To all whom #may concern:

Be it known that I, ALVIN J. S'roLI., a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkman, in the county of Geauga and State ot Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stranglers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in devices for controlling spirited, vicious, or land-mouthed horses, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device ot' this class which is simple in construction, which .may be connected with the rings ol a snatlle or other bit, and which is provided with pads adapted to press upon and close the nasal passages when the animal shows a tendency to become unnanageable.

l/Vith the above, and other objets in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in 'the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accoml'ianying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the device. Fig. 2 is a similar view ot' the improvement detached. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the device in applied position upon a bridle bit, and illustratingr by the dotted lines the position of the pads when pressure is exerted on the bit. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the attachment Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken through the upper portions of one of the pads. In the accompanying drawings the numeral l designates an ordinary bridle which is shown, in Fig. 1 applied to the head of an animal.

The numeral 2 designates the bit, and 3 the rings loosely connected upon the ends of the bit and adapted for the'reception of the harness reins. lhe bit illustrated in Fig. 3 et the drawings is of that class known as the snallle bit which comprises a pair of sections centrally connected together, but it is to be understood that the device may be successfully applied to the ordinary or straight bitsvifdesired.

opposite ends formed with loops or eyes G which are adapted for the reception of suitable bails 7, the said hails being adapted :for connection with the rings 3 of the bit through the medium ot' leather straps 8 as shown, or through the medium of straps or bands or the like as desired.

The numerals 9 and 10 indicate the pads which are slidably mounted upon the strap 5. These pads may be constructed of wood or any other desired material. and may be each provided with a'covering of some soft substance, such as chamois, cloth or the like, and each of the members 9 and 10 have their front portions provided with a longitudinal slit 11 ot' a size sullicient to snugly engage the strap 5. The front faces of each of the members J and 10 are formed with suitable threaded openings 11, the same being adapted .for the reception of headed screws 12 whereby the pads may be retained in proper ustment upon the strap 5 to position the same over the nasal passages of the animal. The pads 9 and l() are substantially V- shaped in cross section but have their apexes rounded so as to present no sharpened surface which may tend to injure the animal. The pads may be provided with continuous depressions 13 which are arranged below the strap 5 and which are adapted to receive strips of suitable material, as designated by the numeral 14. These Strips have their ends 15 connected in any desired manner. If desired, however, and as illustrated in Fig. (i of the drawings, the front or bit'urcated portion's of the said pads may be provided with suitable openings, the same adapted for the reception of threaded headed elements 16. These openings are arranged adjacent the bottom ot' the pads and below the bottom edges of the bands.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided an ex! tremely simple and effective device for the purpose intended, and while I have illustated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it now appears to me, minor details of construction, within the scope ot' the following claims may be resorted to if desired.

Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new isz l.
