To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE IV. CUn'riss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Blackwell, in the county of Forest and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Match. of which the following is a full. clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a match to substitute the ordinary wooden match, and usable in the same manner by striking against any friction surface. I provide a solid metallic body having at its forward end a pocket extending axially therein a short distance, producing a tubular formation at the striking end. In the pocket thus provided there is packed a suitable absorbent, such for instance as absorbent cotton, and this I saturate with kerosene or other suitable inflammable fluid. Over the end of the filled pocket and over the end of the tubular shell thereof, I afiix any suitable striking head or tip to cover the absorbent and shell in a way that the composition constituting the tip firmly adheres to the said absorbent and to the shell, more particularly to the former, by filling the interstices of the filling at the forward end of the pocket.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a match embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.

The body 10 of the match is formed preferably ofsolid metal so as to give rigidity, any cheap metal being employed for the purpose. In the forward end of the metallic body an axial bore 11 is produced, ex tending a short distance and constituting a pocket surrounded by a shell 12 in which is packed a filling 13 of suitable absorbent fibrous material, such as absorbent cotton. The said, absorbent material is saturated with kerosene or other suitable inflammable fluid. The absorbent filling extends to the end of the shell 12, and on the front end of the match I apply to the absorbent filling and the end of the shell, an ignition head 14 of any approved match composition that will light by friction. The composition composing the ignition head firmly adheres to the end of the absorbent filling entering the interstices therein to securely retain the ignition head in place, and the rigid shell beneath the outer portion of the head on all sides strengthens said head, resisting its tendency to be displaced when the match is struck.

A match formed in accordance with my inventionis stronger than a wooden match, and there is no possibility of its breaking off in striking, with the consequent danger of setting an accidental fire. The inflammable fluid in the absorbent filling enables the match to continue lighted for a considerable period.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

'1. A match, consisting of a metallic body solid throughout its major portion and having an axial bore in the forward integral portion thereof extending a short distance into the match, forming a pocket, said pocket being packed with an absorbent material saturated with an inflammable fluid, the said filling extending to the end of the metallic shell surrounding the pocket, and

an ignition head of match compositionv adapted to light by striking, said head cov ering the end ofthe absorbent material and the end of the shell and firmly adhering to the said absorbent material.

2. A match, consisting of a metallic body having a pocket at the forward end thereof filled with absorbent material saturated with an inflammable fluid, said match having an ignition head at the forward end extending over the ignition material and over the shell and adhering to said material.
