DEVICE FOR OPENING BGXES.
APPLICATION TILED PEB.1" 19111 Patented Aug. 13, 1912.

REGINALD M. ALLWORTH, OF HAMILTON, ONTARIO, CAN/l.
DALLEY 00., LIMITED, OF HAMILTON, ONTARIO, CAI Wis.
Application filed February 18, 1911. Serial No. c.
['0 all whom it may concern:
lie" it known that'l. REGINALD M. ALI. worn, a citiyen of tanada, residing at Hamilton, in the Province of ()ntario and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Opening Boxes of which the following is a spmitication.
This invention relates to a device for opening boxes which are more particularly designed for packing shoe polishing paste or other material. In boxes of this char acter it is necessary to maintain a tight joint between the body and the cover so as to exclude air from the interior of the box and prevent. the contents thereof from drying out or deteriorating-when the same is stored for a considerable length of time. It is the object of this invention to.proride a cover lifter for boxes of this character which does not interfere 'ith the tight joint between the body and cover, which permits of easily and conveniently lifting the cover from'the body when it is desired to use thecontents of the box, which can be produced at comparatively low cost and which permits of stacking the boxes in cases without requiring more room than that which is occupied by ordinary boxes.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a. box equipped with my improved cover lifter or opener in one of its forms and showing the cover in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section in line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the cover lifter in a posit-ion in which it has raised the cover partly from the body. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section, on an enlarged scale, in line 55, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 a front elevation of a box provided with a slightly modified form of my improved cover lifter. F ig, 7 is a fragmentary vertical section of a box showing another modification of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The box in its general construction is similar to that now in common use and comprises a body of sheet metal or other material having a bottom or lower head 1 and an upwardly projecting annular flange 2 ar' Specification of Letters Patent. i

My improved cover lifter or opener whit. is applied to this box is const ucted ast-f olslows: G is an upright lip which is preferably; formed integrally with the. tlangp of the cover at the lower edge thereof and bong", upwardly along the outer side ofs aid flm1 i,., 1) represents a lifting lever ,or key whereby: the cover is raised from the body and w i ch is pivotally mounted .on the upperer d" lift the lip so as to turn in a plane parallel with: the side of the cover and body. The piy gtigl; connection between the lifting lever a1'id,'l ip. may be variously constructed that shown in Figs. 1-5 being suitablefaud consisting'of aireyelet hollow rivet punched outward y on the upperpart of the lip so ,as to. ft) iii an opening 7 and a tubulariirii, c"ollar f neck 8. The lifting lever is ,provided cen; trally with an opening which receives t neck 8 on which the lever turns and iscoii;

bottom and pro oo t :ile the covcrm "a flange of the cover and the pivot eyelet pro- 5 jects outwardly therefrom. At opposite ends or arms of the lifting lever the same is provided with two lifting lugs 10, see Figs. 2 and 3, which project inwardly toward the adjacent part of the flange of the cover and are arranged ab'ove the bead on theflange of the body. Upon turning this lever in one direction or the other, one of the lifting lugs is caused to bear upon the head of the body and thereby partly lifting or prying apart the cover from the body, as I shown in Fig. t, after which the opening of the cover can be completed in the ordinary manner.
By providing the lifting lever with lugs on opposite sides of its pivot the opening of the cover can be effected by turning the lever in either direction. It is preferable to extend the lifting lugs inwardly far enough to cause them to bear against the flangeof thfi Gover, whereby the lifting lever is held insurin a firm grip of these lugs on the bead and enabling the cover to be lifted effectively and also preventing the lugs from slipping off the edge of the head. The turn ing of the lifting lever is preferably offected by means of a finger piece ll project ing outwardly or laterally from the upper edge of the lever, as shown in Figs. 1-5, but if desired this finger piece may be arranged at the lower edge of this lever. shown in- Fig. 6. The lever together with the lugs and finger piece are preferably stamped from a single piece of sheet metal but if de sired the same may be cast or otherwise con structed. If desired the lever may be ar--- ranged between the cover flange and a lip 13 and the lever may be pivoted on said lip by means of a pivot eyelet 12 formed on the lever and projecting outwardly into an opening in the lip 13, as shown in Fig. 7.
I claim as my invention:
1. A box comprising a body having a flange provided with an outwardly projectng annular bead, a cover having a flange fitting over the flange of the body and provided with an upwardly turned lip, and a lever ivoted horizontally between its ends on said lip and provided at its opposite ends with lugs which project inwardly beyond the inner side of the lever and toward the flange of the cover and which are adapted to. engage with the upper side of the bead on the flange of the body upon turning the lever.
2. A. box con'iprising a body having a flange provided with an outwardly projecting annular heath a cover having a flange fitting over the flange of the body and provided with an upwardly turned lip, and a lever pivoted horizontally between its ends on. said lip and provided at. its opposite ends with lugs which project inwardly beyond v the inner side of the lever and toward the flange of the cover and which are adapted to engage with the upper side of the bead on the flange of the body upon turning the lever, said lever being also provided,centrally on its upper edge with an outwardly projecting finger-piece.
3HA box comprising a body having a flange provided with an annular outwardly projecting head, a cover having a flange fitting around the flange of the body above the bead thereof and provided with a lip which is bent upwardly along the outer side REGINALD M. ALLVORTH.
