22 in such a inanner as to be readily removed when desired, so that the operator may, at will, remove the same and apply a new blade or reverse the cutting edges thereof with little or no trouble.
In Figs. (5 and 't', I have shown a still 'furthcr modified form of the invention which also contemplates the use of a flexible "uard ren'iovably carried on the device witi respect to the blade thereon, and in this form, I have shown an arm 2-1 which may, itself, be engaged with a handle (not shown), said width and thickness at its free end and provided with an ob ong recess 25 in this thickened portion. This rece s .25 forms a seat for a blade .26, said recess being provided adjacent its ends with the studs 27 which are adapted to enter notches (not shown) in the ends of said blade 26. as described in connection with the other forms. When this blade. 26 is properly mounted in the seat, the one edge thereof projects below the lower edge of the arm 24, and in order to retain said blade in said seat 25, a plate 28 is provided which is hin ed, as shown at 29, to the rear edge of tie in- This plate 98 is of a size equal to that of the increased portion of the arm 24. and when brought in position against said increased portion, the inner face of said plate 28 will contact with the one face of the blade 26 mounted in said recess.
The rear edges of the widened portion of the arm 24 and the rear edge of the plate 28 are provided with alining transverse notches 30, while. the outer side faces of each of said members are provided with the guide channels or grooves 31 which are slightly inclined and terminate at. their upper ends in the notches 30. The outer face of the arm 2% is provided adjacent the ends of the thickened portion thereof with a pair of binding posts which receive the ends of a flexible guard 3?, said guard being formed of wire, filament, thread or fiber, as in the other form, and wrapped around the plate 28 and the widened portion of the arm 24. This flexible guard '32 as in the form shown in Figs. f and has the segments thereof guided through the notches 2-3 and the channels or grooves 131 to dispose said segments equidistant. from one another throughout the length of the blade. and said guard is drawn in close contact with the cutting edge of the blade to provide very slight projections thereon. Thus, from the form shown in this modification, and also from the form in the other modification, it will be seen that a safety razor set en'ibodying these improvements, will consist merely in a holder, a number of blades and a spool of the flexible material used as a guard, it being understood that when a blade is desired to be changed, the guard may be readily removed by the operator in accomplishing the desired result.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided an improved safety 'azor wherein the blade is provided with a guard or projection forn'ted of a very tough flexible material which is brought in close contact with the cutting edge of said blade, and it will further be seen that the guard comprises segments of" a flexible material arranged equidistant from one another thrt'nighout. the length of the blade, Furthcrn'iore, it will be seen that l have provided a means for both pernmnently anti removably mounting' the. guard with respect. to the blade, both forms tunbodying the use of a flexible guard, the segments of which are brought into close contact with the edge of the blade and arranged equidistant from one another throughout the. length thcreot \l'hile I have described several forms of holders in connection with the blades to which the guards are applied, I desire to have it understood that any form of holder, whatsoever, may be used. the principal idea ofthe invention contemplating the use of a flexible guard, the segments of which are close contact with the cutting and arranged equidistant from one another throughout the length thereof. In this connection. it must be stated that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
It will still further be seen that my device. is extremely simple and durable in construction. inexpensive to mauufactuie, and one which is very eflicientand useful in operation.
What I claim is:-
t. In a safety razor. a blade and a guard applied thereto comprising a plurality of longitudinally spaced segments held in contact with the cutting edge and extended on opposite faces of said blade.
2. In a safety razor: a blade and a guard therefor consisting of a continuous flexible winding extending around said blade and across the cutting edge thereof, and means to secure the ends of said winding for retaining brought in edge of the blade the convolutious thereof in contact with the cutting edge of the blade.
3. In a safety razor, a blade. and a guard therefor comprising a flexible material wrapped around said blade across the cutting edge thereof, the conrolutions of said flexible material being spaced at regular intervals throughout the length of the blade, and means to secure the ends of said flexible material for retaining the conrolutions thereof in contact with the cutting edge of the blade.
4-. In a safety razor a blade and a flexible material wrapped therearound in engagement with the cutting edge of the same to form a guard therefor, and means to permanently mount the ends of said flexible material under tension on the face of said blade.
