have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to horse shoes, and the principal object of the same is to provide a detachable calk which can be readily removed when it is desired to sharpen the same.

' Another object of the invention is to provide the call: with an improved type of base whereby the call: may be securely clamped in place.

This invention comprises a shoe 1 which may be formed of any suitable material and which is provided with a dovetail tapered seat 2 in the toe having an under-cut front wall Each heel is also provided with a dovetail tapered seat 1 having an undercut .front wall so that the heel calks will be held in place. The heels are each provided with alined openings 5 and 6 formed through the side walls of the seat 4, the opening 5 being threaded and the opening 6 being nnthreaded and provided with an enlarged outer portion. The toe portion of the shoe is provided with transversely extending openings 7 and 8 which are formed in alinement and communicate with the seat 2, the outer portion of the opening 7 being enlarged.

The toe calk comprises a dovetail tapered base 9 which has a sloping front face and which is provided with a transverse opening 10 which registers with the openings 7 and 8 when the calks are in place. An enlarged body portion 11 is formed integral with the base and extends beyond the front wall of the base to such an extent that when the calk is in place the front face of the callt will be flush with the face of the shoe. A bolt 12 passes through the openings 7 and 8 and through the opening 10 and prevents the calk from sliding longitudinally in the seat. The head of the bolt is seated in the enlarged end ofthe opening 7 so that the load of the bolt will be counter-sunk and the bolt is held in place by means of the nut 13. From an inspection of Fig. 4: it will be seen that the forward portion of the base extends into the under-cut portion of the seat so that the calk is better braced and prevented from dropping out if the bolt becomes broken.

The calks which are used in the heels each comprises a dovetail tapered base 14 which is provided with a transverse opening 15 which registers with the, openings 5 and 6 so that a securing bolt 16 can be passed through the openings formed through the walls of the seat 4 and through the opening 15 to hold the calk in place. A nut 17 is threaded upon the outer end of the bolt 16 so that the bolt willbe securely locked in place. The calk is provided with an enlarged outer portion which rests. upon the shoe andthe base-is provided with a sloping forward face so that the base can extend into the under-cut forward portion of the eat. It will thus be seen that the heel calks are both held in place by the same method.

What we claim as our invention is A horse shoe having its too portion cut to form a seat leading from the inner edge and having undercut side and front walls, a calk' conformin to the contour of the toe portion of said shoe and having front and rear faces flush with the outer and inner faces of the toe of said shoe, 0. dove tailed lug formed upon said calk and fitting into said seat, and securing means assing transversely through said lug and t e toe of said shoe to hold said calk in place.
