To all whom it may 0012061 or Be it known that I, GEORGE E. STUART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logan, in the county of Logan and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in pen holders and more particularly to a pen holder having means thereon for retaining a pen thereto, whichmeans is also adapted to aid in the ejection of the pen from the holder.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a clamping member within the ferrule applied to the pen holder for frictionally retaining the pen in position on the holder, and a further object resides in providing an improved means for the operation of this clamping member.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a clamping member, one jaw of which is adapted to remain stationary, while the other is movable in the ferrule of the pen holder, and a further object resides in providing means movable between said jaws for opening and closing the same.
A further objectresides in providing means to retain said j aws in any definite position.
A still further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which is very effective and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device applied to use. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section therethrough as seen on line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the device as seen on line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section as seen on line ll, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the operating means for the clamping member. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the movable jaw of the drawing forming a clamping member, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the stationary aw of the clamping member.
In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which.similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a staff or holder of the usual or any preferred type having mounted on one end thereof the ferrule or sleeve 2, said sleeve being formed preferably of metal and covered with cork or any other similar material 3, for obvious purposes. This ferrule 2 may be held to the staff 1 in any desired manner, such as by means of a pin or rivet 4, and mounted within said ferrule and designed to operate therein, is a clamping member 5, said clamping member being arranged therein for the purpose of retaining a pen thereto and also for aiding in the ejection of said pen from the holder, when desired. This clamping member comprises a pair of elongated members 6 and 7, said members being pivoted one to the other adjacent their inner ends and the member 6 being securely held to the ferrule 2 by means of a screw 8 which extends through said ferrule adjacent its outer end and engages the same, thereby forming a station ary member of the portion 6. These members 6 and 7, elongated, as stated above, have their outer faces arcuately designed throughout their length, coincident with the curvature of the ferrule 2, and the member 6 has formed on the inner end thereof, an enlarged circular portion 9 which is provided with a slot 10, the purpose of which will be hereinafter and more parfioularly described. These members 6 and 7 have their inner faces tapered inwardly toward their inner ends, and each is provided with a longitudinal channel 11 on its inner face, the longitudii'lal channel of the member 6 being extended completely through the enlarged head portion 9 thereof to form an additional channel 11 which communicates with the slot 10 therein. The inner end of the member 7 is provided with an extension or projection 12 which is curved inwardly, and said member 7 is pivoted at the junction of said portion 12 with the member proper to the member 6 within the slot 10 thereof, so that said inwardly curved extension or projection 12 extends to a point in the slot 11 as the same extends through the enlarged head portion 9 of said member 6. These two members 6 and 7, pivoted one to the other, form a substantial clamping member, the one jaw 6 being stationary, while the opposite jaw is movable, and 1 have provided operating means for the jaws of this clamping member which comprises a short arm or shaft 13 slidably mounted in the longitudinal channels 11 of said members 6 and 7 and having the lower end thereof disposed in the channel 11 in the enlargement of the member 6. Said shaft 13 has the outer end thereof bent to encircle and grip a cross bar 1 1 or what may be termed a pair of lugs disposed on diametrically opposite sides of the shaft, which cross bar or lugs have the side faces thereof beveled, as shown at 15, and said shaft is also provided with a finger or thumb piece 16 which, when the shaft is properly disposed between the members 6 and 7, projects therethrough. The ferrule 2 is provided with a longitudinal slot 17 which eX tends for a portion of its length from the inner end thereof, said slot being adapted to receive therethrough the shank of the thumb piece 16, whereby the device may be readily operated, and it will be appreciated that as said shaft 13 is moved forwardly toward the outer end of the device, the lugs 14 thereon will force the movable jaw 7 outwardly until the same frictionally engages the inner wall of the ferrule 2. The inner end of the shaft 13, as stated above, is positioned in the channel 11 of the enlarged portion 9 on said member 6, and it will be seen that as said shaft is moved in an opposite direction, that is, inwardly, said inner end of the shaft will contact with the curved projection 12 of the member 7 and cause the free or outer end of the same to be drawn inwardly to contact with the outer or free end of the member 6.
This device, as previously stated, is a de vice for retaining a pen within and ejecting the same from a holder, so that in operating this device, a pen 18 is inserted in the end of the ferrule 2 between the outer periphery of the movable member 7 and the inner wall of said ferrule until the inner end of said pen contacts with the shoulder 19 formed on the outer face of said member 7, which shoulder will prevent further inward move ment thereof. The thumb piece 16 may then be moved longitudinally toward the outer end of the ferrule 2 which will cause the movable jaw or member 7 to be forced outwardly and correspondingly force the pen into frictional engagement with the inner wall of the ferrule 2, and in order to provide means for the retention of the device in this position until manually withdrawn, I provide the inner face of the jaw 6 with teeth or corrugations 21 which are adapted to be engaged by the edges of the bar 14 above and below shaft13. Thus, from this construction, it will be appreciated that when the pen point 18 is once locked in frictional engagement between the movable aw 7 of the clamping member and the inner wall of the ferrule 2, the same will be securely held in this position until such time as the thumb piece 16 is manually moved from its efiective position, and when it is desired to remove the pen point, it will only be necessary to force the thumb piece rearwardly which will cause the jaw member 7 to be drawn toward the member 6, which will not alone allow the point 18 to be readily withdrawn, but also aid in its ejection from the holder.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided an improved pen holder provided with means for the retention of a pen point thereto, which means may be also readily operated through aiding the ejection of the pen point from the holder, and it will further be seen that this means comprises a clamping member disposed in the ferrule on the end of the holder. It will further be seen that I have provided a clamping member comprising a pair of pivoted jaws, one of which is stationary and the other movable, with means intermediate thereof for the operation of the same. Furthermore, it will be seen that this means comprises a member which is adapted to be moved longitudinallyof the jaws to force the movable one into frictional engagement with the inner wall of the ferrule in which the same is mounted, whereby when a pen point is inserted bet-ween said ferrule and the movable jaw, the same will be securely held therein. It will still further be seen that I have provided further means for the positive retention of the movable jaw in its effective position, whereby absolute manual operation will be necessary for the releasing of the same from this position. Further, it
will be seen that when. the operating mem ber is moved to its ineffective position to allow the movable jaw to be correspondingly moved to its ineifective position, the pen point which is adapted to be held in frictional engagement between said movable jaw and the inner wall of the ferrule, will be loosely disposed in said ferrule and may be readily withdrawn or may be dropped from the holder without the necessity of grasping the same. Furthermore, it will be seen that after one point has been ejected from the holder and it is desired to insert another therein, said holder may be disposed to point upwardly, a pen point dropped therein and the thumb piece forced outwardly to clamp the pen in the holder, which latter action may be accomplished without loosening ones hold on the device. Thus, this device eliminates the old and inconvenient method of pushing and pulling by main strength to, respectively, insert and eject a pen point from a holder. At the same time, it will be seen that this device, While much more easily operated, is more positive and effective in use. It will still further be seen that my device is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which is very effective and useful in operation.
While I have particularly described the features of the preferred form of my invention, it will be understood that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
lVhat I claim is 1. A pen holder, comprising a staff, a ferrule mounted on one end thereof, a clamping member mounted within said ferrule, comprising a stationary and a movable jaw pivoted one to the other, a wedge member slid- 'ably arranged between said jaws, means to manually operate said wedge member, and means for the retention of said wedge member in its effective positions.
2. A pen holder comprising a staff, a ferrule mounted on one end thereof provided with a longitudinal slot, a clamping member mounted in said ferrule, comprising a pair of elongated members pivoted one to the other at their inner ends, said members having their outer faces designed areuately and the inner face of each of said members being provided with a longitudinal channel, and means slidably mounted in the channels of said members for the manual operation of the same.
3. A pen holder comprising a staff, a ferrule mounted on one end thereof, a clamping member mounted within said ferrule, comprising a pair of elongated members pivoted one to the other, one of said members being stationary and the other movable, and each having its outer face designed arouately, said members being also provided with alining longitudinal channels on their inner faces, and means disposed between said members and slidably arranged in the channels thereof for manually operating said movable member.

A pen holder of the class described, comprising a staff, a ferrule mounted on one end thereof, a clamping member mounted within said ferrule, comprising a pair of elongated members pivoted one to the other at their inner ends, one of said members being stationarily arranged and both having their inner faces tapered outwardly from their outer to their inner ends, said members also having their outer faces designed arcuately and provided with longitudinal chan-r nels on their inner faces, and means disposed between said members and slidably arranged in the channels thereof for manually operating the movable n'ieinbcr.
5. A pen holder of the class described, comprising a staff, a ferrule mounted on one end thereof and provided with a longitudinal slot, a clamping member mounted within said ferrule, comprising a stationary and a movable jaw pivoted one to the other at their inner ends, said jaws being elongated and having the inner faces thereof provided with alining longitudinal channels, the inner faces of said jaws being also beveled outwardly from their outer to their inner ends, a shaft slidably disposed in the channels of said jaws, and means carried on said shaft extending through the slot in said ferrule for the manual reciprocation of said shaft between the jaws.

A pen holder of the class described, comprising a staff, a ferrule mounted on one end thereof having a longitudinal slot therein, a clamping member mounted within said ferrule, comprising a stationary and a movable jaw pivoted one to the other at their inner ends, said jaws being elongated and having their inner faces beveled outwardly from their enter to their inner ends and also provided with longitudinal channels, the movable jaw being provided with a curved projection at its inner end, and a slidable member disposed between said jaws and arranged in the channels thereof for the manual operation of said movable jaw.

A pen holder of the class described, comprising a staff, a ferrule mounted on one end thereof having a longitudinal slot therein, a clamping member mounted within said ferrule, comprising a stationary and a movable jaw pivoted one to the other at their inner ends, said jaws being elongated and having their inner faces beveled outwardly from their outer to their inner ends and also provided with longitudinal channels, the movable jaw being provided with a curved projection at its inner end, and a shaft having a cam thereon slidably disposed between said jaws and the channels thereof, said shaft having means thereon extending through the slot in said ferrule, whereby the same may be manually operated.
8. A pen holder of the class described, comprising a stall, a ferrule mounted on one end thereof having a longitudinal slot therein, a clamping member mounted within said ferrule, comprising a stationary and a movable jaw pivoted one to the other at their inner ends, said jaws being elongated and having their inner faces beveled outwardly from their outer to their inner ends and also provided with longitudinal channels, the movable jaw being provided with a curved )rojection at its inner end, a shaft disposed etween said jaws and slidably arranged in the channels thereof, a lug carried on said shaft, and means also carried 011 the shaft extending through the slot in said ferrule for the manual reciprocation of the same.
9. A pen holder comprising a staff, a ferrule mounted on one end thereof, a clamping member mounted Within said ferrule, comprising a movable and a stationary member pivoted one to the other at their inner ends, said members having their inner faces provided With alining longitudinal channels, a shaft having a cam thereon and slidably mounted in the channels of said members to operate said movable member, and means cooperating With said shaft and sta tionary member for retaining the movable member in its effective position.
